Is there any evidence available (not just general consensus) that once a motorcycle helmet that has been worn and damaged (no matter how minor the damage) in an accident should be replaced without question, due to the unknow change of structural integrity within the helemet shell?
The isurance company does not want to pay out for a new helmet…the general consensus, and my attitude is, that once involved in an accident, you do not use the helmet again and buy new.
My son had just been to J&S in Watford, bought a new £500 helmet, had that on and his other one strapped to the bike when he was taken out by a car driver.
He claimed back for both helmets, and was paid out in full (as well as bike and clothing damage), I’ll see what advice I can find for you.
The accident was last year, and I didn’t take a picture of the helmet…and this is the third party insurance that is asking the question…not my own.
I know it is general concencus to replace the helmet without question…however, does anyone know of any articles from the press or motorcycle institutions that would back me up, as I want to write back with “quotes” that the insurance company cannot argue with…as you all know…it’s your head it the helmet and no one else’s.
i personally don’t entirely agree with your statement. the helmet may have taken a knock but no visible marks may be evident (scratches, marks etc.) therefore it should be replaced anyway.
“If a helmet suffers an impact and any doubt exists as to its further ability to protect, it should either be returned to the manufacturer for competent inspection or discarded and replaced.”
if you have legal cover, you can claim back everything that was damaged no matter how minor, i claimed for my helmet, leathers, backpack and boots, they will not give you the full amount back as they will say that the item was not new when involved in the accident, take photo’s of all you gear that was damaged and say that they are available for inspection and there ya go. You will get your money back I did
oooooo and don’t forget injury, bet you got a bad case of whiplash
