Carlos Checa Takes Superpole on The Honda HRC

Carlos Checa stole the headlines in Saturday afternoon’s “Special Stage” qualifying session at Suzuka, with a lap of 2’07.587 on the Honda HRC 33. Behind the Honda is the Yamaha Racing 21 team of Nobuyuki Osaki and Katsuyuki Nakasuga (2’07.806) and the Suzuki Yoshimura with Jomo 34 team of Kosuke Akiyoshi and Yukio Kagayama (2’07.969).

Yoshimura Suzuki Wins At Suzuka

Team Yoshimura Suzuki's Yukio Kagayama and Kousuke Akiyoshi raced their GSX-R1000 to victory in the Suzuka 8 Hour World Endurance third round in Japan - the team's first Suzuka endurance win for almost 30 years. It was back in 1978 at the inaugural Suzuka 8 Hour race that the team tasted victory aboard their GS1000R. Kagayama led from the start from Honda's Ryuichi Kiyonari, Norick Abe (Yamaha) and Tady Okada (Honda), opening up a 15-second advantage by the one hour mark when Akiyoshi took over.

An Imposing Line-Up Set To Start of Suzuka 8 Hours

86 teams will take to the track for the ‘Coca Cola Zero Suzuka 8 Hours’, the third race in the QMMF Endurance FIM World Championship series, which kicks off in Japan on 29th July. 18 permanent teams will be on the start line and, as every year, the rest of the racers will be made up of official, semi-official and privateer Japanese teams. The official Honda team, HRC, will line-up with two CBR 1000RR machines. One will be ridden by two stars of world motorcycle racing - Ryuichi Kiyonari, current leader of the British Superbike Championship, and James Toseland, leader of the World Superbike Championship. Tadayuki Okada will be the replacement rider. On the second HRC Honda, Britain’s Jonathan Rea, currently lying second in the British Superbike Championship, will partner MotoGP star Carlos Checa. These two machines are the undoubted favourites to win in Japan. Ryuichi Kiyonari and Jonathan Rea, team-mates in the HM Plant British Superbike team, were the winners of the ‘Suzuka 300km’ race back on 10th June.
