Changed the oil and filter on my bike (very messy as no filter key so oil got everywhere) about a month ago. But there is still a funny burning smell and some smoke when i start her up. By the time shes warmed up its gone and no strange noises so put it down to oil on the down pipes, but kinda thought that owoulda burnt off by now.
Considered going to a garage but by the time i get there its all sorted so nout to see and dont have the language to ask about it - damn it! So should i be worried ya reckon? Could it just be that i need to clean her thouroughly or should i get herdown a garage sharpish??
I’d clean it as thoroughly as possible, as that is a cheaper choice than taking it to a professional mechanic. If you’ve been riding it for a month, that probably means that nothing is seriously wrong with it. If it persists another month, you might take it to a mechanic. But you knew that, right?
smoke at startup, as long as it’s not from the tailpipe, is oil dripping onto exhaust pipes and engine body itself. fine when cold, but burning as the pipes get hot. you most probably have a small leak from the filter you couldn’t torque up properly. nothing to worry about, but needs doing up asap.
Weather is glorious thanks - blue skies and about 17/18 degrees - mmmmm. As for the bike, if there is a leak, what do i need to do? Just tighten the fliter a bit right? The smokes not black by the way, and not thick plumes of the stuff so might e oK right?
Damn it, should have just got the garage to do the grease monkey stuff!!!
Damn it, have looked under the bike and there is a small amount of oil coming down the down pipes - grrrrrrrr. I put a little oil around the rim before screwing (no jokes please!!) but am worried htat i now need to spend another small fortune on oil etc and do the job again.
Any tips that dont involve removing the oil and starting again???
just replace the filter. take it off. buy a small amount of oil. fill the new filter up with oil before you put it on and smear a generous amount on the seal. simply do it up hand tight…as in as tight as you can get it with one hand and jobs a good un. oil filter should be no more than a tenner.
Just seen this. You might just need to tighten the filter up a tad. Can’t you ask one of your soldier friends to give your thingy a tweak?
You could also see if you could get hold of a strap wrench… no Terry I said a Strap Wrench:w00t:This will give you a better grip to tighten the filter:)
