Fast Start for Tech 3 Yamaha on Home Soil in Le Mans

The Tech 3 Yamaha team made a fast start to its home race at the historic Le Mans circuit in France today with Colin Edwards posting the third fastest time in the opening free practice sessions. The American’s best time of 1.34.287 was just 0.060s behind fastest rider Dani Pedrosa as Edwards conducted positive endurance testing on Michelin tyres in overcast but dry conditions. Edwards led the session for a long period as he moved to the top of the timesheets after just 16 minutes. It was over 30 minutes later before he was overhauled in the closing minutes, but the Tech 3 rider was happy with a significant improvement in rear grip helped by a set-up change he first tried in China.

Edwards & Toseland Secure Solid Points for Tech 3

The Tech 3 Yamaha team consolidated fourth position in the Team world championship today after Colin Edwards and James Toseland collected a solid points haul in a tough Shanghai MotoGP race. Edwards, who started from pole position for the third time in his career, had to settle for eighth place after his podium challenge ended when he ran off track at the end of the back straight on lap six. Edwards was holding a comfortable third place at the time and pulling away from reigning world champion Casey Stoner. Edwards lost four places, which he was never able to recover despite a determined ride in the second half of the 22-lap race.

Edwards on Stunning Shanghai Pole, Toseland Secures Third Row

Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards produced a brilliant late attack to claim pole position for tomorrow’s 22-lap China MotoGP clash in Shanghai. Edwards powered his Tech 3 YZR-M1 to a best lap of 1.58.139, which makes the American the fastest rider ever to lap the challenging 5.281km circuit. Edwards’ best time comfortably secured him the third pole position of his MotoGP career with closest challenger Valentino Rossi 0.355s adrift in second.

Edwards & Toseland Upbeat as Shanghai Showdown Begins

Tech 3 Yamaha duo Colin Edwards and James Toseland are confident they can make big improvements after finishing 10th and 13th respectively on a hot and humid day of opening free practice in China. A best lap of 2.01.064 secured 10th place for American Edwards, who made big steps in improving front and rear grip on his Tech 3 Yamaha YZR-M1. Edwards though is still looking to improve feeling with a new front tyre construction, which Michelin is using to cope with the specific demands of the Shanghai circuit, particularly intense heat build-up in the hard braking zones.

Fighting 4th for Edwards, Toseland 7th in Estoril

Colin Edwards claimed his best result of 2008 with a determined ride to fourth place in Estoril today, while a hard fought seventh moved James Toseland into the top five of the MotoGP world championship standings. Lying sixth and tantalisingly close to the leading bunch for the opening nine laps, Edwards comfortably held onto the fourth place that he seized on lap 17 after a mistake by fellow American Nicky Hayden. He briefly threatened to close on Valentino Rossi in third as he posted his fastest lap on lap 19 of 28 with a 1.38.083, but settled for his best result since the German GP last July.

Edwards & Toseland on Second Row in Estoril

Tech 3 Yamaha duo Colin Edwards and James Toseland will start next to each other on the second row of the grid for tomorrow’s 28-lap Portuguese MotoGP race in Estoril. American Edwards missed out on preserving his 100 per cent front row starting record in 2008 by just 0.090s as he finished a qualifying session dominated by Yamaha and Michelin with the fifth best time. Toseland, who will stay with the Tech 3 team for 2009 after agreeing an extension to his current contract in Portugal, was just one place further back with a best time of 1.36.790 securing him sixth. Despite his lack of circuit knowledge at the challenging Estoril track, Toseland still beat a host of more experienced rivals to help Yamaha claim four of the top six places on the grid.

Tech 3 Sign New Deals With Toseland & Yamaha

The Tech 3 team and British rider James Toseland will continue to race together until the end of the 2009 MotoGP world championship. Tech 3 and Toseland have already agreed to exercise an option for the 2009 season after the 27-year-old made an instant impact in MotoGP. Toseland has scored top six finishes in his first two races, and claimed a front row start on his debut in Qatar. Tech 3 team manager Herve Poncharal has also successfully concluded negotiations with Yamaha to continue to run two factory supported YZR-M1 machines beyond the current 18-race campaign. The new contract, signed on Friday in Estoril, will continue Yamaha’s long-standing partnership with Tech 3 that started in 1999. The new contract is for the next two seasons until the end of 2010.

Colin Edwards rode his updated Tech 3 Yamaha to the third fastest time on an opening day of free practice at the Estoril circuit in Portugal hit by unpredictable conditions. Riding the latest spec pneumatic valve YZR-M1 motor for the first time today, Edwards shrugged off a disappointing morning session run in rapidly changing wet/dry conditions to figure prominently throughout this afternoon’s wind affected but dry session. Once he’d climbed to the top of the timesheets for the first time after just 12 minutes, Edwards never dropped outside of the top three as he took full advantage of the extra acceleration and top speed from the latest Yamaha engine. MotoGP world championship leader Dani Pedrosa and 2007 Estoril winner Valentino Rossi only beat his best lap of 1.38.632, as the engine upgrade saw Edwards clock the fourth fastest top speed this afternoon.

James Toseland Claims Heroic Top Six In Jerez

Tech 3 Yamaha’s James Toseland produced a heroic performance in a sun drenched Spanish GP today, the British rider fighting illness to claim a deserved top six finish. In what proved to be a mentally and physically draining 27-lap race for Toseland, the rookie showed great strength of character to become the first British rider since 1990 to score successive top six premier class finishes. Weakened by a serious chest and throat infection all weekend, Toseland slipped down to 10th from eighth on the grid in a frantic opening, but then he produced a series of brilliantly executed overtaking moves to move into fifth by the penultimate lap. Toseland’s never-say-die attitude saw him delight a 131,563-strong crowd with passes on Chris Vermeulen, Andrea Dovizioso and Loris Capirossi in quick succession at the Curva Sito Pons. Fifth going into the last corner, he had to settle for sixth after losing a place in a chaotic finale. Capirossi was the chief benefactor from a tangle between Dovizioso and Toseland as he snatched fifth from the 27-year old.

