250 > 600

Yo,

Ive been thinking today, im currently on a 250 while on the 33bhp restriction.
After i want to go from a baby ninja to a bigger ninja.

Is it that bad going from a 250 to a 600?
I will have been riding just over 3 years when my restriction expires. (1 yr on a 125 and 2 on a 250)

Andy

i can’t see why it would be a problem, sounds like you’ve got a really good basis so far! I think if you can afford the insurance etc of a 600 sports bike then just go for it… it will only go as quick as you tell it too

I have far less time under my belt than you and i’m on a zx6r. I’ve not had any power related “moments” so far… normally it’s more down to my goldfish-like attention span!

Ah right, wicked.

I assume thats your bike in your Avatar?

05/06 isnt it?
Thats the year i want

Im really looking forward to moving up, but its a while away.

I laughed at your Goldfish comment, i can relate to that…

Guys in here might think I am stupid but I was on 50cc Vespa for 1 year and a bit then 125 for 4 months then 600 for 3 months and now I am on a R1. I am not a very good or experienced rider but if I can manage from 125 to 1000 within a year then anyone can. go for it if you feel you can.

personally i applaud you for taking the gradual step

In my opinion it is how it should be as it gives you the ability to expand your limits whilst not exceeding them and trying to ride to the bikes limit …

You will find your self a better rider for the experience of the 250

It is you in control of the bike not the bike controlling you …

Insurance could be the sticking point. If you’re unsure you’ll manage the bigger bike you should get more training first. If you go for it the first few weeks you need to take very easy. Don’t go for a long ride first time out on a new bike.

i passed my test and went straight onto a 750, not the best move for me as im a speed freak so iv had a few near misses but its all down to the individual in my opinion

I jumped on a 600 straight after passing.

Like my instructor said, you brain controls your right hand and you control the bike. You can be unsafe on any CC bike.

Providing you take your time to get familiar with the bike I don’t think it will be a problem.

Thanks for all the replies.

Some helpful stuff there, insurance wise… yeah that could be annoying.

The cheapest quotes i seem to get are about 8grand.
Which i dont think they are being serious…

But ill have 3 yrs NCB by then (Touch wood) and hopfully within the next year or so i am joining the Police so that should help.

Im not the tyre of person to be reckless and burn up the road like a nutter, i am very sensible and just love the look and feel of Super Sports, i rode a ZX10R a few weeks ago and it felt fantastic!
It was only round a carpark though.

i can see one problem here…

you lot are crap at maths! :w00t:

250 < 600 not greater!!
:D:hehe::smiley:

otherwise go for it!!

250 to a 600 should be ok. After 3 years you’ve probably calmed down enough to handle it. I went from a 500 to a 600 and that was ok (47 Bhp --> 118). It takes a while to get use to the power, I think the things which normally catch people out are cracking the throttle wide open mid corner or in traffic. If you’ve been riding for 3 years you’ll know that doing that is a bad idea so you should be fine.

I think you’ll enjoy the feeling of hanging on rather than sitting on when you give it a blast.

Do it man! You’ll love it and 600 Ninja’s are completely bonkers!!

I passed my DAS this time last year having no previous motorbike experience and went straight on to an '03 636 Ninja without issue. That said, I’ve alway considered myself to have good bike handling skills as I used to do loads of mountain biking and compete at it too…the bike handling skills needed are the same for both so I figured I had the edge over the other folks starting out who had no motorbiking or cycling experience.

And Like everyone else says, its you that contorls the bike not the other way around. As soon as you start acting like a fool you’re going to get hurt sooner or later. Just be sensible and you’ll be fine.

But if you’re truly concerned about the step up in power, consider doing some advanved training with one of the IAM clubs. I’m just about to sit my IAM test and the training has given me so much confidence in my riding.

And insurance wise for me; it was around £800 TPFT with a 0 excess, including personal accident cover, helmt and leathers cover, european breakdown and key cover. This was with zero no-claims bonus, living in West London, bike on the driveway over night, 3 points for speeding, one at fault and one non-fault claim from my car.

LoL helpful, thanks for that.

As you mentioned, the throttle will be the only thing i have to get used to.
But that wouldnt take that long.

I am so used to the power of the 250 now, i find my self ragging it everywhere and still not even being near the speed limit.
My confidence and what i am capable of out weigh the bike rather then vice versa…
I was on some twists today (60 limit) and i was going round the bends at about 35/40 tried accelerating out of the corner and it just takes so long to get up to 60…

A decent 600 will do 70 in 1st gear in about 3 seconds so no problem getting up to 60.

Yeah lol, no problem there…

But thats what i want. Not to be able to do that… But i like having a bike that i know is more powerful than ill probably use.

Like i used to be with my 250.

Wont be a problem for you, you have taken things gradually. There will be a big step in power, but you wont go mental as you know how the throttle works ;)But the insurance will be a prob if you are looking at such a new model, also remember that those are pretty focused bikes that are very close to track-ready. The hard suspension might be offputting straight away.

So I might suggest an older model, the 2001-3 are very good machines, or something like the Honda CBR600F or Yamaha Thundercat. All very capable bikes and you can still learn a lot from them…

WOW Thats quick :w00t::w00t::w00t:

Im expecting insurance to rape me to be honest.
I know it may make me sound squiddy, but im set on a post 05’ model.
Im not keen on the design of the previous models.
But i dont mind the 04’, even though the 03’ is similar.
I probably would go as early as 03’, because thats when the models really when throught a huge revamp and im not keen on the pain schemes of previous designs.

Im set on getting a ninja as well, i dont really like the 600’fs, i sat on one yesterday infact and it just didnt suit me.
For some reason it just didnt feel right.

I just love the look of the tail exhasuts, but thats not a necessity.

If i keep my bike in its current condition, Nearly perfect (touch wood) it should be trade-in-able for nearly the cost on about an 03’/04’ ninja.

hehe no problem, I understand, both the revamps are very good looking bikes (I prefer the 04 version even to the underseat exhaust ones… ) - you’ll enjoy whatever you get

Yeah I’m sure I’ll love what I get.
The side exhaust ones would look nice with a neat little stubby can.

Going back to what I mentioned earlier about moving up to a bigger bike, but not being worth it as it will still be the same power.
I was put ring with a mate what has a restricted 660 and it does still have a he’ll of alot more torque then my bike.
Just need to get to work on my insurance rates
