Anybody want to earn a quick £100?

I appreciate it’s short notice but I’ve arranged to go and see a bike and hopefully pay for it tomorrow up in Castelford. I have no trailer or tow bar fitted to my car so my first thought was to get a motorcycle courier company to collect and deliver the bike for me. But then this would mean handing over the cash without taking the bike and also trusting the seller not to do a runner.

Is there anybody with a van or trailer that are free tomorrow and fancy a trip up to Castelford to pick up my new machine? I will pay £100 for your services

Cheers.

Alright mate

Your best shout would be to hire a van for the day and go grab it yourself…

Wouldn’t I then need some kind of ramp to load it and something to secure the bike? Never done anything like this before.

A scaffold plank will get you in, just push the bike up and in…

A couple of well placed ratchet straps will secure the bike in the back…

Ok I’ve sorted a van that has points to secure straps. How many straps would you recommend? Would you also recommend maybe putting a zip tie on the front brake to hold it down or maybe just leaving it in gear?

Don’t leave it in gear, put it in neutral…

Front brake is a good idea. Four straps should do, strap the bike upright. I’d go for one strap through either pillion footpeg or rear subframe, whatever solid point you can find at the back.

Then do the same with the front, straps round the chassis or headstock, or round the forks between the yokes…

Just make sure it’s all totally solid. The bike should be pulled down slightly on it’s suspension. It’s also best if you can secure the ratchet straps at flood level of the van, again helping to pull the bike downwards.

Good luck!

Jam the front wheel in the corner, then you’ll need two rachet straps normally (you can add a third if needed)

  • Across the rear footpegs, pulling down and forward (this will try and stand the bike up so then you need…)
  • From the left handlebar, pulling sideways.

Brake is an extra safety measure but if you do it this way it’s not needed.

Try not to crank the straps down excessively as you’re pressurising the fork seals.

p.s. I’v got an extra strap on the crash bung there pulling backwards for no real reason…

Interesting Alex…

You don’t prefer to leave the bike off the sidestand, to allow it to bounce up and down on its suspension during transit?

Short answer - no, the van’s got plenty of suspension

Sounds like yours wont be bouncing much either if you’ve got 4 ratchet straps holding it down.

The only way I’ve seen that was truly uncompressed is Rixxy’s setup with a wheel chock on the front wheel and a paddock stand on the rear, with an optional strap over the swingarm to stop it bouncing off the stand.

Or…

Front looks compressed there?

Yes some compression on the front, no more so than under braking though… Seals need changing anyway

what you lot on about just throw it in the back of a escort no straps needed ether we have had 6 bikes in like this XD but one of the bikes twise because someone decided to brake down in ongar

double post my bad

Hahaha yes Ross!

Laying a bike on it’s side can get messy though, oil, coolant, petrol, brake fluid etc can get where it shouldn’t…

ou can never have too many straps!!!

The bloke I bought the bike off knew what he was doing luckily…

Nice bike

Apart from the clashing rim tape:sick:

Well yeah… But I think he should keep it on as I’ve seen people peal it off and it takes off the paint as well. :frowning:
