Went along to 200mpg.org.uk’s event held at RAF Woodbridge near Ipswich today. Basically there’s a 2-mile runway, they setup timing lights and the end and you blast up there to get the best speed. I went on my GSXR750 K3 with the personal target of (a genuine) 170mph. Posted the following speeds:
168.7mph, 171.2mph, 170.4mph and 170.0mph - job’s a good 'un!
Just a point on speedo inacurracies - those last three runs, my speedo was reading 186mph (as high as it’s calibrated, I think) as I crossed the timing lights. So, a good 10% out and that seemed to be the case with most bikes there.
Essentially it was Busas and ZX12Rs everywhere, and the fastest anyone posted before I left (at about 3pm) was 219mph! Jay, there was a bloke on a K5 Thou doing around the 184mph mark.
Some of them bikes look awesome. Did they have different categories for different types of bike, like normally aspirated and turbo?
I would love to try a top speed run on my bike have seen 183 ( private road of course ) but would like to crack the real 180 barrier.
I have an accelerometer which I used on my car when I was doing that up and that tells you ¼ mile and 0-60 times based on G force. I think it can be calibrated to any vehicle you just put in weight of vehicle and wheel size ( its been a long time since I have used it ). May have to dig it out and try it on the Gixxer.
Hey Silver, that’s pretty cool. Weirdly, I knew about this before I read the site, as I was speaking to a guy today at Snetterton, who spoke of you and your bike! I forget his name, but he knew you by name so I guess it’s a friend. Small world eh!
Love the pictures, the black busa gets my top-vote, it looks crazy! What was the best speed overall? Congrats on 171mph! I was seeing 182mph on the speedo today at Snetterton, with stock gearing.
Small world eh? I guess that was Keith? He was at Snetterton today with some people off another forum. He rode a tuned 1200 Bandit and managed 166mph on the flyer (with no fairing!).
The highest speed apparently was 222mph in the end, by the red ZX12R in one of the pictures above
Archie, there are different classes depending firstly on engine size then the level of modifications allowed.
Does you/anybody else know what those turbo [?] bikes are doing with a second smaller exhaust pipe coming out next to the main one, mini me stylee ? In “the old days” turbos just had 1 fat 3"-4" diameter pipe, occasionally routed into conventional looking exhausts by spoilsports
Clarkson said the other day that a new diesel car engine [think it was the new bmw 535td] has 2 turbos, 1 small, low boost no lag to start it off, the second big, high boost & lag that only cuts in when the engine is spinning up, giving the effect of no lag [the 535td had an equivalent lap time to the 545 petrol version]…is this what is going on there ??
That sounds like a wicked day. Cool pics too! Those Busa’s and ZX12’s are awesome things even standard! has anyone seen the fastbikes vids Mac2-3 where they take Busa’s ZX12’s to france and how fast they are? Silly fast!
It was different! Must have been second fastest in his class as there were quite a few bikes clearing 200mph. But they had different classes depending on the level of modification. Still a damned impressive speed, although I bet he was hoping to crack the magical 200mph barrier?
Kao5, I have no idea mate - I just ride bikes, I don’t know the inner workings!
