2011 Borough Market Parking Rules

Guys and girls,

The 2011 biking season is pretty much upon us and it appears the weekly Borough Market meet is getting busier, which means parking is again going to be a problem.
Hardly a year goes by without us getting rather pointed emails from either the market itself or owners of adjacent businesses about where bikes are parked and the noise we all make using them.

So this thread is here to remind those of us who may have forgotten the rules (if tonight’s meet is any gauge that’s a lot) and for those new to us / the meet it’ll be an introduction.

  1. The principle problem is the noise our un-baffled bikes make scaring/annoying/disturbing those dining in the restaurant above the meet (the grey building whose legs we sit and leave helmets around, and those in the Black and Blue restaurant on the corner (with the bull on the top).

That means parking on the pavement under the restaurant is a no-no of epic proportions. The noise of any bike, road legal or otherwise, is magnified a lot under there and it is without doubt going to get us banned from being there or at the least a traffic warden down to ticket those bikes parking there (on the pavement).

Parking against the glass windows of the restaurant also is a no-no. That alley road, though very broad as it meets the street, is market property and that means we’re not allowed to park on it. But aside from any legalities none of us would be happy sitting eating our meal to have a pair of headlights coming at us only to stop inches from our plates. Or the rider’s backside and exhaust equally close by, rattling the silverware.

Examples of both are here:

Don’t do any whiz pops, burn outs or excess revving of bikes, common sense you’d think but not so, many members have displayed a staggering ignorance for those around them by hitting rev limiters etc as they leave. And of course there’s the old “give it a quick handful up the road so they’ll all hear me leaving” thing which may not annoy those dining but does annoy those living up the one-way street out of the market.

  1. Market Property parking. Parking market areas on the right as you come in to meet, under the market roof, is also a no-no. The market has chased us off this area many times as loading goes on through the night and these areas are in, apparently, constant use. Whatever, it’s private property and we’ve been told to stay off.

Areas here are all on the right covered by stalls. Do not park there, no matter how tempting.

So where can we park?

Well the principle area is on the road ‘in front of’ the Roast’s legs. It still annoys them, oh yes you betcha it does, but since it’s a public highway that means we have parking rights. This image shows all the bikes in the foreground parking where they should.

You can park on the left of the previously mentioned approach to the meet, but that is double-yellow and you take your chances. Otherwise it might mean parking around the other side of the market or on the road as it heads right past the Black and Blue under the railway.

So everyone please PARK CLOSE TOGETHER. The above image, though in the right place shows a lack of thought as each bike is taking about 3 bike’s (ok, well mebbe 2 7r’s worth) of room.

If in doubt don’t park there. simple as.

People who are seen parking where they shouldn’t will get a name and shame. Anyone who leads to a complaint for parking and / or noise will be given a written warning (or a ban if they get lippy about it).

Seriously gang, we will get banned from being there. Did anyone notice how many police were circulating tonight? It is a very real risk so please help each other out with parking and keeping the meet open.

Ta muchly.

indeed very good points m8 but also point out any1 that does not like us there but get a bit of trade from us too, just so we can avoid giving them custom.

but common sense is a must.

All fair points. It’s a great meeting place and not worth jeapordising.

RE parking under the restaurant. If bikes were wheeled up there (engines off) would that be a potential solution if additional parking were required??

I’ve only been to BMM 6 or 7 times (but will be a regular this year), but judging by my visit in summer last year it was packed, and I guess this summer will be the same, if not busier.

Not trying to bend the rules here, just thought I’d make a suggestion.

Cheers

Phil

It’s market property and therefore we shouldn’t parking be on it. However teeth grindingly annoying it is thems the rules

Good points Andrew, thanks for reminding.

Although last time I went there were two big trucks that had purposely parked in the only place highlighted above, with a bunch of ‘no parking’ cones around them. That makes life fairly difficult for everyone…but as you mention above, it’s a public parking area, so they can do what they want…?

Is it worth trying to find a bike friendly pub with a lovely big car park to hold the meet in?

+1 to A&7… we dont want to cause trouble as we are guests and although many ppl may not know this it takes alot of work (negotiation) from some guys to ensure we can keep using BM

so play nice

You are more than welcome to find a suitable new location provided it is in the city. That goes for anyone else on here that feels they can find a more suitable place where we will be able to meet up.

We have tried for some time to find a suitable meeting place and as yet found nothing. If you know of anywhere then please let us know.

Land is of such a premium in the city, and driving so pointless, that finding a place with a big car park is incredibly unlikely.

I failed to obey the law of parking at bm last year hence why i dont bother going anymore its all to pc for me an i dont take kindly being spoken to with attitude i save my attitude for those i deem deserve it an dont assume every knows the rules , great post if i had read a post like this in the past i would have been spared to wrath of the powers that be …pmsl

As ideal as BM seems, and as useful as this post is, it does beg the question whether there is a more convenient place for people to meet…

I shall get my thinking cap on

Chris

And this is why (as much as I enjoy meeting up with all LB’ers) I now give BM a swerve. You play with the traffic on the way there, stand around drinking over-priced lattes and eating over-priced chips and then do battle once again on the journey home. And before anyone starts, I am aware the ace is the same but at least its bike-friendly! And as for the threats of written warnings and bans! Get over yourself, this is meant to be a light-hearted bike friendly site NOT work!! Rant over.

Has anyone considered using Guildhall Yard in the City? That is large, very central and has a history of holding motorcycle-related events. There is a nice big wall on one side to park the bikes against, and it’s a great open space (it’s where the gladiatorial contests used to take place in Roman London, albeit that was about 50 feet below current ground level :hehe: )Corporation of London permission would be required but I would say it’s worth a go, if not already attempted.

+1

Whats wrong with the Ace in the summer months? somewhere that actually has bike history to it!

+1

i think you better find a new venue because if you had seen the amount of bikes there last night, and that includes filling all the space that you want kept clear, unless we go back to parking the other side in the road like before

What about streets in the city which get deserted after work hours, like maybe Finsbury Square ?

The whole idea behing BM is to make it a solely Londonbikers meet. The Ace is and always will be a great place to meet up with fellow bikers just not LB specific. This is shown come Newbie night. The reality is the Ace gets more LB attendees during the Winter months because of it being warm and has seating indoors. Besides there is normally a few that ride from BM to the Ace on a wednesday night anyway. Lets not get carried away with the overpriced coffee and chips at BM its not exactly cheap at the Ace either is it?Keep your ideas coming with alternative venues and i’m sure we will get a chance to look into them.

For my sins, sourcing venues used to be a large part of my job. Unfortunately I don’t have another venue off the top of my head that could work, but from experience - a good old research + roam around is often the best way to find places.

I’m up for doing some scouting if anyone else wants to join - we can go and have a nose at some of the suggestions, check out the venue, the people, the parking, the access etc etc.

Let me know…