Edwards Secures Front Row After Eventful Jerez Qualifying

Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards emerged from an eventful Spanish GP qualifying session this afternoon with the third fastest time to maintain his 100 per cent front row starting record in 2008. The American ran into the gravel trap and then produced an early contender for save of the season at turn one before logging a best lap of 1.38.954 to secure a second successive front row clean sweep for Michelin this season.

An impressive performance from American Colin Edwards saw the Tech 3 rider help Yamaha make a dominant start to the Spanish GP in Jerez today. Edwards was a central figure throughout the opening day’s free practice, claiming the third fastest overall time. Edwards, who was third in last year’s Spanish GP, showed impressive form earlier when he posted the fastest time this morning as the European leg of the 2008 season got underway. Edwards bettered his morning time of 1.40.714 with a 1.40.584 this afternoon, and was only beaten by factory Yamaha duo Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi on combined times.

Brimming with confidence after he secured a maiden front row grid position yesterday, the 27-year-old showed no signs of any first race nerves with a flying start. Third at the end of a hectic lap one, he then climbed into second on lap two with a daring overtake on Jorge Lorenzo.

Toseland was in contention to claim a stunning pole position on his MotoGP debut throughout the session. Tech 3 Yamaha riders James Toseland and Colin Edwards got the 2008 MotoGP season off to a flying start in Qatar tonight, ending the opening night of practice with the third and fourth fastest times. Just one week after finishing second in the floodlit IRTA test, Toseland managed to knock 1.1s off his best time from the opening session, shrugging off an early crash to make a confident start to preparations for his MotoGP debut on Sunday night. A best lap of 1.55.812 was the third quickest, just 0.370s off the pace of reigning world champion Casey Stoner.

James Toseland and Colin Edwards proved they are ready for the start of the 2008 MotoGP season after the Tech 3 Yamaha team successfully concluded a long winter testing schedule in Qatar tonight. Toseland came tantalisingly close to topping the timesheets for the first time in his short MotoGP career after an inspired performance on the second night of testing under the Losail International Circuit’s floodlights. Toseland led the way for three hours tonight after posting a best lap of 1.54.592, with the British rider taking full advantage of Michelin’s dominant qualifying tyre. His time, which was 0.5s faster than Valentino Rossi’s 2007 pole position, was only bettered with just seven minutes remaining when fellow Yamaha rookie Jorge Lorenzo went faster by the narrowest of margins.

James Toseland Dazzles At Historic Qatar Night Test

Tech 3 Yamaha rider James Toseland produced a dazzling performance under the spectacular Losail International Circuit’s floodlights to post the fifth fastest time on a historic night for the MotoGP world championship. The British rider was in sparkling form at the first official MotoGP test to be held under floodlights, with the twoday session a dress rehearsal for the season’s opening race to be held in Qatar on March 9. Toseland and Texan Colin Edwards quickly adapted to the unusual conditions, with both immediately producing competitive lap times. Toseland was second fastest until the final hour and Edwards, who had been in the top five for a large part of the first night, eventually finished 10th quickest.

Tech 3 Yamaha rider James Toseland concluded a successful three-day test session at the Jerez circuit today by posting the sixth fastest time in dry but blustery conditions. As well as displaying a fast and consistent pace again today, the British rider showed his resilient side as he bounced back from a crash at the first corner on only his second lap to put in crucial development laps on a range of Michelin rear race and qualifying tyres. The 27-year-old braved the pain of a badly twisted right ankle to post a best lap on a qualifying tyre of 1.39.727 in a 36-lap stint this afternoon. That was faster than reigning world champion Casey Stoner by 0.118s and only 0.179s behind fellow Yamaha YZR-M1 rider Valentino Rossi.

Tech 3 Satisfied After Wet & Windy Pre-Season Battle

Tech 3 Yamaha duo Colin Edwards and James Toseland were satisfied with progress on a rain-hit second day of MotoGP testing at the Jerez circuit in Spain today. Although a top ten finish narrowly eluded both in yesterday afternoon’s 40-minute televised qualifying shootout for a BMW car, Edwards and Toseland made valuable progress in full wet conditions yesterday morning. British rider Toseland clocked the 12th fastest time in the official timed practice, with Edwards just two further places adrift in 14th in a session held on a rapidly drying track following heavy rain earlier in the day. Toseland and Edwards impressed this morning in full wet conditions, with both praising the confidence inspiring improvements made by Yamaha’s 2008 electronics package in the rain. Toseland was fifth fastest yesterday morning, finishing just over one second adrift of reigning world champion Casey Stoner’s pace. And Edwards was eighth, although both found it difficult to significantly improve their times on a drying surface in the official timed session.

Tech 3 Make Progress In Mixed Conditions

Mixed weather conditions couldn’t stop Tech 3 Yamaha duo Colin Edwards and James Toseland from making good progress at the Phillip Island circuit today. The second morning was dominated by persistent rain showers, but typical of the fast changing conditions experienced at Phillip Island, the grey and gloomy skies gave way to sunny but blustery conditions by midafternoon. The day’s unpredictable weather gave Toseland his first taste of Yamaha’s YZR-M1 in full rain conditions, with the British rider gaining valuable experience and data in the wet. Toseland completed 21 laps to post a 1.43.719 for the 11th quickest time. Edwards was eighth quickest in the wet with a new Michelin front rain tyre helping him register a best lap of 1.42.547.
