Hi, am hoping to repaint the alternator cover on the BBird - what do you rekon would be the best paint to use? would like a gloss black finish… and don’t say black gloss paint!
go to halfords and get engine paint.
poweder coating would look and last best
Powder coating is best but that means no cover for a couple of weeks.
Hammerite smooth gloss (not the crackle finish stuff) is good and hard wearing.
Assuming it’s an aluminium casting, it needs an acidic etching primer under. (Or bead blasting.) Zinc chromate is probably the best you’ll easily find retail.
Just follow the directions on the can, use a newish clean brush and leave to harden in the airing cupboard for as long as ths missus will put up with it.
As it’s a small item, go visit your local model shop, they stock decent Humbrol stuff in small cans.
Its only a Honda so any old sh!t will do;)
I used plastikote barbequeue paint on my ZX6R; applying a few coats after each ride for 4 - 5 times and it’s held out for a year. My mate used PJ1 High temp stuff for his engine covers and they turned out great. But then again, you ideally need to acid etch prime it to get a good key.
I painted the engine casings on mine with Halfords high temp engine paint because I didint want to wait for powder coating. I did it over a year ago and was expecting them to need re doing but they are still good. Make sure you remove any old paint, give the surface a good key and give it a few good heat cycles before riding in the wet.
permanent marker then?
Ha Ha!!

This is correct. With the quality of Honda’s aluminium, it’ll be fine with no paint at all. However, this shouldn’t be tried on a Suzuki or Kawasaki, as the bike will disintegrate into a pile of white powder should the paint barrier be broken!! lol

You’ve not read the thread about the Blade sumps that turn to dust then?
No, I hadn’t read that. I take it that’s occured with later blades then … my 17 year old blade sump is still peachy fine. In fact, it must be the most reliable and tough bike I’ve ever owned. It costs me so little to run that it’s silly … oh, and fast too!
