Bayliss Winds up Superbike Career with Double Win in Portugal
03 November 2008
Troy Bayliss wound up his Superbike career, and the 2008 FIM Superbike World Championship, with a spectacular double win in the final round at the Portimao circuit in Portugal in front of 91,000 spectators. The first race was totally dominated by Bayliss, who powered into the lead at the start and was never seen again. The triple world champion’s margin over his pursuers was just over two seconds at the flag but it had been much wider throughout the race. There was a terrific scrap for the remaining podium places, the right choice of Pirelli tyre making all the difference and in the end it was Checa who came on strong to take the runner-up slot from Corser. The outcome for fourth place was also uncertain until the flag, and it eventually went to Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), making his WSBK debut. Fonsi Nieto (Suzuki Alstare) recovered well to finish fifth, ahead of another Spaniard, Gregorio Lavilla (VentAxia Honda) and Leon Haslam (HM Plant Honda). Max Neukirchner (Alstare Suzuki) crashed out while trying to reach the leading group, while Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) and Max Biaggi (Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati) both retired a few corners in after a clash.

Disaster For Xavi!
05 August 2008
The seventh round of this year’s Superstock 1000 FIM Cup will be one to forget for Xavi and Team Alstare Suzuki. Xavi had hoped to maintain his title challenge and put pressure on Maxime Berger (Honda) and Brendan Roberts (Ducati) but was sidelined even before the first lap of the race! On his inspection lap, Xavi’s bike suffered a fuel problem and the bike spluttered to a halt on the track. Xavi asked the cornerworkers to get the bike back to the pits, so that the problem could be rectified but the cornerworkers would not arrange for the bike to be transported back and so Xavi was unable to line up on the grid for the race. Berger won the race, with Morais (Kawasaki) second, Antonelli third (Honda) and Roberts fourth and Xavi is now third in the title standings, fourteen points behind Berger and Roberts.

KTM Superstock Riders in Points at Brands
04 August 2008
KTM and Team KTM Maehr Superstock celebrated their best ever race weekend at the tradition-rich, 3.703 km British racing circuit of Brands Hatch with both riders Rene Maehr and newcomer Pauli Pekkanen finishing in the points. Rene Maehr crossed the line in thirteenth place while his new Finnish team-mate Pekkanen came in at fourteenth in a race run in very difficult conditions. Rain just before the race made the choice of tyres tricky and vital, a situation further complicated as the track dried out in the final stages. Maehr opted for intermediates while Pekkanen decided on an intermediate for the rear tyre and a wet tyre for the front, a choice that meant the Finnish rider lost some ground in the closing stages of the race.

Front Row for Xavi!
03 August 2008
Team Alstare Suzuki rider Xavi Simeon set the fourth quickest lap of final qualifying today and will start on the front row of the grid in tomorrow’s 14-lap race. In the afternoon qualifying Xavi took a tumble and banged his right ankle. He was taken to the Clinica Mobile, but no breaks were revealed, though his ankle was heavily swollen. But Xavi is determined to race tomorrow and will be going all-out for a podium. Frenchman Maxime Berger (Honda) took pole position, with a lap of 1:28.879. Second Michele Pirro (Yamaha), with Brendan Roberts (Ducati) third.

Japanese Trio Hit the Front in SBK Qualifying at Brands
02 August 2008
A trio of Japanese riders hit the front in the first qualifying session for round 10 of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship at Brands Hatch, with two-times British Superbike champion Ryuichi Kiyonari clocking a time of 1 minute 26.017 seconds to take provisional pole. The Hannspree Ten Kate Honda man, who also won the Suzuka 8 Hours a few days ago, was just a fraction ahead of his fellow countryman Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB), second quickest today despite a late trip into the gravel. Suzuki Alstare’s Yukio Kagayama set a similar time to Haga to grab the third slot, while Italian Max Biaggi (Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati) was a further fraction of a second behind to complete the provisional front row.

Haga & Corser Ready for More Brands Success
30 July 2008
Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team) are no strangers to the podium in the World Superbike Championship, Corser having taken 122 career top three finishes and Haga 82. As their winning records show, each of Yamaha's lead 2008 season riders has a special affinity with Brands Hatch, having scored seven race wins between them at the sinuous and flowing English circuit. Corser is sitting in overall third in the points' standings after a Brno race weekend that placed him second and then fourth. Corser's pre-Brands confidence is boosted by the fact that he is currently only 12 points behind the second place rider, Max Neukirchner.

