Team Joe Rocket Suzuki rider Shawn Giles kicked off his 2008 season with the overall win at the 2008 Superbike World Championship round at Phillip Island.

Walker 14th But Fujiwara Stops
02 March 2008
Chris Walker (GIL Kawasaki) rode his Ninja ZX-6R to 14th place at Phillip Island this weekend, in a delayed 21-lap race. Starting from the fourth row, Walker was involved in several midfield battles during the race, but made up two places on his qualifying position at the end of 21 laps. His team-mate Fujiwara was relegated from 15th on the grid to 21st place on lap one and he was forced out altogether on lap three, despite having high hopes for raceday after some late set-up changes.

Laconi Fast But Stopped In His Tracks
02 March 2008
Régis Laconi (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) looked set for a strong finish in race two at Phillip Island until he was penalised with a ride-through penalty for jump-starting. Both he and his team-mate Makoto Tamada had found improvements in the set-up of their Ninja ZX-10R machines during final qualifying and morning warm-up, with Tamada finishing 14th in race two. Neither rider managed to complete race one, each suffering the same form of technical problem with their electronics systems.

Corser Second In Race One As Haga Fights Hard
02 March 2008
Troy Corser went through one race of joy and endured one non-finish at the challenging Phillip Island circuit in Australia, taking a masterful second place in race one but falling out of contention for the podium places in race two. On his home track, Corser had to work hard with his Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team to find a good raceday set-up and he made adjustments between races to improve it still more, finding great gains until his race finished early.

Bayliss Takes The Double Win At Phillip Island
02 March 2008 | 2 Comments
An incredible day for the Ducati Xerox Team with both Bayliss and Fabrizio performing impeccably. Twice world-champion Troy Bayliss took the double win in front of his home crowd, in what is to be his last ever Superbike race day at Phillip Island. Despite the elbow injury he sustained in a high-side yesterday morning, Bayliss rode the two races perfectly, leading the field from the start in race one (restart) and leading for most of race two after rival Corser crashed out in the early stages.

Pitt Secures First Win For HANNspree Ten Kate Honda
02 March 2008
After an eventful first race at Qatar’s Losail circuit last week, HANNspree Ten Kate Honda rider Andrew Pitt was determined to show the competition he’s ready for battle and grabbed first place in a spectacular round of racing at his Phillip Island home circuit. It was a close fought battle at the front with Pitt and Brookes swapping places throughout most of the session. Pitt reclaimed the lead in the last lap, before Joshua Brookes and Robin Harms, who completed the successful day for title sponsor HANNspree. Jonathan Rea managed to put in a good performance finishing 6th despite the hand injury he sustained in last week’s Qatar crash.

Podium For Fonsi & Second In The Championship!
02 March 2008
Team Suzuki Alstare rider Fonsi Nieto took a fifth in the first race and followed that with a superb third in race two to move into second place in the championship behind Troy Bayliss (Ducati). Bayliss won both 22-lap races today at Phillip Island , with Troy Corser (Yamaha) second and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) third in race one and Carlos Checa second in race two. Team Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner finished seventh in race one and was in line for a podium in the second race, but bike set-up problems forced him down the order to fifth at the flag.

Pole Position & Third Place In Superpole For Xerox
02 March 2008
A fantastic result for Bayliss and Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) in Superpole today with Bayliss just snatching pole from fellow Australian Corser, breaking the lap record in the process, while team-mate Fabrizio secured third place on the grid. Two front row places on tomorrow's grid for the riders and their new 1098 F08 machine is a very satisfying result for the Ducati Xerox Team. Bayliss' performance was all the more impressive as after high-siding in this morning's qualifying session, a visit to the circuit's clinic resulted in him having eight stitches administered to his left elbow.

Checa On Front Row For HANNspree Ten Kate Honda
01 March 2008 | 1 Comment
Carlos Checa has secured his first front row start of the 2008 HANNspree Superbike World Championship at Phillip Island in Australia today. The HANNspree Ten Kate Honda rider is starting to get to grips with the all-new HANNspree Ten Kate Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade and will start from fourth position on the grid in tomorrow's race. The Spaniard set a Superpole lap of 1'32.373 to take his place alongside Troy Bayliss, Troy Corser and Michel Fabrizio.

Pole Position For HANNspree WSS
01 March 2008
HANNspree Ten Kate Honda's Andrew Pitt has secured his first pole position of the season at Phillip Island ahead of tomorrow's race. The Australian was dominant at his home track and posted a best time of 1'34.592 to seal the top spot. British team-mate Jonathan Rea will start from the second row in fifth position. It is a strong starting place for the World Supersport rookie who is still carrying an injury following an unfortunate accident during the opening race of the season at Qatar. The HANNspree Ten Kate Honda team is aiming to pick up vital points in tomorrow's race to kickstart the 2008 season for them.

