Michelin Men Get to Know Indy
Yesterday
Michelin’s MotoGP test team visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time on July 1st and 2nd to test tyres in readiness for the inaugural Indy MotoGP event scheduled for September 14th. The two day session between the Dutch and German MotoGP rounds was scheduled thanks to new regulations which allow tyre manufacturers to test at tracks which haven’t previously featured on the World Championship calendar. “These tests are a good thing,” said Jean-Philippe Weber, Michelin’s director of motorcycle racing. “They allow us to get an initial feeling for the track. They also allow us to better understand the track and they give us an idea of how the race weekend will go.”

Record Breaking Win For Spies

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing's Ben Spies won Saturday's AMA Superbike race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, which was a record breaking seventh AMA Superbike wins on the trot!
The two-time AMA Superbike Champion was the pole-sitter in this race, the first of two in the double-header weekend, and led all 16 laps to victory on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000. In addition to this being Spies' seventh win of the season, it also marks his 25th AMA Superbike career win.

Haga Swops Pain for Points

Following a painful crash last weekend at the Salt Lake City circuit, Noriyuki Haga went on to astound doctors and race fans by climbing back on his R1 and taking a ten point chunk out of Troy Bayliss’s championship lead. Yamaha Motor Italia rider Haga fell heavily on the Saturday morning practice session, coming off after a collision with another rider at the Black Rock hairpin. After an examination by the circuit doctor it was revealed he had broken his collarbone in no less than three places and was advised that it was unlikely he would be able to manage any more than one or two laps in the next free practice session.

Corser on the Podium as Haga Defies Pain for Points

Troy Corser secured his fourth podium of the 2008 season after scoring second in race one, while his team-mate Noriyuki Haga overcame the pain and weakness of his multiple right collarbone fracture to take sixth place in race two, despite suffering yet another crash in the opening race at Miller Motorsports Park. In the first event, delayed by a starting grid mix-up between a few riders, Corser was only 2.8 seconds from his first win in Yamaha race colours, pushing hard once settled into position behind eventual leader Carlos Checa. He was a strong podium finisher, almost four seconds ahead of third placed rider, Michel Fabrizio.

Lavilla Scores Points But Leaves America Disappointed

Continuing his unique and impressive record of scoring in every race so far this season in the Hannspree World Superbike Championship, Vent Axia VK Motorsport rider Gregorio Lavilla scored a 13th and a 15th place finish at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City in Utah, USA yesterday.
Handicapped by a qualifying position of 23rd place, the 34 year old Spaniard took to the grid and in the first race of the day, started late and shortened to twenty laps after there was a grid slot mix up, Lavilla battled through to 13th, despite never finding a good set-up for his 2008 Fireblade throughout qualifying.

Kawasaki Riders Work Hard For Points

Makoto Tamada and Régis Laconi (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) rode with conviction in the two Miller Motorsports Park races and each rider scored points at this new WSB venue. In race one, shortened to 20-laps after a startline grid position delay involving backmarkers, Laconi looked set for a strong finish until a crash on lap five stopped him from capitalising further on his seventh place qualifying position. Tamada was a distant 19th in the race, after struggling to find a suitable set-up on his raceday machine.

Fabrizio Steps Up to Podium IN Both SBK Races in Utah

Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) proves that he has taken a liking to America and the Miller Motorsports Park circuit, scoring two-third place finishes here today in impressive style on board his Ducati 1098 F08 machine. A less than perfect start in both of this afternoon's races failed to deter the young Italian rider and he powered his way through the field in Race 1 and again in Race 2 to eventually earn third place finishes in both. Unfortunately the day was not so lucky for fellow Ducati Xerox rider Troy Bayliss who failed to finish Race 1 and completed Race 2 in 22nd position after a technical problem.

Checa Rockets to Double Win at Miller Motorsports Park

HANNspree Ten Kate Honda Carlos Checa posted a superb performance today in the first Superbike race at the Miller circuit, where he claimed his first ever World Superbike win. After a pole position start, Checa came through turn one in fifth spot but quickly gained ground and took the lead over the line on lap 4. He managed to breakaway from his followers and claimed his first ever SBK victory 2.8 seconds ahead of number two, Troy Corser. With his victory Checa secured the 99th win in the Superbike World Championship for manufacturer Honda.

Another Superb Podium for Max!

Team Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner continued his good run of form with a hard fought for fourth place in race one at the Miller Motorsports Park today, before following it up with tremendous runner-up spot in race two. He was at the forefront in both races, had to give way to Carlos Checa (Honda) both times, but knows that his next victory is only a matter of time. Troy Corser (Yamaha) and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) were second and third in race one and Fabrizio again took third spot in race two, behind Checa and Max. Team Suzuki Alstare riders Fonsi Nieto and Yukio Kagayama finished fifth and eighth respectively in race one and then reversed the positions in race two. Series leader Troy Bayliss had a day to forget - he crashed out of race one and finished out of the points in race two after being forced to pit and have his gearlever repaired.

Corser Flying on Day One

Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team rider Troy Corser made a great start to his latest race weekend by posting the second best time of the first official qualifying session at the new SBK venue of Miller Motorsports Park. Corser was one of three WSB riders who went under the previous AMA Superbike lap record, with Troy taking his Yamaha YZF-R1 to a 1'49.636 best. Feeling his way around the 4.905km circuit on his first visit, Noriyuki Haga was still less than a second from provisional pole with a best lap of 1'50.349. Haga was trying out used tyres to make good progress with his overall raceday set-up plan.

