A Letter from a refugee....

For those that don’t really know my personal life,i come from a artistically talented family…one of these greatest talents is my uncle…currently living in Wisconsin USA…he is a song writer and photographer also fantastic in literature…I would like to share a piece of work he has just wrote as its just superseded most of what ive read of late…

i hope you enjoy…

I am sorry to say that it is with a mournful heart that I write to you today. My mind has always been troubled with the thoughts and actions of those we employ to take care of us, but now my malaise is complicated with fear and outrage, and yet I am emasculated. A series of events has allowed my country’s leaders to imprison my people, and I take solace in the thought that I managed to escape when I did. Without the love of my wife and children I would surely be lost.

At the time of my escape, the process was already well under way. Hard work for little pay had already been supplemented by the philosophy of ‘living for the weekend’, perhaps resulting in rife, alcohol driven street violence. Our every move has been monitored with sophisticated cameras for years, and laws are being perverted almost daily. A few months before I left our right to peaceful protest in public places in our nations capital had all but been taken away from us. Yet, the news I have received from my friends and family since my departure has me in a deeper lament for the liberty and security of those I have left behind.

Whole villages of immigrants are imported, lured by false prospects and herded into purposeful dormitories, because they do not apply to our employment laws. There are plans to improve street surveillance with directional microphones and identification cards are but a few months away, the information contained in the registry to be sold to anyone with adequate financial status. Our anti-protest laws now extend to the rest of the country and it seems that anyone can now be arrested for the merest infraction of our organised crime and anti-terrorist laws. Anyone can be held for months without charge. Even our own citizens are being extradited to other countries for ‘crimes’ that they commit in their own.

A man was arrested for manufacturing poison and, although there was no evidence and he was proven innocent in court, he has been placed under house arrest indefinitely. A couple were arrested and face three months imprisonment for reading aloud the names of the war dead in front of a memorial. A woman was arrested for eating a cake, iced with the word ‘Peace’, in public. A law is now being passed to make growing your own vegetables illegal, for pity’s sake! Where will it all end?

There is no real option against our current leadership and apathy is rife, yet we are told to be grateful that we live in a democracy. In these times semantics and denial are the shields of the dictator. Even if the current leadership were to be deposed, the laws that have been passed over the last seven years have ensured our suppression.

It is hard to believe that it has come to this. Anyone reading this letter, who didn’t know me, would think that I was living in an occupied country during the last world war, or that I was in one of the last communist nations. It would be easy to mistake me for a citizen of an African dictatorship, but I am not. I am English, born and bred, and this is the twenty-first century.

My natural instinct is to stand up and voice my concerns, to fight for myself and the one’s that I love but, as I have said, I am powerless. I am the guest of another country and at the mercy of the immigration process. My wife has ensured me that she would follow me to the ends of the earth, but if I were to be extradited, my family would be subjected to the same oppression that I have escaped. I fear that if this letter were to fall into the wrong hands, that I would be subjecting them to this tyranny. What am I to do? As I write this, I am watching my children play without a care, as children should, and I think that perhaps I should silence myself, accept and persevere. It is so difficult to watch my beloved homeland’s decline with clenched teeth.

That is why I have written to you. I must apologise for burdening you with my heavy soul, but I must release my concerns and, beyond my family and my friends, you are the only one that I trust. I don’t have to tell you never to speak of this missive or it’s author. I hope that you will fight on my behalf, while I await our fate, and that you escape from this yourself.

I hope that this will all end soon and I thank you for your shoulder in these troubling times.

Fondest Regards,

Winston.

smiled:D.

It is a well written article and not nice to read about the way your uncle (and many others) feel.

The thing to remember is that there are always people worse off than you, although the UK has its problems, there is a lot to be thankful for and it is still offers a much better quality of life than many countries-hence the reason why a lot of people come here.

It is true that there will always be people worse off than yourself, but I wrote this piece to illustrate that unless something is done soon, then those worse off could be us…

Sorry but it sounds like a load of bllcks to me.

:hehe:

probably becouse there’s no pictures eh chelsea fan?

thank you for you valid input on such a crackin peice of writing…

maybee i’ll post some peter and jane books soon… just for you…;).

or mabyee alittle mr men?

smiled:D.

Don’t know why but the prose style reminds me a bit of ‘Lord of the Rings’. :hehe:

So is America the land of milk & honey then? As thats not what my aunt who has lived in America for years tells me.

compared to this labor gov…ummm yes…lol…

smiled:D.

You are right, American isn’t the land of milk and honey to most people (I will be the first to admit that the US gov has done some horrendous things, but the gov is not the people), but it does have lots of things still going for it…for example, It’s remoteness. It sounds like your aunt is living in either a large town or city (I could be wrong), but there are still a lot of more remote places, that are close to large towns or cities, that are free of things like CCTV, heavy (yet seemingly ineffective) police presence and street violence. We are not afraid of hoodies around here! Another example would be the the people here still have the right to FREE protest without written permission from the gov. I can understand anyone being defensive, as this piece was written in defense of my own country. We are the checks and balances. I just think that we should get in there before we no longer can. In the words of Mark Thomas: “If you are not annoyed, you’re not paying attention!”

Sorry if I caused you any offense.

Ade.

Thanks for stepping up for me dude, but maybe we should have just ignored him. He’d probably be one of the first to complain when he is pulled for an ID check just for going down the pub for a pint, or if he was turned down for a job because he had something nasty on his ID registry file. But still, it was funny…Cheers dude.

Ade

Thanks, man. Not sure I deserve that kind of comparison, but thanks all the same.

Well…err…im completely lost now…erm…and we are supposed to do what exactly? …is this something that is being brought to our attention for just, information…or is there some underlying point? if so, as i said, im lost…im sure america is not the only country with problems, just take a look at london nowdays…from the start of the year more teenagers have been killed. There are so many of them on drugs now, more crime, more of everything…seems people on drugs think they are invincible and will take on anyone in anyway, people dont even want to walk our streets after dark …dont get me started on OUR government…they cant even sort out our roads, full of pot holes for us bikers to end up dead or badly injured from hitting…read MCN this week!! (ok so thats going off this subject a tad, but still …) I dont get what this has to do with biking…ok so im blonde so it has to be explained to me…yeh?

And Breath;)

Cant…got the flu …this is first time ive had chance to get on the ol laptop, so im …catchin up :w00t:

I wont say GWS cos I just did on the BMM thread;)

It’s ok Jules, it’s just a forum! But it could be more. It sounds like you are just as worried about things as I am and, like many people, you are at a loss as to what can be done. If you want to do something, here are a few links to help you out:

Check these out and they might be able to point your voice in a good direction.

As for what this has to do with biking…Bikers have some of the best campaigners in Britain. I was talking to Smiled this morning about their active roll in the protests against rising fuel costs a few years ago. And as for the London Bikers, they regularly do things for the Make A Wish foundation. Making someones day is just as important!

Ade.

Aahhh that explains a bit more, Smiled would help anyone if he could…like many of us…i know this is something that is not going to be sorted out quick though…you could say same thing about …say racism…its something that just wont go away…and its just so sad…and im not informed enough to have an opinion…sadly

Glad to help! It’s true that this kind of stuff isn’t going to be sorted out overnight, but as long as there are voices and free minds, there is hope!

No offense taken  However some sweeping statements IMO.

Anyway, Welcome to LB  See you in the Newbie section
