A good first bike?

As some of you may know from comments in other threads, I am looking at pass my big bike test and sell my 125 this year. The hardest part is picking a bike, or even a type of bike?

I’m currently fairly interested in SuperMoto bikes, because they seem forgiving to new riders and are light and versatile. However, most of my riding is in London and the surrounding areas.

I’m interested in travelling on my bike, so something that can do slightly longer journeys would be good. Speed is less of an issue to me, reliability, comfort, versatility are more important.

I’m looking for around a 600cc bike costing around £2500, used.

I’m very open to suggestions, so please go for it!

P.S. No garage, so perhaps I should go for something less theivable?

Cheers all.

ive never had a 600 so i cant realy give advice on wich is better.that price range your looking at 02 03 models-basicly all the same just differnt colours

id go for kwak 636

a supermoto is the best way to lose your licence:)

i went for a cbr600f as my first bike, a good bike to learn on, fairly forgiving and you can keep learning on it while not getting bored of it and its power. mine generally does 130-140 miles a tank and about 100-110 miles of commuting. ive done over 900 miles in 24 hours on it so its doesnt hurt too much for long journeys imo

I reckon this should suit ya :stuck_out_tongue:

Seems like people don’t think a super moto is a good idea? Thanks for the suggestions folks, I am noting them all down

a supermoto is the best second bike you could get

loads and loads of fun to be had but cirtainly not an all rounder

Don’t bother getting one you won’t have time to ride it as your allways on here.

SV650 light, cheap and very forgiving.

Hahah Tiggi and Trackday Junkie. Thanks for the comments  :stuck_out_tongue:

If a SuperMoto is not an all rounder, where is it lacking?

250mile oil change, small tank, not comfy, deep pockets, not good 2up, kids take them all the time.

i only ride weekends and track days so it does me but for every day use i’d get something else

+1

unless you have a car, shitloads of chain’s…forget a supermoto, then theres the regualr servicing, the very small tank range…

great 2nd bike or just for weekens etc but not practical as an everyday bike.

small list for of possibles, all fiarly cheap all go well, all will teach yopu more than a 125:D

CBF500

SV650

CBR6

XT660X- these look like a supermoto, they are i spoe just not as hardcore as a KTM, much more practical;)

you know hwat i would say anyway…SV all the way:cool:

dont agree in the ‘forgiving’ note, no big bike is forgiving if you get it wrong, specially a vee twin, uite easy to lock the rear wheel if ya not carefull…not exactly forgiving.

petrol consumptionwhen i got my first it was a tie between the SV650s and the CBR600 however after sitting on both of them i prefered the CBR

ok so i might be buying a bike buy the end of the week:D:cool:;):P:D:)

spending around 2000 either r1/rsv or cbr 929 around the 2000 year

what would you guys get

thats what it boils down to! personal choice…defo agree its best to sit on a few see what feels comfertable, SV’s are in a lower insurance group than CBR6’s that clinched it for me.

You forgot bits falling off …;):w00t:

it all depends if it practical for you

if you just like cruising around the get a dragstar if you get time to clean it

cb500 good bike cheap reliable if you dont wont to race everyone you get use tothe speed a bit quick

so get 600 or 650 if you got time to clean it then a street bike is good fun too

if not then a sports tourer with a full fairing better for long journeys top speeds can be fun too

its what you wont out of it or wont it for you,

Sorry, couldn’t resist, on a serious note though my 1st bike was and still is a CBR600F, for me it was a choice between that or the SV650, I prefered the look and feel of the CBR so that was that.

I always say this, but at the end of the day it’s up to you, everyone is different, you need to sit on loads of different bikes and see what you like best

A great first bike you say? How about a 2001Y CB500 with a touring screen and sports exhaust.

With respect to supermotos you may need a support vehicle to accompany you, however, on the upside you’ll only need to shell out for rear tyres.
