Riding a motorcycle in low temperatures is not only uncomfortable, but can be dangerous. A drop in body temperature of just 1-2 degrees centigrade can instigate symptoms of hypothermia and may lead to impaired concentration, coordination and drowsiness – potentially lethal when in charge of a motor vehicle.

We all know about the problems in winter, battery dead and the bike wont start again. The clever people at Acumen, the UK’s leading motorcycle electronics manufacturer, have launched an even smarter battery charger that looks completely different from anything else on the market. It is also supplied with the most comprehensive selection of accessories. Like most popular smart chargers, this microprocessor-based unit test charges, maintains and recovers batteries automatically. However, this particular model is housed in it's own splash proof, attractive and robust extruded aluminium casing.
On the front of the casing are simple-to-interpret indicator lights, which warn of incorrect polarity and advise of battery condition and charging status. An internal buzzer to advise of incorrect polarity connection or an irrecoverable sulphated battery backs this up. What really makes this Acumen Platinum smart charger stand out from all of the other competition is the collection of must-have accessories supplied with it as standard. These include a waterproof eyelet lead with waterproof fuse for permanent connection to battery, crocodile lead for temporary connections to battery, a 3-metre extension lead, UK and European mains leads and wall bracket with fixings.

The OptiMate III, which is widely regarded as the power sports industry’s premier automatic battery maintenance charger, gets a facelift for 2006, alongside several other practical upgrades. OptiMate has built its reputation by helping to protect batteries from problems caused by alarms draining power, old age or lack of regular use. The most obvious changes are the new moulded housing of enhanced ABS, which has revised internal architecture to provide an IP42 degree of protection (in practice this means splash-proof, hence the SP designation). The control panel has also had a re-design, making it easier to follow the current (geddit!!?!) status of the OptiMate maintaining, charging or de-sulphate mode.
Other but less obvious, but equally useful, updates include enhanced temperature regulation to keep the external surfaces of the housing temperature below 60°C (“ouch-temperature” for most of us starts at +/- 65°C) at high ambient temperatures. There is also a new self-discharge check that will alert owners to shorted cells.

As the cold, winter months approach, many motorcycle owners will be preparing their machines for long periods of inactivity. And as we all know, lack of use does no good to one of the most important components on any bike, the battery. Unless it is kept fully charged, battery life degrades and replacement periods shorten adding to the cost of bike ownership.
One of the Airflow products, the Airflow Battery Conditioner is a simple, proven and cost effective answer to battery maintenance. It is an intelligent and automatic trickle charger which senses the drop off in battery voltage with time, and automatically turns itself on and off to keep any 12 volt battery safely in tip-top fully charged condition.
