'06 Bandit S 650 fuel tank capacity...

Slightly odd question… I’ve notice something a bit odd about my Suzuki Bandit S 650 which I’ve had for about a month now. Just after I picked up her up from the dealer the fuel gauge started flashing so I pulled in and filled the tank to brimming. Admittedly, she was on the side stand because I don’t have the strength to hoik her onto the centre stand, but still… Anyway, 4 commutes and 135 miles later, the gauge gets back to flashing level again (one block left on the fuel gauge out of 5). I fill her up to brimming again, but notice that I only put 13.5 litres of petrol in, which seems odd since the tank should take 20l. I know filling a bike with petrol isn’t rocket science, but am I doing something wrong? Do I have more range than I think when the last block on the display started flashing (as soon as it gets to the last block, by the look of things)? When am I down to reserve fuel - when I get to the last block, or does the last block disappear? I have tried sitting on the bike and filling that way, gently rocking left and right to make sure all the petrol is getting into the whole filling space of the tank, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Apologies for the random and multiple questions!

650s fuel capacity is 19 litres, so when the light starts flashing there’s still 5.5 in there

Well that’s kinda what I thought, so theoretically I should have another 80 miles or so before she starts to cough… I think!

Correct. The flashing warning is well known to be premature. Many bikers use the trip meter

On my 07 1250 - which I think has the same display - I only start to get concerned when the fuel pump and E and F symbols start to flash, and there are no blocks left.

That’s usually around the 140 mile mark on my bike, which has the same sized fuel tank as the 650. And that’s town riding. In the country I get far more miles out of the tank - should get around 170 or more, but tend to to fill up more regularly for fear of being stranded in the middle of nowhere with no petrol station for miles around (not an issue in London).

Aaaaaaaaaaah, ok, so I do get another warning once the last block starts flashing. Cool.

Thanks all!
