Alarm fitting

I just brought one of the alarms from www.motorbikealarm.co.uk for my bike and have read through the instructions and it all seems fairly simple, just one quick question, I’m hoping somebody will be able to help me with. One stage of installing is detecting which side of the ignition fuse is live and the other isnt, I assume from this I just need to connect my voltmeter to the negative battery terminal and then connect the positive onto each side of the fuse holder and see which one gives a voltage and then that would be the live side, correct?

Also I’ve got a cheapy voltmeter from maplins, like £5 jobby http://www.maplin.co.uk/domestic-multimeter-37279 will this be ok, or do I need an automotive one?

Thanks

Oh and if you remember about my problems with the locks, I’ve replaced the top yoke and lock today and now have a working steering lock, wasn’t anywhere near as hard as I thought it would be  so thanks for the help on that

The method works, assuming you remove the fuse, you may find it easier to test either side of the fuse holder to earth.

Thanks Art
