A Pain in the neutral

ok HELP…

My bike changes gear no problem what so ever, but when I’m in 1st trying to get into neutral it rarely does it, most times I can do it if I switch the engine off, but some times that does not work (like today) so having to sit at the lights hold the clutch is not fantastic could anyone shed some light on this one for me.

Check your gear linkages don’t have any slop in them.
When was the last time you changed the engine oil?
Then check the clutch is set up properly and your drive chain is correctly adjusted.
Next check the mechanism that rotates the selector drum.
If all above is working, you have checked everything you can get at easily, then its internal and probably the selector forks and means a strip down…

If you have an H/C then give it a bleed or if not then give you bike an oil change before taking it to a shop.

gix,

thanks is there anyway you could put this in a laymans term or maybe explain a little more as I’m a complete novice I have the trusted haynes manual but how do I nkow if the drive chain is correct and check the clutch is correct?

h/c???

Hydraulic clutch.

I have the same issue on my gixxer. No amount of fiddling with the linkage (race rearsets) or clutch cable has resolved it. Clutch has been warranty’ied as well since the problem, still there. I’m going to take it in to be looked at soon.

no my clutch is the standard cable clutch, tried moving the screw next to the lever but has not made much of a difference…

how do I know how much oil I need in there as there is no dip stick on my bike (with the exception of me) and you cannot see the level due to the way the oil entry whole has been designed…

You need to buy a Guzzi ! You get 4 neutrals - one between every gear - thrown in for free!!!

AND , as a bonus you get a loverly kerrrrrr-ker-Klunk! noise when you actually do find a gear ( mind you it’s normally third when you want first. Moto Guzzi - Va Bene - Sometimes

Seriosluy what bike have you got?

try puting it into neutral whilst moving - some bikes just need to be slightly moving to get into neutral easily!! That or your boots are to thick and you can’t feel when its in neutral??

If you’ve got an SV too much or too little oil can cause this problem, and to check the oil run for about 10 mins, turn off leave for two and look in the inspection glass. Mines on the right hand as you sit on the bike just behind the front of the rear brake lever. Oh and make sure the bike is upright.

H

triang, it is an nsr125, I only have 1 neutral and that is when it feels like it.

Sean, I cannot believe I did not think about trying that myself, I will give it a go thanks…

I have the same problem, but it’s only happened in the last 3 days. Bike has to be rolling or off to hit Neutral now.

Ok - my old CCM witha a Suzi DRZ engine had the same problem and as mentioned by someone else it was all down to filling with too much oil…

ps dunno if you realised the Moto Guzzi neutrals are all ‘false’ ones - they ain’t desined that way

too much oil?

In what way does it stop the neutral, I may be a touch guilty of this one.

Dunno - beats me - but someone told me it check, I was overfull and after I got it back to normal I had no more problems???
