Waymo arriving in London, possibly September this year

This is going to be fun…

Awesome. Would totally try it, especially with my dog as most taxis don’t take pets.

They are everywhere in LA. Very strange to see cars driving around with no one at the wheel like Knightrider.

Both times I’ve been rear ended it was by taxi drivers who were driving while distracted so this is probably a good change.

I’ve used them a lot in SF and LA and think they’re great. I saw one on London Wall three weeks ago scoping out the route.

I understand the only problem they’ve encountered so far is that amorous couples want to have sex in them.

Likewise, I have been physically hit by cars twice while cycling - both times by black cabs pulling crazy manouevres. The second time I got the proper red mist and was yelling so loud that the passengers got out and legged it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

LA, and the rest of USA, has strict anti-jaywalking rules. The UK doesn’t. We don’t even officially recognise the American term ‘jaywalking’.

This will be interesting to see.

The black cab that hit me got out of the car and tried to convince me to wheel the bike out of the road so I could, “get a proper look at it.” When I refused and started taking pictures, he got irate, refused to give details and protested that he was going to lose his fare, because the chap in his car got out. Then he eventually drove off saying that I, “just wanted to hold up traffic.” I didn’t follow it up as the damage to the bike was only minor, the dealership bent a bracket back into shape and it was ok. I reported it to TFL though.

Who’d have thought that self driving cars are easier to make than self closing doors.

Humn……… not a good look. It Turns Out That When Waymos Are Stumped, They Get Intervention From Workers in the Philippines

I expect carnage.

What’s the data link between Central London and the Philippines like?

There are plenty of places my O2 phone has no data, never mind just no 5G.

…CRASH

I’ll give it a go but I’ll still be nervous in traffic on a bike with a Noo-Noo Lorry behind me…At least they are using Jaguars both here and in the States so at least some British workers will get a look in

Doesn’t seem to be overly confidence inspiring Waymo taxi: Watch car veer into Harlesden crime scene - BBC News

Apparently was under the control of a human, though wouldn’t that be exactly what a company that wants no humans involved say?

What is the point in testing if its being driven by a human? I thought the whole idea was like a driving lesson for the AI witha human instructor who can intervene

Another Waymo fail @gautampk.com on Bluesky

Actually that’s a biker fail. Highway code rule 167 forbids overtaking at junctions.

What are they overtaking?

Looks like the Waymo has just turned across the path of the bike. Probably didn’t detect it.

And here’s the streetview Google Maps .

Sorry looks like you’re right, I assumed the bike was filtering past the waymo as it turned. Ignore my comment.
