Advice on value.

I’m looking to sell my bike soon. It’s technically a Cat C. Without boring everyone too much, it got knocked over in a work’s car park, and the garage it was assessed in wrote it off in terms of cosmetic economical repair. Baring in mind my colleague hit it at about 2mph (it has bar ends and crash bungs) then you can imagine my shock when the garage produced a list of ‘repairs’ that can only be described as a p1ss take.

Anyway, I got the bike back and had it re-MOT’d that same day. Passed. In fact, when I showed the mechanic the list from the assessor’s garage he actually laughed and suggested that they should be reported. I won’t name the assessor.

The only ‘repair’ we did was re-align the chain and the only damage it suffered was a scratch to the cowl. Anyway, I digress; I was hoping to put it in as a trade-in but the garages are reluctant to offer sensible money as it’s a Cat C.

Therefore, I shall sell it privately. However, I’ve never bought/sold a Cat C before and I’m looking for any advice re;value. For what the garage is offering, I won’t sell it for that; the bike runs sweet, doesn’t miss a beat, and out of principle, I won’t let it go for daft money.

If anyone can give me a ball-park figure, that would be appreciated. I have a rough idea but would prefer to see other’s opinions first.

Honda CBR600F, X-plate, in black.
Average condition, minor scuffs here and there.
24k miles, used as a yearly commuter.
Standard aside from arrow indicators and an older sport’s exhaust (have original)
New battery, serviced once a year by a LB mechanic, recent reg/rect change, Road Pilot 2’s on 1500 miles ago.
Have most of the old receipts for work done, past services etc.

I hope this is in the right section as I’m only looking for an opinion on value. I’ll advertise it on here in the relevant forum section when I get round to photos etc.

I’ll start the guessing (by picking a number randomly you understand) and say 1200 quid…

It’s worth what the market will bear, which for a Cat C will not be too much …

Assuming all this is fairly recent then why not value it at the cost you bought it back from the insurance company for plus the cost of the MOT less anything that may have devalued it since?

Simples

Not to complicate things, but it never went through insurance. It was sorted through my employer and an insurer never got involved.

Convert it to a track bike

If it’s not been recorded as a cat C write-off, then sell you don’t need to sell it as one.

if its not an urgent sell and you have nothing to hide then price it for what *you * think its worth. Any sensible buyer will lsiten to what you have to say, and consider that into the price. I always think each bike should be valued by its individual worth (but guide prices are helpful starter point) and I would happily buy a cat c that has history, comprehensive portfolio of docs and receipts/service history than an HPI cleared no history bike where the owner knows s0d all about it!

I have bought cat c cars before and had no issue, it provides a reason for a decent strip down and once over in many cases, and chuck some spin into the equation : new panels etc and all in all you have a decent bike with asking price to reflect.

But then again, there is always an element of stigma with a cat C, and people instinctively seek a lower price to reflect that. Pitch it well, that’s my point.

yes, I thought it was a bit odd that it’s a cat C but no claim on the insurance company. Has an HPI check been done to see if it has actually been written off?

@rimmy, I believe that the insurers will discount a bike if it’s been written off, hence it’s value may be more to a purchaser than to the insurers, but only of the purchaser takes the risk - i.e. the difference in what the insurers value the bike at and the purchase price.

You have complicated things …

How does it become a Cat C write off?

I’m either loosing the plot, or the will to live.

Cny49b Do you want to give us the whole thing again between “the bike went down” (don’t care how) to you sorting it out?

Did the insurance company/companies get involved? Did the DVLA get involved? Are there public records of any of the above?

As of the moment, it seems to be a choice of whatever you can get for a Cat C write off or the going market value of an unspoiled bike.

My employer is the Met. They don’t have an insurance company; any payment I was due for the bike is made through their funds.

When the garage said it was a Cat C based on their valuation of (phantom) works that needed to be done cosmetically, I decided to inform the DVLA as I thought it only right that if the garage said that, I should declare it. I must stress, I’ve had no other official independent check of the bike by any other garage. As I said, I showed the MOT mechanic the list of works proposed and his reaction probably said it all - not to mention the fact he said I should report the assessor.

I believe the DVLA may’ve recorded it, but I didn’t need a fresh log-book re-issued (so they told me).

Wanting to be honest, I will tell any prospective buyer what the assessment garage said. However, and I can’t really stress it enough - I think they were on the con. I think they thought I’d take their advice, get a payout for it and they’d keep the bike for ‘scrap’. No chance.

I was considering a track bike, but ideally, I’d like to use the sale to aid a new bike purchase.

I hope that clears things up a bit.

I’ll double-check with the DVLA but I’ll tell any buyer it’s ‘history’.

yeah, get back to use once you’ve confirmed it one way or the other would be a good move.

I can’t see them changing it’s status based on your original phone call though

Called the DVLA - it’s not down as a Cat C on their books as they get informed of that by insurers. As it never went through an actual insurer then there’s no change in bike status.

I’m amazed you got / will get the Met to payout at all
They only seem to want to compensate dodgy criminal types for spurious claims…

So it’s not a Cat C bike so it’s worth “market value”. Whatever that is.

<<< Sighs heavily

… aaaand, relax.
