wot color was the smoke?
What colour is it? If its white - its water vapour. If its blue/grey its oil burning which aint great news…
white i think. reminded me of steam engine smoke…yeah, that thick.
could it be something to do with the engine oil. like if they topped up my oil with sh~t
i only ask coz i hav been riding a few years now and never had this prob before
i would think its just vapor then my bike was doing it 2 day all over the garden lol and my zzr used 2 trow it out for like 10 mins till it was hot.
but i never covered the bike up and was stuck out in the storm and a lot off rain got in 2 my end can!
Kempo,
Its normal for engines to ‘steam’ when thay are cold in cold weather, this is just water vapour in the exhaust gasses condensing as they hit colder air. If the ‘steaming’ disappears after a few minutes everything is probably OK. If this is the case, the condensing gasses should not have a strong smell, they should smell of exhaust fumes and water vapour (a bit like a boiling kettle).
If it carries on when the bike has warmed up and is more like smoke than water vapour, you could be burning oil which is not good. If this is the case, there will be a very distinctive smell of burning oil.
The third alternative which is pretty unlikely is a blown head gasket. Check your radiator/header tank. If the coolant is a clear watery liquid, usually green or blue, its ok, if its greasy and looks like mayonaisse, it isnt.

hiya…
fret not yourself because I too have a cbr6 (rosie my baby) and she does the self same thing, clouds of white smoke on starting from cold has always done it from new. Honda say its the choke (electronic) if you smoke have a fag it’ll be gone by the time you get to the butt, if you dont smoke run your engine while your putting your lid and gloves on.
I know how embarrassing it can be especially outside a packed ace cafe on a warm day.
chhers guys.
i was worrying for nothing then.
Thats a definate yes you were, if the colour of the smoke changes then so should the status of your worry, but a regular service should keep all well with your honey and your wallet.
Hi there Kempo I know some times is a bit frustrating when you are not sure on what is going on, as you are a londonbiker, I can offer you a free bike check and a Dyno Run to make sure your bike is in tip top condition, plus I can carry a inspection on your water colled system and Exhaust system to look for any potential oil residuals just contact us by phone or e-mail to book your place, pop in and we will give you a lot of expertise advice and won’t cost you nothing!!! :D;)
I get the same thing with my Bandit 1250. Was concerned at first but now I ignore it as it’s burning no oil. Just water vapour/steam.
It is just getting worse because more water is settling in your can overnight, and the engine is colder so the injection increases the revs more when you start, hence bigger plumes of smoke.
When the weather warms up a bit, if it is still making massive amounts of smoke, then start worrying…
