07 Z1000 smoking like a chimn ey!

Was out today sharing with my dad on his zed and it’s developed somewhat of a smoking habit from low-mid onwards, nothing on idle.

Service manual points to the obvious - fouled air filter, leaky induction etc

Dropped the oil, nothing wrong with that so will re-fill and change the filter when i collect it.

Air filter was fine, little dusty but certainly nowhere near as dirty as others i’ve seen.

Any other suggestions? Feel a little guilty as i was hooning it most of the day :Whistling:

That engine has a rep for lasting and lasting and is (was?) considered pretty bomb proof.

Unless you have been particularly unlucky, just finish your minor service and see what happens. A bit of oil smoke in itself is not a worry unless the motor is eating the stuff in quantity.

Sounds like you`ve fecked yer dads bike.

Know you feel like a twat, but look on the positive side.

What colour was the smoke? I think black indicates oil burning and blue is fuel

White is a blown head gasket but that would be on idle as well

was thinking same, although black smoke is oil blue is water.

turns out he filled it up with diesel at the first fuel stop

will be fine in a few tank fulls time!

lol. that woulda done it

lol. there’s me scratching my head after a compression test, oil change etc etc. randomly sniffed the tank then got him to check the fuel receipt. d’oh

And it’ll run on diesel?

was diluted with however much petrol was already in the tank, wasn’t noticeably down on power, just smoked like an old train!

Diesel in a petrol engine beats the reverse situation. At least it doesn’t lunch the engine.

Amazing (embarrassing?) how often the first check eludes us.

ha ha, classic!
