Stoner Starts 2008 In Style With Qatar Win

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner began his title defence in characteristic style with an impressive victory in Qatar on Sunday aboard his Bridgestone-shod Ducati. The win gives Stoner an eleventh MotoGP career victory and takes to twenty-one the total number of Bridgestone-shod wins in MotoGP. It was also the third season in a row that a Bridgestone-shod Ducati rider has taken the first win of the year. Stoner’s victory was another sublime performance in spite of challenging night-time track conditions at the Losail International Circuit which have made for a difficult weekend for Bridgestone.

Toseland Shines Bright In MotoGP Debut

James Toseland kicked off his MotoGP career in superb style tonight, the British rider claiming a well deserved top six finish in the historic first night race in Qatar. Brimming with confidence after he secured a maiden front row grid position yesterday, the 27-year-old showed no signs of any first race nerves with a flying start. Third at the end of a hectic lap one, he then climbed into second on lap two with a daring overtake on Jorge Lorenzo.

Unexpected Struggle Leaves Rossi 5th In Qatar Opener

The opening race of the MotoGP season and the championship’s first night race saw Fiat Yamaha Team rider Valentino Rossi finish a disappointed fifth tonight, after struggling for pace on the cold track throughout the 22 lap race. Fiat Yamaha Team rider Jorge Lorenzo sealed a weekend to remember in Qatar at the first ever MotoGP night race by finishing second on an impressive premier-class debut. The reigning double 250cc World Champion started from pole for the fifth consecutive year at this track, following three 250cc and one 125cc pole, and proved he will be a force to reckon with in 2008 with a mature ride to the runner-up spot behind Casey Stoner. Lorenzo’s team-mate Valentino Rossi finished fifth after starting from seventh on the grid.

Three Michelin Men In Top Four In Historic Night Race

Michelin riders packed the front-running positions in tonight’s historic Qatar night race, with three Michelin men in the top four and all Michelin riders in the top ten at the end of a record-breaking race. The 22-lap event smashed the Qatar race record by almost half a minute with the top seven riders all inside last year’s record pace, thanks in part to the cool night-time conditions which help engines run stronger and tyres run cooler.

First Race & Firsts Points For The Alice Team

Alice Team Riders, Toni Elias and Sylvain Guintoli, have conquered the firsts world championship points in the first race of the MotoGP season on the Losail International circuit in Qatar. The first World Championship historical nocturnal race, hasn’t be so lucky for the French-Hispanic duo, as both riders found some complications during the race. The Spanish rider (Elias) has meet some difficulties straight away since the first laps he was going slower compared to the time registered during warm up.

Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa rode a superb race to take a hard-fought third-place finish in tonight’s Qatar Grand Prix while team-mate Nicky Hayden took tenth place. The opening round of the 2008 World Championship made history as the first night-time GP in six decades of GP racing, the 5.38km/3.43 mile Losail circuit illuminated by a 5.4 million watt lighting rig.

Dovizioso Finishes An exciting 4th In First 2008 Race!

Andrea Dovizioso attacked the Losail circuit tonight and took fourth place in an amazing race, in which he was always attacking. The 21-year-old Italian started in 9th position on the third row but always wanted to get to the front of the fight. Andrea battled hard in the final part of the race and eventually took fourth place following a very hard ride in the Losail darkness. After the previous sessions of the preceding days which didn’t show our rider’s value; the team found a technical configuration for the race which gave the JiR Team Scot rider a fast lap just 0.37 sec from the best at the circuit recorded in 2007. Tonight at Losail was a fantastic race for ‘The Silver Arrow’ now we look forward to Jerez.

Capirossi Battles To Eighth In Qatar

Loris Capirossi marked his debut with the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team by claiming a hard-earned eighth position at the first race of the season in Qatar. Starting from 13th on the grid, Capirossi fought his way through the field to eighth on lap five, maintaining that position for the rest of the 22-lap race. Capirossi came under heavy pressure in the final laps from Randy de Puniet, but the 34-year-old Italian used all his experience to fight off the challenge and preserve his place.

Casey Stoner savoured the Australian national anthem with his eyes firmly closed under the bright lights of Qatar after taking victory in the first night race in the history of the sport. The MotoGP World Champion started the defence of his title from fourth on the grid and had dropped to fifth by the end of the first lap, before charging through to set up a stirring battle with Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo Spanish rookie proved to be the most difficult obstacle between Stoner and his eleventh career MotoGP win but by the eighth lap Stoner was in control and little by little he opened out an insurmountable gap.

De Puniet Battles To Second Row

The curtain-raising hour of final qualifying here under the floodlights at Losail proved that the established order of rank, at least this far, has changed. Newcomer to the class Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) grabbed pole at his first premier class Grand Prix. British star James Toseland, who held onto pole for much of the hour-long session, lines up second on the grid and Colin Edwards (both Yamaha) completes the front row. This stint was a struggle for the leading Honda men – but they did not buckle under early season pressure from the opposition.

Fiat Yamaha Team new recruit Jorge Lorenzo, at 20 the youngest rider on the grid, took an incredible pole position on his MotoGP debut in Qatar tonight. The Spanish rookie is the first rider in ten years to take pole position at his debut premier-class race and heads the first all-Yamaha front row since Sachsenring in 2002. Following on from an impressive opening night yesterday, Lorenzo continued with more of the same in the first session this evening and finished second. As a result he headed into this evening’s Qualifying session as one of the clear favourites for a spot on the front row and, with 20 minutes to go, he slotted in a Michelin qualifying tyre and went straight to the top of the time sheets. It was a night for the rookies as pole position was briefly surrendered to fellow Yamaha new-boy James Toseland, but Lorenzo’s final qualifying lap was too good for his competitors and a time of 1’53.927 saw him smash the previous pole record by over a second.

Rossi Heads 3rd Row For Night-Time Qatar Showdown

Fiat Yamaha Team rider Valentino Rossi will start tomorrow’s season-opening MotoGP race from the front of the third row, after qualifying seventh under the Qatar floodlights tonight. The Italian lacked a little pace with his qualifying tyres this evening but a strong showing on Bridgestone race tyres in tonight’s first practice session left him feeling nonetheless relaxed for tomorrow’s race. After struggling slightly for grip yesterday the earlier practice session, run in slightly warmer temperatures, saw Rossi making significant improvements to his setting and finishing third fastest. Qualifying was something more of a struggle for the multiple world champion however and he was unable to break into the top positions, but he is confident that a good start and a strong first lap will see him in a position to fight with the protagonists in to morrow’s 22-lap race.

Gripping Stuff From Qatar Qualifying

The qualifying session for the first MotoGP round of 2008 took place tonight at Qatar's Losail International Circuit and it was not short on surprises. Rookies Jorge Lorenzo and James Toseland took pole and second position on the grid, while some older hands struggled to find form at the 5.38km desert track. But John Hopkins, riding the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR in his first race weekend for the squad, came over the line with the tenth fastest time of the session on the 21st of 23 laps. He was also the third highest placed Bridgestone rider, with only current world champion, Casey Stoner, and Valentino Rossi ahead of him on similar rubber.