Parkes & Foret Earn Front Row Starts
01 March 2008
A tense final qualifying session held under the warm Australian sun ended with both Fabien Foret and Broc Parkes able to start tomorrow's 21-lap World Supersport Championship race from the front row. Each rider had to push hard in the latter stages to set their best time of the weekend, with the Yamaha World Supersport Team's combined efforts putting both its riders on the front row for the first time this season. Foret and Parkes each found a lack of grip from the 4.445km Phillip Island track surface, despite having had a highly positive test in the winter months on their all-new Yamaha YZF-R6 machines.

Corser Starts Home Race From The First Row
01 March 2008
Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team) was only one place away from taking the Superpole win at his home track of Phillip Island, after qualifying second quickest in the regular official timed sessions and Superpole itself. On qualifying tyres he was half a second a second faster in Superpole than he had been on race tyres, posting a lap of 1'32.011. He did not get the chance to practice on a qualifying tyre, making his ultimate performance in Superpole all the more impressive.

Superpole - Round Two - Phillip Island
01 March 2008
Troy Bayliss grabbed his first Superpole of the year at the end of an eventful day for the 38-year-old Australian at Phillip Island. The Ducati Xerox rider crashed three minutes before the end of the morning Q2 session after setting the quickest time, earning himself eight stitches in his left elbow in the process, then he smashed the circuit record at the end of second free practice. Finally in Superpole he shaved a further three-tenths off that time to take the pole away from his fellow Aussie Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB), leaving the mark at 1 minute 31.493 seconds. Young Italian Michel Fabrizio was next up for the Ducati Xerox Team, edging out Carlos Checa (HANNspree Ten Kate Honda) for the final front row slot.

Fonsi & Max On The Second Row
01 March 2008
Both Fonsi Nieto and Max Neukirchner will start tomorrow’s pair of 22-lap races from the second row of the grid after slightly problematic Superpole laps. Both had high hopes of front row grid positions before the 16-rider shoot-out, and will now have to get good starts if they don’t want to lose touch with the leaders at the beginning of the two races. Aussie Troy Bayliss (Ducati) broke the lap record to take Superpole, beating fellow countryman Troy Corser (Yamaha) in the process. Third was Michel Fabrizio (Ducati), with Carlos Checa (Honda) completing the front row of the grid.

Parkes & Foret Both On Provisional Front Row
29 February 2008 | 1 Comment
Yamaha riders took two of the four places on the provisional front row at Phillip Island, after Fabien Foret and Broc Parkes (both Yamaha World Supersport Team) each set times less than a quarter of a second from provisional pole position man, Andrew Pitt. Parkes, competing at his home race only a week after winning the first round of the World Supersport Championship at Qatar, came closest to the top spot and was only 0.080 seconds from the fastest lap of the first qualifying session. Due to track surface and temperature changes, Parkes could not match the class-leading lap time of 1'34.6 seconds he set in winter testing. Despite not feeling able to push to the maximum right now, his best lap on the all-new Yamaha YZF-R6 today was just over half a second from the current official lap record of 1'34.976.

Corser On Provisional Pole At Home Circuit
29 February 2008
Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team) set the fastest lap on the first day at Phillip Island, posting a 1'32.366 lap time on his 17th out of 21 laps. Despite suffering bruising and a pain from two crashes in last week's opening SBK round, Noriyuki Haga battled to 13th today, finding his current suspension settings less than ideal for the ever-changing Phillip Island track surface.

2nd & 3rd Fastest Times For Bayliss & Fabrizio
29 February 2008
The Ducati Xerox Team is more than satisfied with the way the weekend has begun at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, with Bayliss and Fabrizio registering the second and third fastest times in this afternoon's first qualifying session. Rain showers earlier this morning meant that both riders had to cope with less than optimum grip on the track but this did not seem to deter them and an improvement in the weather conditions throughout the day allowed for some improvements regarding the set up of the 1098 F08 machines to take place in both riders' pit garages.

Corser Heads The Field In Phillip Island First Qualifying
29 February 2008
Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB) heads the field after the first qualifying session for the Australian Round of the World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island. The 36-year-old Australian, who stands to become the record holder for Superbike rider presence this weekend, set a time of 1 minute 32.336 on his Yamaha YZF-R1 to clinch the overnight pole. Fellow Aussie Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) was a shade slower at 1’32.374 on his Ducati 1098, with team-mate Michel Fabrizio another tenth behind in third.

Pitt Claims Provisional Pole At Phillip Island
29 February 2008
The first qualifying practice for the second round of the World Supersport Championship saw Australian Andrew Pitt put in a good performance on his home circuit. In the morning’s free practice session under slightly wet conditions, Pitt showed he was well on the pace and left the pit box only to complete 3 laps in which he claimed top position on the sheets before Fabien Foret. The afternoon session showed no difference and Pitt once again dominated the field, claiming provisional pole before current series leader and fellow Australian Broc Parkes. Teammate Jonathan Rea put in a satisfying performance and claimed 7th position, despite the hand injury he sustained in last weeks’ Qatar crash.