Strong Second for Roberts
21 July 2008
Brendan Roberts now leads the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup by one single point after a stunning ride at Brno in the Czech Republic, finishing second in the 12-lap race behind Max Berger. Roberts riding the 1098R for the Ducati Xerox Junior Team rode an extremely thoughtful race to take a confident second place, 0.05 in front of Alessandro Polita. Roberts who qualified on pole position on the Ducati was eager to secure a strong result at round six of the fiercely fought out series. Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) bounced back to the winner’s podium after a gap of eight races with a dominant double victory at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic. The points leader took his seventh and eighth wins of the season in front of 63,000 spectators, and this was the fifteenth time the Australian has picked up the ‘double’. FGSport & Pirelli to Renew Tyre Supply Contract
18 July 2008
FGSport is pleased to announce that Pirelli will be the official tyre supplier for the FIM Superbike World Championship for a further three years after the conclusion of the current contract, therefore until the end of 2012. The supply, as already envisaged in the current agreement, will include the FIM Supersport World Championship, the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and the UEM Superstock 600 European Championship. Pirelli’s working method, the undisputed reliability of the tyres, which have never caused any incidents or recorded any breakages, together with the absolute quality of the service provided were all determining factors in analysing the conditions for the renewal. Undoubtedly they were also a difficult obstacle to overcome for the competitors, who were required by the public supply tender to guarantee the same level of service that Pirelli has shown it is able to offer in this particular field.

Fourth for Roberts in Misano
03 July 2008
Despite a serious groin injury, which required five stitches, Brendan Roberts fought through the pain barrier to finish fourth in the FIM 1000 Superstock Cup round at Misano at the weekend. The young Australian crashed heavily during free practice on Friday morning and sustained injuries, which required stitches on Saturday evening. Not letting this trouble him too much Roberts still managed to qualify in fourth position on the grid for the 14-lap race. Using the same gearing he used at Nurbergring a couple of weeks ago Roberts was unable to get the Ducati 1098 R off the line and fell back to seventh place after the opening lap. Avoiding the melee of first lap incidents he soon got his head down and was working his way back through the field. Eager to narrow the margin between him and Championship leader Simeon, who was also riding injured. Roberts knew that he had to finish ahead of his nearest rival.

Hot Superstock Race for Team KTM Maehr in Misano
01 July 2008
The fifth from ten races in the FIM Superstock 1000 World Cup ended better than the twenty-fifth place than the 14-lap reflected for the young Austrian René Maehr and his two cylinder KTM 1190 RC 8. Maehr had already found a good basic chassis setup for his KTM in the first training session on the 4.18 km long, very curvy racing circuit on the Adriatic, even in temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius. And in the hot Italian summer temperatures the 21-year-old student was able to reduce his training time in the decisive last session on Saturday by a second. With the real aim of gathering important experience with the newly launched RC8 in very tough racing conditions, Maehr went into the heat of the Superstock battle at twenty eighth of 40 riders.

Broken Collarbone Fails to Stop Xavi
01 July 2008
Not even a broken left collarbone could deter Team Alstare Suzuki rider Xavi Simeon’s title challenge in the fourth round of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup at Misano today. The young Belgian was obviously in pain during the 14-lap race, but somehow he managed to take a superb fifth place and maintain his position at the top of the points standings. Alessandro Polita (Ducati) won the race, with Michele Pirro (Yamaha) second and Maxime Berger (Honda) third.

Pirro Pecond at Misano
30 June 2008
Michele Pirro (Yamaha Lorenzini by Leoni) remains the top Yamaha YZF-R1 rider in the championship after a fine second place at his home round in Misano. He sits on 63 points, 21 points from leader Xavier Simeon. Race winner Alessandro Polita is only four points up on Pirro, who led the first lap and was always in contention for the podium places over all 14 laps. Claudio Corti (Yamaha Motor Italia Junior Team) was unable to match his set-up to the Misano circuit and thus finished 12th in the race, and is now 10th in the championship.

Misano Cauldron Awaits World Superbike Contenders
26 June 2008
The action in the 2008 HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship is undoubtedly set to heat up this weekend as the runners and riders head for the Misano World Circuit cauldron on Italy’s Adriatic Riviera coast for Round 8, the San Marino Round organized in collaboration with the motorcycling federation of the tiny, Italian-speaking but independent, Republic state. With 7 rounds done and dusted, the season now enters its second half and the revised Santamonica circuit could not be a better place for this next phase of the championship, with scorching weather expected at the holiday venue to liven up proceedings. The last two rounds have produced two double winners in Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) at Miller Motorsports Park and Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB) at the Nurburgring, but more to the point they have seen Troy Bayliss’s leadership grip on a championship gradually come under threat.
