Gowland Taken Out, Kallio in the Points
14 May 2008 | 1 Comment
It was a race of highs and lows for the Benjan Racing Team at the fast and furious Italian circuit of Monza in the 5th round of the World Supersport Championship as Graeme Gowland was down and out at turn one through no fault of his own whilst Vesa Kallio added more points to the scoreboard. Gowland, who had qualified in 27th out of a strong 37 rider field, got a good start when the lights went out for the 16 lap race but at the tight first turn chicane he was taken off his Honda CBR600RR by an out of control Triumph ridden by Ruggero Scambia. Gowland was unable to rejoin the action as he suffered an arm injury in the accident and was taken to the medical centre.

Top Ten For Lavilla at Monza
13 May 2008
Vent Axia VK Honda rider Gregorio Lavilla overcame a couple of problems to post a pair of points scoring results in round five of the World Superbike Championship held at Monza in Italy yesterday. The Paul Bird Motorsport rider squeezed into Superpole in sixteenth position and was hoping for a pair of solid points scoring finishes at the historic Italian circuit. In the opening race, the 36 year old Spaniard had clawed his way up to eighth and was looking set for a good result when the machine started to run out of fuel on the final lap and he had to eventually coast in to an eleventh place finish at the end of the first 18 lap race.

Tough Raceday For Monza WSB Duo
12 May 2008
Makoto Tamada and Régis Laconi found their early ambitions at Monza not matched by their raceday fortunes, as neither rider managed to finish a race today. Laconi has a technical problem in race one and then had to start race two from pitlane, after his original machine developed a fault. He was running strongly and looking set for a points score, until he fell on lap seven, at the Parabolica corner.

Fujiwara Gets A Point At Monza
12 May 2008
Katsuaki Fujiwara (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) managed to score a point for 15th at Monza, after finding problems holding a line during corner entries. Fujiwara was 21st on lap one but battled hard, despite having an imperfect set-up for the challenging Monza circuit. Chris Walker (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) had an incredibly dramatic race, being hit by another rider, crashing, re-starting, making on-the-move repairs and finally being penalised with a ride through for cutting one of Monza’s many chicanes. He retired in pit lane on lap five.

Pirelli Race Review - Monza
12 May 2008
A classic Italian weekend started on Thursday 8th May with a press conference, held at the Castello della Bicocca degli Arcimboldi, inside Pirelli’s headquarters in Milan. Many riders from the different classes participated, along with Pirelli and FGSport top-level management. Fanatics around the world watched it live, on the pirellityre.com website. On the racing stage, Pirelli fulfilled its promises by bringing a range of excellent tyres, both in SBK and WSS classes; thus Parkes and Bayliss made new track records at Monza. In SBK, Neukirchner was fast from Friday and ended Superpole in 2nd position, behind Bayliss, and clearly aiming to take his first ever SBK victory at the legendary Monza.

Kiyonari Shines in Monza with First WSB Podium
12 May 2008
HANNspree Ten Kate Honda rider Ryuichi Kiyonari was one of the surprises in the second Superbike race at Monza today as he magnificently pushed his Honda to the top of the field and claimed his first ever World Superbike podium, despite the fact he had never raced the famous Italian track before. His maiden World Superbike podium was the reward for a strong race in which he worked hard to catch up with the front runners. Starting from 8th place on the grid, Kiyonari was determined to make his way forward and close the gap with the front runners. The last laps of the race saw Kiyonari closely following Haga and Neukirchner swapping the lead. He managed to overhaul the fighting dogs and grab the lead, but lost it in the final turn and finished his best race this season in third place with only 0.05 from victory.

Haga Takes Win Number Two
12 May 2008
Noriyuki Haga overcame some early weekend set-up issues to power his way to a superb race two win for his Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team at their home track of Monza. Having already scored second in the first race this was Haga's best weekend of the year so far and pushed him further up the championship table. He now sits third overall, on 112 points. In the first race Haga pushed hard in the early laps, taking the new lap record of 1'45.882, beating his previous 2007 record as he brought himself forward to join what had been a breakaway trio of eventual winner Max Neukirchner, Yukio Kagayama and eventual third place rider, Troy Bayliss.

Foret Wins in Style at Monza
12 May 2008
Both Fabien Foret and Broc Parkes posted heroic performances in race conditions at Monza, with Foret taking his first win of the 2008 season, by 1.199 seconds, and Parkes finishing third. Parkes was unsure if he could even ride at all on Wednesday, so his podium finish, his second of the year, was an impressive performance from the tough Australian rider. Foret pulled through from fifth after an imperfect start to overhaul early leaders Josh Brookes and Parkes, and after taking a firm grip on the lead on lap nine the winning result was never really in doubt. Parkes had a pretty lonely race after putting up a spirited defence of his early leading position, fighting with Brookes for much of the time. He finished only six seconds from victory, and five seconds ahead of the next best rider, Andrew Pitt.