Bayliss Quickest in First Qualifying at Miller Motorsports Park

Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) set the quickest time in the first-ever World Superbike qualifying session at the Miller Motorsports Park circuit near Salt Lake City. The Australian clocked a time of 1 minute 49.394 seconds in the one-hour qualifying session, which as a result becomes the new circuit lap record. Second place on the provisional front row, just two-tenths of a second slower, went to another Australian, Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB), who also quickly got dialed in to the US track. Corser was closely followed by Spain’s Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), who headed the timesheets for much of the session, and the increasingly impressive Jakub Smrz (Guandalini Ducati) from the Czech Republic.

Bayliss on Provisional Pole at Miller

The Ducati Xerox Team rode the Miller Motorsports track in Salt Lake City for the first time today, completing an impressive first qualifying session in dry conditions here this afternoon. Troy Bayliss quickly found his feet to take the fastest qualifying time and hence another provisional pole, as well as a new lap record, while team-mate Michel Fabrizio was fifth fastest, also recording one of the top speeds of the day.

Team Suzuki Alstare Learning the Way

Team Suzuki Alstare riders Fonsi Nieto, Yukio Kagayama together with Team Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner used the first day of practice and qualifying at the Miller Motorsports Park to learn their way round the track and get used to racing at high altitude. The 4.907 kilometre circuit is about 1500 metres above sea level and all the bikes are suffering a drop in performance as a result. At the end of the day, Fonsi had qualified sixth, Yukio seventh and Max fifteenth. Series leader Troy Bayliss (Ducati) is on provisional pole, ahead of fellow countryman Troy Corser (Yamaha), with Carlos Checa (Honda) third and Jake Smrz (Ducati) fourth.

Checa on Provisional Front Row at Miller Motorsports Park

HANNspree Ten Kate Honda rider Carlos Checa concluded a strong opening day at the 6th round of the World Superbike Championship at the Miller Motorsports Park and claimed a provisional front row start. Checa was the first rider to dip under the 1’50 minute mark and topped the sheets for a while before concluding the session with a third best time of 1'49.732.

Alessi Second in Glen Helen Opener

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing's Mike Alessi started the AMA Motocross season strongly by capturing second place overall at this weekend's season-opening round at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. Team mate Michael Byrne also had a good weekend, thanks to a sixth-place overall result, while David Vuillemin struggled to17th overall.
In the Motocross Lites class, Ryan Dungey had a fine weekend after taking fourth place overall. Nico Izzi, meanwhile, had a good first moto, finishing eighth, but had some issues in the second moto and wound up with 13th overall.

HANNspree Superbike Team Works Towards USA

The third fly away round of the Superbike World Championship will see the series return to America this weekend for the 6th round of the Championship, hosted at the Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. It will be exciting to see how the 3 men strong HANNspree Ten Kate Honda squad will adapt themselves to the 4.905m long, fast track on the Utah flats. After a difficult last race in Monza, Carlos Checa is eager to make up his loss and put some points on the board to secure his second place in the Championship standings. In the same race Ryuichi Kiyonari turned the continuous progress he showed throughout the last rounds into a maiden appearance on the WSB podium.

Haga & Corser Head to the USA

After two gutsy rides at his team's home circuit of Monza, Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team rider Noriyuki Haga has now moved into overall third in the championship table. At the previous round in Italy Haga only just lost the battle in race one by 0.058 seconds, before going on to win race two by 0.009 seconds. This coming weekend the 33-year-old Japanese star is ready for more podium success at the all-new American WSB venue of Miller Motorsports Park, near Salt Lake City, in the state of Utah. Haga arrived in the USA early to catch up with friends and got the chance to play some golf with legendary racer Kenny Roberts and his family. Ducati Xerox Goes Transatlantic with A Return to USA

The Ducati Xerox Team will tackle a new track this weekend as the Superbike calendar takes them to America and the Miller Motorsports Park of Salt Lake City, Utah. Having successfully hosted the AMA American Superbike series on two previous occasions, Miller this year steps up to the challenge of organising the Superbike double-header, with both the World Superbike and national Superbike teams racing at the circuit over the weekend. The World Superbike series last came to America in 2004 but to the Laguna Seca track, while Troy Bayliss' last visit to the States and that track with the Ducati Superbike Team was in 2002 and resulted in a win.

Early Promise for KTM Lite Riders

The Lites class provided a lot of entertainment to the Glen Helen Motocross fans as they witnessed many battles ensue throughout the entire pack. In the first moto, MDK KTM Lites rider Ryan Sipes came around the first turn in 2nd, while his teammates Matt Goerke and Justin Brayton were involved in a large first turn pile up. Brayton recovered in 29th but Goerke had difficulty starting his bike which caused him to start ¾ of a lap down. Around the halfway point Sipes was still up front battling for a top five position when his bike suffered an electronic issue which kept him from finishing the race. Meanwhile, Brayton and Goerke were busy trying to pass on the fast one-lined track. At the end of the race, Brayton had moved from 29th to finish 17th while Goerke worked his way into 28th.

Solid Start for Nick Wey in San Bernardino

US Motocross Series: 1st round San Bernardino, California, MDK KTM Factory rider Nick Wey earned 9th overall at the first round of the AMA Motocross Series at Glen Helen Raceway. Wey started well when he came around the first turn in 8th at the start of moto one. Unfortunately, he made a couple mistakes that allowed two riders to slip by, moving him back to 10th. He held that position for the remainder of the moto.
