i think (but may be completely wrong :)) that turbo props are meant to be more powerful at lower speeds than jets
as these are transport planes, top speed isnt the priority
they need to be able to take off in as short a distance as possible (and of course land in that space) so props might be better at this (harriers cunning stunts aside)
i recall seeing some Italians demonstrate this ability in a C-130 at an air display, very impressive, except they crashed on the second run :w00t: (wasnt their fault; nose wheel gave way on the steep-whatcha-ma-call-it landing)
yeah they’ve obviously put a lot of research into those
that plus the carbon fiber in the wings (making it a hell of a lot lighter) should make for some seriously cool landings
Ashamed as I am, I’m an aircraft nerd… Thats a decent looking airbus, but im not sure it’ll ever rival the herc… I remember living in the middle east, my next door neighbour was an USAF herc pilot who trained the Saudi Air Force on them and I once got a ride in the jump seat of one, was a great experiance…that and sitting in the jump seat of a 777 coming into jeddah at night!
think its that plus some very clever electronics during landing
very impressive when you see it at a show
heard something about the ability to reverse thrust being disabled in flight, so that might imply they start reverse thrust just before touchdown, need a pilots input on that
