National Motorcycle Week – Ride 2 Work - Ace Cafe

Today, as most will know is the National Motorcycle Week’s Ride 2 Work day and is designed to encourage motorcycle and scooter owners to ride to work, and if they can, take a friend, colleague or family member with them. This week’s worth of events is setup and organised by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA). The aim of the day is to highlight that motorcycling cuts congestion, pollution, and journey times and is convenient and flexible.

Road Camera Income Should Finance National Collision Investigation Board

Britain needs a national collision investigation board in order to deliver better road safety and monitor the success of costly programmes like the current THINK! campaign. That is the powerful conclusion reached in a paper produced by senior Sussex police officer Inspector Simon Labbett who made good use of a grant from the charitable arm of GEM Motoring Assist (formerly the Guild of Experienced Motorists) to study accident investigation techniques in the USA.

Tour European Capitals By Motorbike Project

THINK! Road Safety Signs Up For Fourth Year Of Bennetts BSB Championship

Day Time Running Lights - Idea Dims

Europe’s enthusiasm for imposing Daytime Running Lights (DRL) for all vehicles has dimmed somewhat, says the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) the UK’s most active riders rights group. Following responses to a consultation from the European Commission on DRLs, the Head of the European Commission’s Road Safety Unit, Dr Stefan Tostmann, announced at a recent meeting with FEMA (Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations) representatives that the Commission would call for a 6 month deferral in the United Nations legislative process.

Government Tackles Road Safety And Disadvantage

The Government announced that it has met its target to reduce road casualties in disadvantaged areas. Since the target was set, road casualties in the 88 most deprived districts in England have fallen by 19% beside a fall of 15% for England as a whole. The target was introduced in 2002 as part of the Government's response following research which showed that children from the poorest communities are up to five times more likely to be involved in road accidents than some of their better off peers.

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) announces its summer media awards for motorcycle safety awareness videos. The categories range from the Golden “Oscars” to the “Raspberry” Award. The Raspberry Award goes to the latest Transport for London (TfL) video and campaign “The Day You Went To Work” or as stated by the narrator “The legs you’ll never use again”.

Melting Roads Surfaces – Riders Take Care

The Motorcycle Action Group has re issued its 2005 press release regarding the use of crushed rock dust in this year’s heat wave by councils to combat the problem of melting road surfaces. In the summer of 2005 the Motorcycle Action Group was made aware that some of the country's roads were beginning to melt due to a heat wave and that in parts of County Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland councils had been sending out gritting lorries to spread crushed rock dust in an attempt to combat the problem.

Motorcycle Industry Targets Young Road User Safety

As the countdown to a brand new Grand Prix motorcycle racing season fast approaches, it has been announced that BMW is to continue its support for this exciting sport by confirming its status as official safety car supplier for the MotoGP World Championship series until 2009. For the past seven years, BMW has enjoyed a collaborative agreement in being the sole manufacturer responsible for providing a range of exclusive safety cars throughout each MotoGP season. And now this support is set to continue throughout the 17-round 2006 series and beyond.

MAG Push for Rider Safety

The Motorcycle Action Group are delighted that the Department of Transport has finally recognised that the thickness of many modern cars' "A" pillars poses a big safety issue. For some time now, MAG has been arguing this point for some years now and resisted efforts to make bikers wear fluorescent clothing and burn headlights in daytime. MAG has long considered the conspicuity of the rider to be a "red herring" which distracts attention from the real causes of accidents.

‘Act Your Age' Says Motor Cycle Industry's DVD

Following on from the success of the DVD A Street, A Track, An Open Road which was launched last year to promote safer riding, MCI has finished a new project to produce a DVD designed specifically for scooter owners with younger riders and commuters in mind. Act Your Age, is an educational DVD aimed at young people and commuters who are scooter and moped riders or who are considering getting on two-wheels. It is also a valuable tool for any young person to help them find out more about safety on the roads and how to deal with vulnerable road users. The MCI worked with the Metropolitan Film School, Remote Productions and has developed links Road Safety Officers. MCI is producing an accessible product, with the title ‘Act Your Age’ and Road Safety Officers will be supporting the distribution across eleven London boroughs.

Another Safety First from Honda. THE MOTORCYCLE TRAINER

Honda has committed to getting its new Motorcycle Rider Trainer in every dealership within the next three years. The aim of Honda's Motorcycle Riding Trainer is similar to that of a flight simulator. For years these have been used in aviation to train and test pilots in complete safety, teaching them what to do in emergency situations so that when it happens for real, they instinctively know what to do.
