40,000 mile service

Ive decided to do some of all of the bits of the 40,000 mile service myself to save on costs but ive become a bit confused…i spoke to the guy at the shop and i vaguely remember him saying the 48000 is the major service and the 40,000 would be just the air filter plus the 4000 mile stuffbut…

the confusing bit is in the haynes manual, the schedule has this:

4000 mile service
8000 mile service
12000 mile service
16000 mile service
24000 mile service

The 12000 mile service is the air filter. But surely the 40,000 mile service is actually the 16000mile service (valve clearances etc) as 24000 plus 16000 = 40,000??? and 24 plus 24 = 48000 (major service)

One of us has it wrong (probably me)?

Any clues?

I’ve just picked up my Haynes manual and the miles which you are referring to is KM on my manual.

Lets say that the bike is at 0 miles.
The first 600 miles, is the 600 miles service (lub chain etc…), then the next 600miles is the 600 miles service (lub chain etc…) and the next 600 miles is the 600 miles service and the next until you get to 2500 on the clock or near enough and then the 2500 miles service kicks in (value clearances etc…). then from 2500 your next 600 miles is the 600 miles service (lub Chain etc…) then again the next 600 miles from the 2500 + 600 is your 600 miles service, do the 600 miles service and soo until you get to the next 2500 miles i.e. 5000 miles and then you do the 2500 miles service and the 5000 miles service (change engine oil etc… and soo on…

I hope this clear it up for you, or maybe I confused you more… :D:D

appletwist You’ve certainly confused me.

Life used to be easy as almost all vehicle services were based on 3000 mile intervals and many still are.

Every 3000 miles, some sort of service was required, just the amount of things covered in those services changed.

Once you’d got past the first few of those 3000 mile services (commonly the first few were more thorough than the ones later in the vehicles life) they just fell into a pattern with the very big ones being at 24, 48, 72 000.

I think your dealer is probably right but there is nothing wrong with more frequent services, you’re just going to be spending more money/time than is possibly necessary.

i know on my speed triple my services are very 6000 miles, and my major one is due at 48, although saying that i had the shims, and valve clearances done at 42 when she was having lots of cam bits replaced…
