Ben Wilson – Boston Bike Night

Ben Wilson attended the well-supported Boston Bike Night on Thursday where he had his Henderson Yamaha R1 Cup bike and also his own Yamaha R1 National Superstock bike on display. The Boston rider was inundated with fans all wanting to get a close-up view of the racing bikes and Ben was on hand to answer the many questions that were put to him during the evening.

Riders Get To Grips With Manhole Covers

Carriageway manhole covers, especially on bends, can present a potentially lethal danger to motorcyclists but this could all change if revisions to the European Standard for them, proposed by the UK, is agreed. It is well known that over time some manhole cover surfaces become smooth and polished and if wet, very slippery, but thanks to the work undertaken by the National Motorcycle Council i.e. The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF), Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers (IHIE), Motor Cycle Industry Association MCIA, Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) RAC Foundation and Devon County Council, the UK committee working on the revision of European Standard EN124 have agreed unanimously to recommend a minimum ‘polished skid resistance value for manhole covers’.

Britain’s Favourite Biking Routes Revealed

It’s official. Motorbike fans across the country have voted Scotland’s Glen Coe and the A82 as Britain’s favourite scenic biking route in a survey of over 1,500 bikers recently conducted by DVLA Personalised Registrations. Bealach na Ba, situated just off the A696, and the stunning surroundings of the Heights of Kinlochewe found along the A832, were noted as bikers’ second and third most popular routes, positioning Scotland as home to the nation’s top three bike vistas.

£371million A3 Improvements Will Go Ahead

Much needed improvements to the A3 trunk road at Hindhead, Surrey, will go ahead Stephen Ladyman, Transport Minister, confirmed today. The Government is committing £371m to improve the last remaining single carriageway section of the A3, between South West London and Portsmouth, to a dual carriageway. This includes the construction of a twin bore tunnel under the Devil's Punch Bowl Site of Special Scientific Interest to minimise any negative impacts on the environment, as well as major landscape restoration following the closure of the old A3.

Britain’s Favourite Biking Routes To Be Revealed At NEC

Britain’s favourite scenic motorbike routes as voted for by bikers themselves will be revealed by DVLA Personalised Registrations at this year’s International Motorcycle and Scooter Show, taking place at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre between October 27th and November 5th.

Ladyman Announces Changes To Dartford Charges

Plans for a new system of charges, which will incentivise the use of time saving electronic tags over the Dartford Crossing, have been announced today by Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman. A consultation to be launched in December will propose scrapping night time charges and increasing day time charges for cash paying motorists. Users would receive a significant discount on the cash rate if they opt to pay using a "Dart Tag".

Melting Roads Surfaces – Riders Take Care

The Motorcycle Action Group has re issued its 2005 press release regarding the use of crushed rock dust in this year’s heat wave by councils to combat the problem of melting road surfaces. In the summer of 2005 the Motorcycle Action Group was made aware that some of the country's roads were beginning to melt due to a heat wave and that in parts of County Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland councils had been sending out gritting lorries to spread crushed rock dust in an attempt to combat the problem.

Department for Transport Accept Proposed A3 Tunnel Under Devil's Punchbowl.

The Secretary of State for Transport, and for Communities and Local Government, and for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, have today published their joint decision that they are "minded to" accept the Inspector's recommendations in favour of the published scheme for the construction of a tunnel to carry the A3 under the Devil's Punchbowl at Hindhead in Surrey.

Transport Programme For South East Region

Travellers and businesses across the South East Region will benefit from a programme of transport improvements to tackle congestion, improve safety and invest in public transport, the Government announced today when it responded to regional advice about the transport priorities for the region. In July 2005, the Government asked the Regional Assembly, the Regional Development Agency and other partners for its advice on transport priorities for the £1.522 billion it has provisionally allocated for transport investment in the region up to 2015/16.

Road Maintenance Underfunding Threat To Drivers' Safety

About four in five local authorities in England believe there is a threat to drivers' safety due to road maintenance underfunding, a survey out today showed. London local authorities' road maintenance shortfall is £60 million, while the shortfall for English local authorities excluding London is £1.64 billion.
