Gibernau Ends the Ducati Testing Session at Mugello

Sete Gibernau finished a two-days testing session he was taking part in at Mugello together with the Official Testers Vittoriano Guareschi and Niccola Canepa that will continue tomorrow for the final day. The Spanish rider, back in action for the third time after retiring almost two years ago, kept up an excellent pace, lapping consistently in around 1m50.5 with race tyre. Despite the difficult climatic conditions, with scorching air and track temperatures, Gibernau clocked an impressive fastest lap time in 1m48.9 with qualifying tyres. A crash around the end of the day, luckily without consequences, has nevertheless suggested to end the test early given the good job already made during two days.

Positive End to Three-Day Test in Mugello with Gibernau

The three-day test session at the Tuscan track of Mugello has concluded in a positive fashion for Sete Gibernau. The Spanish rider has clocked up a great deal of kilometres on track (around 800kms in total) first with the GP9, then with the GP8, finishing with a final exit on the GP9 for a back to back comparison. In this, only his second test session after nearly two years away from the tracks, Gibernau has proved that he still has the speed and is also more than competent in providing the Ducati Corse engineers with useful feedback for the development of the Desmosedici.

The third and final day of testing for Vittoriano Guareschi and Sete Gibernau concluded today at Mugello, with the Spaniard taking advantage of good weather conditions to clock up 50 laps and record a best time of 1'51.7. After two days of changeable weather today the sun finally stayed out and allowed the pair to get through the entire programme of work they had scheduled for the GP9.

A three-day session for the Ducati Test Team began today at Mugello, where factory test rider Vittoriano Guareschi was joined for the first time by Sete Gibernau. Gibernau clocked up twenty laps with the Desmosedici GP9, recording a best time of 1'53.7 before the session was interrupted by rain. Despite a long absence from the sport and the opportunity to complete only a handful of laps today, the Spaniard's first contact with the GP9 was a positive one.

Rossi Takes First Bridgestone Pole of Season

Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi has secured his and Bridgestone’s first pole position of the 2008 season after an action-packed qualifying session in Mugello this afternoon. Rossi’s time of 1m48.130s represents an eight-tenths-of-a-second improvement over the existing Mugello pole position record, set by Sete Gibernau on Bridgestone tyre back in 2006. It becomes the third consecutive pole position for a Bridgestone-shod rider at Mugello after Gibernau and Casey Stoner, who took pole in the rain-hit qualifying last year.

The small operation the Spanish rider underwent yesterday went according to plan but Gibernau will not be able to take part in the final race of the season. In last Sunday's crash at the Grande Premio de Portugal, Ducati Marlboro Team rider Sete Gibernau fractured the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand and again damaged the collarbone he had already fractured in June.

The Ducati MotoGP team's Spanish rider Sete Gibernau is to undergo further special medical treatment in an attempt to recover from his injuries as soon as possible. Following first medical checks on Gibernau yesterday in the Clinica Mobile as a result of his crash during the Estoril race, the Spanish rider left Portugal to undergo a further medical visit. This visit confirmed the fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand and damage to one of the plates previously inserted in his left collarbone.

The Ducati Marlboro Team was very much out of luck at Estoril today, Loris Capirossi struggling home in 12th position, Sete Gibernau knocked down by another rider. The pair were set for a challenging race anyway, Gibernau having qualified eighth quickest yesterday, Capirossi tenth. Both men made great starts, Capirossi completing the first lap in sixth place, just ahead of Gibernau, but that was as good as it got. On lap two Casey Stoner crashed at Turn Four, right in front of Gibernau, who couldn't avoid Stoner's fallen bike, careering over the top of the machine and landing heavily.

In warm, windy conditions Gibernau was just 0.5 seconds off ‘pole' and believes he can go quicker tomorrow if he can find more edge grip to improve his corner speed.
