Anyone commute to London?

In addition to a previous post of mine on here (which members were very helpful), has anyone had experience of commuting to London from Surrey, or similar commutes of 40 mile round trips (20 miles each way). Ive made the journey by car, and its a bloody nuisance. I’m trying to imagine if the journey would be any more enjoyable/quicker/relaxing using a 125cc scooter.

Anyone got any experiences they could share please?

I do 27 miles each way in from Essex to Victoria. Now on a 250cc scooter, but previously on 125 and 150cc scoots. It’s no problem, and takes about an hour no matter what size bike.

As a newbie, one of the big plus points for me for commuting this way was that I could stop whenever I felt the need to (for example I always told the missus that I had only stopped at McD’s for a coffee to warm up in the winter, when I was really pigging out on bacon roll and hash brown too  )

And the convenience of not relying on public transport is such a relief. I pity the non-riders commuting in from Essex these past weeks.

Thanks for the reply Big Pug.
I am thoroughly fed up with paying increased train fares, so Im due to take my CBT next Monday. Hopefully I will pass, then Im scouring ebay for a 125.

It is certainly doable on a 125, although you might find it easier and more comfortable on a maxi-scooter. Passing and getting 250 or 400 will make it easier still, and most 250s are as economical, if not more so on longer commutes than a 125 as you are not revving the balls off it all the way.

or get yourself a MOTORBIKE! you’ll thank me forever more for this advice

A motorbike eh?

Perhaps… one day. I will try my hand at a scooter first and then if I get bitten by the bug, i would certainly consider progressing.

That’s how i got into riding. A 125 scooter to commute into London from Herts (45 mile round trip). I had no intention at the time to get a full licence, but i soon as i was out there riding, I lasted 2 months before then done my DAS.

Although the 125 was perfectly fine to commute on, i find the bike much more comfortable and ALLOT more fun!

Motorbike? Hmm, well if we set aside that maxi-scooters ARE motorbikes, then motorbikes have some disadvantages over maxis when commuting:Similar engine sized bikes usually have bugger-all bodywork to keep the wind off you

  • they also have no storage to keep stuff dry, except what you put on your back

  • they don’t have a curry-hook on which to safely carry your dinner home!

  • they also usually do not have ABS, even as an option

  • you have all that distracting clutch, gears, and brake pedal & lever stuff.

Get a 125 version of my chosen scooter - Satelis - and not only can you stuff 2 crash helmets or a full tennis/badminton kit (including racquets!) under the seat, but you also can get a remote control to open that boot, a 12v socket to charge your phone/satnav/kettle inside a lockable glovebox, a pull-out rain-cover to keep the saddle dry when parked, a proper screen to keep the wind off, a bloody great ABUS chain that locks from inside the scooter, and finally the major controls are just: right-hand = go; left-hand = stop.

Yes, if you get bitten by the motorbike bug then go ahead and get a crotch rocket later on. But for commuting, a maxi-scooter cannot be beaten.

guys guys! lets get him on a motorised two wheeled vehicle first and then we can bore him with the scoot Vs bike talk

I agree it depends on your requirements.

Mine were -

  1. get off public transport
  2. cut journey time down
    2.5. 33 miles a day
  3. I dont often carry stuff in/out of work. When I do a rucksack is fine.
  4. I’m on 2-3lane dual carriageways almost all the way.
  5. I’m not fussed about the wind/rain.
  6. I have secure parking and locker and showers etc.

Add the non work wants to all that.

= R6 suits me down to the ground

I wish I could do all that on my SV!

I commute about 50 miles each way into London from near Cambridge on an MP3 400 - filtering no problem, 65mpg @ 70mph, takes between 1 hour 20 minutes and 1 hour 10 minutes.

Better than the train.

Thats it, selling the 'Blade !!!

Whilst I realise that your post has to be tongue-in-cheek, I would seriously say that whilst a 'Blade is for fun (a friend has an 06), for commuting use he is the one who is jealous. So keep the 'Blade for now, just get a maxi-scooter for real biking…

PAHHHAHAH!

Whilst my post was tongue in cheek I would agree totally with your comments, the 'Blade is far far from an ideal commuter bike but the Sundays and sunny days make it worthwhile!

Digger give the person a chance lol:w00t:…get a scooter and enjoy learning on it, the commute will teach you a lot then prepare you for something bigger to play on at the weekends because you will end up being bitten by the bike bug:D

Lol, I was agreeing with 'em !!! If i had enough cash I’d have the 'Blade and summat more suitable to commute on!!

Wait till you see what I’m getting for the winter!!!

Definately!
