Day of Champions Opens MotoGP's Donington Weekend

The ambience was steadily building on Thursday for the eighth race weekend of the 2008 World Championship, with MotoGP arriving in England at a cloudy Donington Park. Despite the typically cool weather conditions it was an exciting day at the circuit in the heart of England, with a busy ‘Day of Champions’ agenda ahead of the bwin.com British Grand Prix. nAs he will hope to be throughout the weekend, home rider James Toseland has been one of the main protagonists as the MotoGP community and British racing fans gathered for a series of activities to raise money for Riders for Health, the official charity of the World Championship.

Capirossi Out, Spies in for Donington!

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP will give reigning American Superbike Champion Ben Spies his MotoGP debut at next weekend’s British Grand Prix, following confirmation that Loris Capirossi will be unfit for the Donington race. The 23-year-old American from Longview in Texas was due to make his Rizla Suzuki MotoGP debut as a wildcard rider at next month’s USGP in California, but he has been drafted in early to replace Capirossi who suffered a broken right hand at Catalunya last weekend. Capirossi is now targeting a return at the following weekend’s race at Assen in The Netherlands and will continue to work on his fitness to try and achieve this goal. Chris Vermeulen will be returning to the scene of one of his podium successes in 2007 when he takes to the track at the 4,023m long Donington Park circuit. Suzuki’s Australian star finished third in wet weather conditions at the British venue last year and will be looking to continue with the improvement in form that both he and the Suzuki GSV-R have shown in recent races.

Honda Gears Up for BladeDay2

Honda and motorcycle fans across the UK are gearing up for Bladeday2, a unique motorcycling event at Donington Park on Friday 23rd May, to celebrate sixteen years of the Fireblade – the bike universally known to capture the very essence of sports motorcycling. The anticipated 5,000 ’Blade and motorcycling enthusiast visitors to the event can expect an action packed day of entertainment for just £10 entry fee on the day (under 16s free), but remember to bring cash as no card payment facilities will be available at the event. Gates at the Melbourne Entrance open at 9.00am with the event, located on the Launch Pad site, ending at 5.00pm.

Chris Pfeiffer At Goodwood This Summer

The 37-year-old German stunt-rider is the current Indoor Freestyle World Champion and was the 2006 Stunt Wars winner in Florida USA. Chris will be giving sensational displays of his trick riding skills at the Day of Champions at Donington Park on Thursday 21 June, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Hampshire from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 June. The Day of Champions is the annual fund-raiser for the Riders for Health charity, which trains African health workers to ride and maintain motorcycles so they can reach remote rural communities with vital healthcare. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a hillclimb event which is quite possibly the biggest and most diverse celebration of two and four-wheeled motorsport in the world, both perfect venues for Chris to perform his spectacular show.

Get On Track And Help Save Lives In Africa

Racedays are holding a new fundraising event at Ascari, Spain, with all the profits going to Riders for Health. The exclusive trackday event will be held at the Ascari Race Resort, near Malaga, on the 27th and 28th of March. GP500 legend Randy Mamola, MotoGP's Jeremy McWilliams, World Superbike's Dean Ellison, World Supersport's Iain Macpherson and Isle of Man TT heroine Maria Costello will all be providing instruction to riders over the two days.

Shinya Nakano Makes Riders For Health Donation

Konica MinoltaHonda rider Shinya Nakano took time out from his testing schedule today to make a personal donation to MotoGP’s favourite charity – Riders for Health. The 29-year-old Japanese racer handed a cheque to Randy Mamola for 5000 Euros for the UK-based organisation. Shinya said: “Every year I like to do something for charity and Riders for Health is the motorcycle racers’ favourite charity. Every year I do the Day of Champions day at Donington Park, but this year I wanted to do something extra, which is why I made this donation. I think it’s so important what Riders for Health does, using motorcycles to help people less fortunate than ourselves.”

MIchael Hill & Riders for Health – ‘Dia De Campeones’

British 125cc racer Michael Hill continued his work for the riders for health charity at the Ricardo Tormo circuit on Thursday ahead of the final round of the Moto GP world championship. Having supported the charity since taking up the sport, Michael once again took to the stage (having previously hosted the main stage on the Friday and Saturday at this years British Moto GP) joining resident Spanish host Cesc Vila for a day in which Spanish fans helped Riders for Health raise in excess of 70,000 euros.

Corser Meets The Princess Royal

Reigning World Superbike Champion Troy Corser met HRH Princess Anne at the 10th anniversary reception of charity organisation Riders for Health at the Hurlingham Club in London this week. The Princess Royal, who is the charity’s patron, spoke with the Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra rider, former Superbike Champion James Toseland and industry supporters.

Yamaha UK Support ‘Feeder’ Drummer In Riders For Health ‘EnduroAfrica’

Yamaha UK are pleased to be able to help Mark Richardson, the drummer from rock group Feeder, in his quest to raise money for Riders for Health via his entry in their fundraising event; Enduro Africa. Mark spent the weekend at Donington Park at the MotoGP and rode his loan Yamaha FZ1 as part of the ride-in and round the circuit on Day of Champions, to help raise awareness of the charity and its various activities.

Two or three times a year, the MotoGP paddock is disrupted by Day of Champions, Dia de los Campeones or some other event to raise money for Riders. Teams, riders and organisers give up valuable time from the hectic schedules for a vital cause. Riders for Health was founded back in 1989 by a group of people from the Grand Prix paddock, including Randy Mamola, Kenny Roberts, Andrea Coleman and Barry Coleman. It is now the charity officially supported by Dorna, the FIM, a number of teams ranging from Ducati to Team KR, and circuits like Donington Park, Sachsenring, Catalunya and Valencia.

Riders For Health Day Of Champions '06' - Thursday 29th June

Day of Champions is unique. There is no other day like it, anywhere in the world, in any sport. It is Riders for Health's main fundraising day, held at Donington Park, and over the years has become one of the largest outdoor fundraisers in the UK. All the money raised goes directly to support Riders for Health's pioneering work, enabling health workers to carry on riding motorcycles over tough rural terrain to reach people in need of vital health care.

Mackenzie leads ride-in on Day of Champions

Rizla Suzuki’s British Superbike Race Operations Manager Niall Mackenzie will lead the ride-in at this year’s Riders for Health Day of Champions at Donington Park on Thursday, June 29th. The ride-in from Coalville is always one of the highlights of the annual Day of Champions and this year looks set to be no different with 200 bikes taking part. The ride will start at the Victoria Pub in Coalville, registration opens at 09.00, followed by breakfast.
