This seems to be a day for starting problems.
2 days ago my bike (2002 triumph TT600) wouldn’t start - just one click from the starter relay then silence. All electrics working and got green light for Neutral.
Battery was low - for no obvious reason as had been for long ride evening before - so scratched head & charged battery up.
Went out today and same symptoms.
I can’t see anything obvious, and it’s been dry so can’t be damp getting in to anything.
It requires clutch to be in and I have been moving wiring looms about in front fairing (not disconnected anything), so it may be a clutch lever switch problem. It could also be linked to my suspicion that the previous owner fitting heated grips using the supply from the horn and left the horn without power…
Alternatively could be alarm (Datatool 3) playing up & draining battery.
Had a look in my manual & on net, but not much help.
The battery could be deceased or on it’s way out. Mine did that a few times before I got a new battery. All the lights would light up but the starter motor wouldn’t turn the engine. A new battery fixed it.
as said try the battery and check the altornators doing its job brushes did do it on baz;s but his h-d is crap:D mined you my gsx400et it was the brushes to
I had a very similar problem on my '05 Speed Triple recently - pressing the starter button would result in nothing more than a click from the relay. The motor would eventually turn after a good few attempts.
Turned out it was the relay itself. Triumph, in its infinite wisdom, decided to put the relay beside the rear shock and as a result it got covered in crap from the rear wheel. When we took the relay out it was badly corroded. New one in - starts every time now.
It was new 3 weeks ago, and I got a Varta not a cheap one, charged it up properly.
Hopefully the starter relay has a diagram on the outside so I can check it later.
Otherwise I’ll need to check all the wiring bit by bit - as far as I know, I can’t disconnect the alarm easily, so I’m putting checking that firmly to last (it’ll need money to get someone to look at it or for me to change the unit).
It’s not been my lucky week. Some b*stards pushed one of my other bikes over and that won’t start either - turns over but won’t light up. Luckily, I was near a mate’s so had somewhere to put it safely. I’m putting that down to no fuel in the tank (either leaked out or stolen). Unfortunately, I’d drained the battery trying to start it originally and there wasn’t enough ooomph (technical term) to turn it over quickly. Battery on charge now…
Unfortunately, my batteries are different sizes, so I can’t just swap them over…
I eventually got round to looking at it (note to self: next time don’t have kids, they only get in the way of bike time).
I’d managed to find a copy of a wiring diagram, so armed with this I took off the fairings to get better access…
…Hah! Whoever fitted the heated grips used Scotch connectors and hadn’t taped the wires up to stop them from moving around, with the inevitable result that one of the wires snapped when I [gently] moved the cables around. This meant that the clutch safety switch wasn’t getting a voltage in and the engine wouldn’t start (the single click was from the light relay) as it was convinced the clutch was out.
So, where are the horn leads? Mmm, what I see is a little different to the diagram - let’s have a search. What are these crammed under the tank? A lead of the right colours, let’s connect up horn, Yippee!
I suspect the previous owner had fitted the grips then somehow got the horn lead out of sight and was too lazy/too p1ssed off to sort out the horn.
