Riders who participate in Transport for London (TfL) motorcycle or scooter assessment days during the next three months could win a new motorcycle or scooter in a competition being run in conjunction with the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI).

Motorcyclists in London will be permitted to use the Capital’s red route bus lanes under a new Motorcycles in Bus Lanes trial that has been announced by the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) yesterday (16 June).

Mayor Boris Johnson has today announced he will continue to allow motorcycles to use bus lanes, operated by Transport for London (TfL), for the time being. Johnson observed: "The chaos that was predicted by some doomsayers has clearly not materialised and, as I suspected would be the case, we have found substantial support for the measure.”

An extra £1.5m will be awarded to councils in London and TfL to help them manage their roads, bridges and other assets, Transport Minister Paul Clark announced today.

Apparently Transport for London are receiving very few comments from motorcyclists about the new London-wide TfL trial of motorcycles in red-route bus lanes. ??The latest news is that as part of the evaluation of the scheme 'users views' will be taken into account and 'numbers responding' will play a part in this. ??Clearly none of us want to see a situation where 5,000 cyclists have protested and 200 motorcyclists support. It's this kind of thing that would shift the political balance against us.

To coincide with the opening of London’s red route bus lanes to motorcyclists on January 5th, the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) has today launched a new Code of Conduct for motorcyclists who will be enjoying the new freedom to use bus lanes. The Code has been developed in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and is supported by motorcycle riders’ groups, Motorcycle News and motorcycle dealerships.

Motorcyclists at the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) bike conference this week (30th June 2008) called for greater access to bus lanes. A delegate survey of 130 motorcyclists, representing the IAM’s 19,000 motorcycle members, overwhelmingly supported bus lane access for bikers (92 per cent). The move could have significant improvements for the safety of motorcyclists, say the IAM.

Transport for London (TfL) are at it again! You may not have heard of the proposal by TfL to built a new bridge across the Thames. The proposed Thames Gateway Bridge (TGB) would be a local road bridge connecting Beckton to Thamesmead in East London, with two segregated and dedicated public transport lanes and separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, was forced to issue a statement to confirm the continuing exemption to congestion charging currently enjoyed by motorcycles and scooters. The threat to remove this exemption was revealed by the Evening Standard.

Fresh doubts over the value of speed cameras were raised yesterday after a surge in accidents at sites where they are installed. Official papers show that the number of crashes rose instead of fell at 70 sites in London.
