Hi - after taking a bikesafe course on Friday, my mind has turned to taking an the advanced test - thinking that as I’m new I’d rather do something longer term to stop me picking up bad habits/ increasing my confidence and making the best out of the biking I have. … plus there’s the benefits of lower insurance.
Has anyone done this? I’ve been on the IAM/ ROSPA website and I’m surfing to get ideas of the best course of action. Quickness of acheiving the test is not the priority, it’s the learning/ advice/ level that I’m wanting to acheive over time -plus to have fun. Rather then sending me loads of links (I can surf the internet with training companies thanx but I’m more inclined to stick with the training company that got me through first time with DAS if that it the case) please just point me in the right direction!
I’m fairly new to London and bikes, hence the posting and I’m based in the city so can easily get N/E/S/W of the city. Any recommendations of personal experiences appreciated!
I can’t recommend the IAM enough - they’re a fantastic bunch or people who’s primary concern is that you get the right training and that you get to a very good standard - and then they work tooth and nail to keep you at that standard through club events, ride outs and specialist training days.
You can engage as much as you want and become a real integral part of the club - or you can, as I do - stay on the outside and only take part in the bits that you want to improve.
It’s also pennies - discount if you’re under 25 - I think the latest price is £80 for the first year then about £20 after that to keep your membership.
signed up to ‘Skills for life’… and hightlighted the London (east) advanced group - so waiting for the ‘pack’ through the door… then I’ll get in touch with the group to organise an observation ride.
I 2005 i did the I.A.M advance course which was brilliant, i did mine with richm. I can highly recommend the I.A.M to anyone thinking on doing an advance riding course.
Poo, bum, willy, I’ve been meaning to go along to their “last Tuesday of the Month” meeting and each month I bloomin’ well forget to!
Do you know if they allow people to just turn up at their Sunday sessions? I think I could benefit from the skills of more experienced riders (no, I KNOW I could!) and they’re just around the corner. I haven’t been out on my bike since the schools broke up and I’m getting really itchy! All dependent on the flipping babysitting of course…
Yes, I really enjoyed coming out with you guys… so don’t worry I’ll make a reappearance!! I’ll see if I can make next tues - it clashes with a prior arrangement at present that I’ll trying to shift. I’ll let you guys know if I’m around though. Thanks for all the advice so far!
