3 Days ago | 1 Comment
Paul Bird Motorsport rider Gregorio Lavilla bounced back to form with a superb eighth place finish in the opening leg of today's Hannspree World Superbike Championship held in the heat of the Italian Adriatic coast at Misano. Aboard the Vent Axia VK Honda, qualifying had not gone according to plan for the team as Lavilla missed out on Superpole and was placed 19th on the grid, making for a fifth row start but in the opening leg, the Spaniard got a good start and pushed hard into the first three corners to come out of the first lap in 13th position.

More Points for Lavilla in Germany
16 June 2008 | 2 Comments
Despite missing out on Superpole qualification, Paul Bird Motorsport Vent Axia VK Honda rider Gregorio Lavilla added to his World Superbike Championship points tally at the Nurburgring in Germany yesterday. The first race of the day was delayed because of a sudden rain shower just as the grid was starting to form up. After a delay of around twenty minutes, Lavilla made good progress into the second corner but he was struck by another rider and he fell, unable to restart, meaning his 100% finishing record was ended.

Checa’s Double Win Leaves All to Play for at Nurburgring
11 June 2008
The double win by Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) in Round 6 of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship two weeks ago at Miller Motorsports Park in the USA succeeded in shuffling the cards in the points standings somewhat as the series reaches the mid-point of the season. With Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) failing to score in both races, the Spaniard has now cut the gap to the top man to just 28 points. What seemed a healthy points cushion for the Australian just a couple of races ago, is now not such a large gap after all, proving that anything can happen in the unpredictable world of Superbike racing. The second new circuit in the space of two weeks is the Nurburgring, which has not hosted a round of the Superbike World Championship since 1999, when the German Round made its second and last visit after the first event in 1998. Four riders in the current world championship line-up have raced Superbike there before – Troy Corser, Noriyuki Haga, Ruben Xaus and Gregorio Lavilla – with the Australian powering to a race 2 win in 1999, while Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi have raced in 500 and 250 respectively and Max Neukirchner in the German championship. Almost one decade has passed since then and this weekend’s Nurburgring race is sure to throw up a few surprises.

Lavilla Scores Points But Leaves America Disappointed
03 June 2008 | 2 Comments
Continuing his unique and impressive record of scoring in every race so far this season in the Hannspree World Superbike Championship, Vent Axia VK Motorsport rider Gregorio Lavilla scored a 13th and a 15th place finish at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City in Utah, USA yesterday.

Handicapped by a qualifying position of 23rd place, the 34 year old Spaniard took to the grid and in the first race of the day, started late and shortened to twenty laps after there was a grid slot mix up, Lavilla battled through to 13th, despite never finding a good set-up for his 2008 Fireblade throughout qualifying.

Quay Garage Racing Seek New Rider for BSB Cup
16 May 2008
Q8Oils-supported Quay Garage Racing are in talks with some high profile riders to replace James Buckingham, following the 23-year old’s brave decision to step back from racing. James has a long association with the North Devon team, having won the British Superbike ‘privateers cup’ with them in 2005. However he has been dogged by injury problems since a massive crash at Oulton Park in 2006 that left him with two broken ankles and has struggled to return to his previous form. James’ ankle injury ruled him out of the 2006 season and he rode with a hole in his ankle bone that caused considerable pain during his 2007 campaign. He underwent a bone graft operation at the end of the year.

Top Ten For Lavilla at Monza
13 May 2008
Vent Axia VK Honda rider Gregorio Lavilla overcame a couple of problems to post a pair of points scoring results in round five of the World Superbike Championship held at Monza in Italy yesterday. The Paul Bird Motorsport rider squeezed into Superpole in sixteenth position and was hoping for a pair of solid points scoring finishes at the historic Italian circuit. In the opening race, the 36 year old Spaniard had clawed his way up to eighth and was looking set for a good result when the machine started to run out of fuel on the final lap and he had to eventually coast in to an eleventh place finish at the end of the first 18 lap race.

