phoaar!

those propellars look wicked

why didn’t they use jet engines?

I’m only guessing but maybe it has something to do with being able to fly slow enough for paratroopers to jump out and stuff?

most work horses of the military use props

i think (but may be completely wrong :)) that turbo props are meant to be more powerful at lower speeds than jets

as these are transport planes, top speed isnt the priority
they need to be able to take off in as short a distance as possible (and of course land in that space) so props might be better at this (harriers cunning stunts aside)

i recall seeing some Italians demonstrate this ability in a C-130 at an air display, very impressive, except they crashed on the second run :w00t: (wasnt their fault; nose wheel gave way on the steep-whatcha-ma-call-it landing)

shhhweeeeeeeet!!!:D.

smiled:).

Very nice plane that…very interested in the prop shape.

heres a tactical/sarajevo/WhateverYouCallIt landing:

and look how fast this raf herc stops :w00t:

quality!

yeah they’ve obviously put a lot of research into those
that plus the carbon fiber in the wings (making it a hell of a lot lighter) should make for some seriously cool landings

Ashamed as I am, I’m an aircraft nerd… Thats a decent looking airbus, but im not sure it’ll ever rival the herc… I remember living in the middle east, my next door neighbour was an USAF herc pilot who trained the Saudi Air Force on them and I once got a ride in the jump seat of one, was a great experiance…that and sitting in the jump seat of a 777 coming into jeddah at night!

I’m sad i know…

so how do they stop so quickly? reverse thrust?

wow at the sarajevo landing - thats some serious trust in your machine!

think its that plus some very clever electronics during landing
very impressive when you see it at a show

heard something about the ability to reverse thrust being disabled in flight, so that might imply they start reverse thrust just before touchdown, need a pilots input on that

reverse in flight? i don’t think their rear view mirrors would cope

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is a jump Seat?

A jump seat is bascially a spare seat in the cockpit…

I’m not sure I’d be keen to be in one when they are doing a sarejvo landing though!!!

So it’s nowt to do with The mile High Club then?

here’s one of the fella’s i work on:D.
