so after my blackwall tunnel accident, I got my Bike sent over to Sudden Impact for an accident repair quote. They came back with £5808! Apparently my bike is so trashed, they were wondering how I got away without breaking any bones. By the sounds of it, most things need replacing - you name it - I need a new one. The list was endless. This can now end several ways:
I win the claim I’m filing with Rider Support - Bike gets written off, I get my bike valued and paid off
I Lose the claim. Left with a bike that I have to sell off to salvage. (dont have fully comp;))
Claim gets split - god knows what I get.
My issue however is the fact that I want to keep the yellow rims from my Bike, for potential future use on another bike. I may be on the hunt for another SV650 after this all ges sorted. I also have a Micron Exhaust that I may keep if its still looking and sounding ok.
If I Win the claim and my bike gets written off, will I be able to keep my rims?
If I lose the claim, I could just take my rims off, and sell the rest off to salvage, right?..
Am I overlooking anything obvious here, or is this the way to go about keeping things from a trashed written off bike.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated,
If you win your claim they will require 2 estimates and an engineer review (usually). This will determine whether they will write it off or repair.
If they write it off you can accept cash in loot i.e. the market value of the bike minus what your bike is worth in its current state. You can haggle hear and get a bit more cash as they dont want the hassle, prob shouldnt accept the first offer unless u feel it is fair.
If they repair then you have no choice in the matter I think.
This is excluding injury money, leathers helmet, time without a bike etc…
My preference is that my bike would be repairable, dont really want another bike. But lets assume Sudden Impact are on the expensive side with their £5808, whats the max difference quote I’d realistically get from somewhere else anyways?..Probably nothing significant enough to make repair cheaper for a 3rd party than writing it off!
Either way, if it gets written off, is there still a way to keep my rims?
Yes buying the bike back cash in loot will get u the wheels (not to mention the rest of the bike). Or at a massive risk trying to find out which breaker its being sold to and buy it from them.
I have used Sudden Impact before and they are about avergely priced and do very good work. So any differing estimate imo will be pretty minimal in difference.
Theoretically the insurer will be open to negotiate on such things, but obviously you need to make sure that both your insuerer and the other party’s insurer know you want things form the old bike before they dispose of it.
yeep, ure right. Just remembered the sudden impact lady telling my the front rim needed replacing (in a huge list of many other things).
Well, there goes the rims idea.
But I was thinking, could I just not get the list of parts I need from the dealer, find them (on ebay, etc over a painstaking amount of time), and then present my parts and bike to a mechanic and just pay labour?
sorry i was right doesnt’ take much to damage a rim (even a bit pothole can do it). wouldn’t fancy riding round with a ‘possibly’ dodgy wheel when it does all the braking
i’m sure you’re entitled to an itemised version of the quote. however you need to be careful with crash repairs as sometimes the initial inspection doesn’t spot all the damage. you could end up getting all the parts and then the mechanic discovers an extra prob when he gets to work like the headers being screwed etc. even if you didn’t need more parts, the labour can end up being substantial if they have to do a lot work to sort it.
how much is the bike worth? it sounds like the sell for salvage and buy a new bike would be a better option - you could sell the bits at your leisure and would have more piece of mind about the bike you’re riding
yeeh, that might not be worth the time/effort/potential money.
Well since my accident, I have been looking online (autrotrader, MCN, ebay):
Got my Black SV back in March, 650, 02, + yellow rims/heated handlebars/micron exhaust - £1700.
Now, I’m finding Black SV650’s 02’s with no added features with 30,000 on the clock selling around the £2000 mark. Did I find a bargain, or are prices going up again?!
I’m comtemplating a Er-6f as a next bike perhaps if that was the case, and try and just get more money than I bought it for if I win the claim.
Any idea how much I’d get for that bike in total if i sold it for salvage, or kept it and sold the parts myself?
Prices have gone up because it is peek bike selling season and because some European buyers are buying up UK stock leaving the UK market supply a bit depleted with the effect that sellers can knock up the price.