Bayliss Takes Healthy Points Margin to Monza
08 May 2008
Following his double victory at Assen, Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) will come to Monza for the IDS Italian Round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend with a healthy 70 point lead in the table over his closest rivals as the series reaches third distance. In eight races so far on his Ducati 1098 F08, the 39-year-old from Taree has taken the chequered flag on five occasions, finished second twice and has only been off the podium once, in race 2 at Losail. This sort of steamrolling form will guarantee Bayliss an ample cushion from his 178 points in the next few races should a challenge be mounted by the chasing four-cylinder contenders.

Solid Points at Assen for Lavilla
28 April 2008
Paul Bird Motorsport rider Gregorio Lavilla moved inside the top ten of the World Superbike Championship following a pair of great results in rounds seven and eight held at Assen in Holland today. Riding the Vent Axia and Kick Energy drink-backed Honda Fireblade, the 34 year old Spaniard posted fifteenth fastest time during the Superpole qualifying session and in the opening race, he battled against a poor start to come from twentieth on the opening lap to record a ninth position.

Double Dutch Delight for Bayliss at Assen
28 April 2008
Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) powered to his second double of the year with two convincing wins at the Assen TT Circuit in the Netherlands in the fourth round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship front of 75,000 spectators. Bayliss powered to his fifth win at Assen in the opening race after a mistake by early leader Kagayama (Alstare Suzuki) on lap 12 left him with a gap at the chicane. The Australian then increased his lead over the following riders in the final laps to win by a margin of 2 seconds. Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) took the runner-up slot, in a sprint to the finish with Max Neukirchner (Suzuki Alstare). Kagayama took fourth from Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB), both riders holding off a late charge by Jakub Smrz (Ducati Guandalini).

SBK Heads to Classic Dutch TT Circuit for Round 4 of 14
23 April 2008
The classic Dutch TT circuit at Assen plays host to the fourth round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend, after a gap of three weeks from the Spanish Round. With two second places at Valencia, Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) increased his lead over his closest rivals to 48 points but the Australian is now coming under threat from a number of adversaries, mainly on four-cylinder machines. Regulation-wise, there will be no extra handicap applied to the twin-cylinder 1200s for the next three rounds, as the event average difference between the two types of machines – twins and fours - has so far proved to be insufficient to warrant a change.

Best Yet For Lavilla At Valencia
07 April 2008
Paul Bird Motorsport rider Gregorio Lavilla got to ride his 2008 Vent Axia VK Honda Fireblade in anger for the first time this weekend at the World Superbike Championship round in Valencia and set an immediate season best of seventh in race one. The Spanish rider followed that up with eleventh in race two, and he now sits eleventh overall in the championship, with 32 points. He is the second highest Honda rider in the rankings, two points ahead of his old BSB rival Ryuichi Kiyonari, and has scored in every race so far.

Lavilla In The Points In Qatar
25 February 2008
Paul Bird Motorsport rider Gregorio Lavilla got his World Superbike Championship challenge underway with two points scoring finishes at the Losail circuit in Qatar today. Riding the 2007 specification Vent Axia VK Honda Fireblade the Spanish rider posted a 13th place finish in race one, and followed it up with 14th in race two, despite suffering some lurid front end slides when he tried to push hard. The high winds in qualifying made finding a useable set up difficult, and that problem continued as raceday dawned relatively still, requiring some last minute changes to the machine.

Double Win For Lavilla
14 October 2007 | 2 Comments
Gregorio Lavilla took a brilliant double victory in the final round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch today. Leon Haslam completed the season with a 4th and 5th place finish. In an exciting first race Greg was in 3rd position when the safety car was introduced for 3 laps. Following the restart he soon moved into the lead before pulling away to take the chequered flag and his first win of the day. Leon was challenging for the podium places for much of the 30 lap race but was unable to overtake Kiyonari and finished 4th.

Kiyonari Retains The Title
14 October 2007 | 1 Comment
Ryuichi Kiyonari arrived at Brands Hatch knowing that a top four finish in the opening race of the final round would be sufficient for him to retain the Bennetts British Superbike title he had clinched a year earlier in the corresponding round. It might have seemed a formality for the 25 year old HM Plant Honda rider who had qualified fifth fastest, but, who was quickly away at the start to be running second in the early stages to his team-mate, and title outsider Jonathan Rea.