Yamaha Contenders Taken Out at Monza
12 May 2008
A promising race at Monza for top Yamaha qualifier Claudio Corti (Yamaha Motor Italia Junior Team) and his fellow R1 runners was ended at the first chicane, in a double crash, which also put out Michele Pirro (Yamaha Lorenzini by Leoni YZF-R1) and Sylvain Barrier (YZF Yamaha Junior Team). No fewer than 11 riders were halted by the results of these crashes, with Corti and Pirro hit by a bike that ran across the infield as another incident took place behind.

Tremendous Win for Xavi
12 May 2008
Team Alstare Suzuki rider Xavier Simeon won the third round of the 2008 Superstock 1000 FIM Cup at Monza today after leading the race from start to finish. Xavi started from the third row of the grid, but made a superb start and was third going into the first corner. It was just as well that he was so far up the field, for behind him a rider had crashed braking for the turn and then skittled ten riders and their bikes! Despite there being bikes and riders all over the first chicane, by the time Xavi and the rest of the depleted field came round again the track was clear. Xavi then controlled the race from the front and ran out the winner by over two seconds, with Matej Smrz (Honda) second and Alessandro Polita (Ducati) third. Xavi’s win also moves him into first place in the championship, with a fifteen point lead over Polita.

Superb Debut Win for Max!
12 May 2008
Team Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner took a superb maiden victory at Monza and also went into the record books for being the first German to win a World Superbike Championship race. Ever since Valencia, when he was cruelly robbed of victory on the last lap, Max has been ready to win and today he emphatically showed that he is a force to be reckoned with this year. Max was a race-long contender for a win in the second race, but was beaten to the line in a photo-finish with Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha). At the end, he was deprived of victory (and a remarkable double!) by just nine thousandths of a second! Haga took second place in race one, with Troy Bayliss (Ducati) third and Suzuki Alstare riders Yukio Kagayama and Fonsi Nieto fourth and seventh places respectively. Behind Haga and Neukirchner in race two, was Ryuichi Kiyonari (Honda) in third, followed by Fonsi Nieto. Yukio suffered a dramatic crash in the Ascari chicane after just four laps, hurting his ribs and right knee in the process.

Pitt Takes 4th in Monza Supersport Race
12 May 2008
HANNspree Ten Kate Honda’s Andrew Pitt was well on the pace in the warm up session but struggled in race conditions at Monza today. After an imperfect start and a struggle through the first corner, Pitt came through the first lap in 8th position and started his move forward. Despite a strong overhaul of riders in front of him, problems with the grip of his tires forced him to abort plans to push further and he finished the race in 4th position.

Neukirchner & Haga Share the Wins in Monza
12 May 2008
Max Neukirchner (Alstare Suzuki) and Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia) shared the wins in the IDS Italian Round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in front of a record crowd of 112,000 spectators. The first-ever win for a German rider in World Superbike history came at the end of a sprint finish to the line with Haga, just 0.058 seconds behind at the flag. The final podium place went to championship leader Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) after a late attack by Yukio Kagayama (Suzuki Alstare), who finished fourth despite a couple of errors at the chicane.

Top Five Finishes for Bayliss & Fabrizio at Monza
12 May 2008
As Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) himself predicted yesterday, today's races consisted of hard fought battles. Despite a DNF in Race 2, a third place finish in Race 1 means that Troy and his Ducati 1098 F08 have nonetheless further increased the championship lead. Michel Fabrizio rode hard in both races to take ninth and fifth position finishes, and hence 18 extremely important championship points.

Unbelieveable Misfortune at Monza for Scuderia Triumph-SC
12 May 2008
It lasted just a few meters the race at Monza for the pair of 675 Triumph – SC ridden by Garry McCoy and Ruggero Scambia: both the riders of the English triples have been throw down in the gravel during the first lap confusion in the first chicane after a quite good start. The morning’s warm up session showed that the situation was increasing in a positive way and just the unbelievable misfortune did prevent a final good result.

Difficult Superstock Weekend for KTM in Monza
12 May 2008
The first appearance of the KTM Maehr Superstock Team on the traditional Monza racing circuit came to a premature end three laps into the race when Rene Mähr had shut down his RC8 and return to the pits. The newly formed team and their talented rider Rene Maehr already experienced some difficulty with the KTM 1190 RC8 during training for the third race in the FIM Superstock 1000 World Cup on the spirited and legendary racing circuit at Monza. The bike was launched in the spring of 2008 and KTM and the team have declared their first season on the racing circuit as one in which to learn and to gain experience.

Lucas De Carolis Takes Pole In Suzuki GSX-R Cup At Monza
11 May 2008
Frenchman Lucas de Carolis held off a late charge by ‘wild card’ Fabrizio Pirovano to take pole position for tomorrow’s second round of the 2008 Suzuki GSX-R Cup at Monza. Despite it being his first time at the circuit, twenty-one year old De Carolis took to it almost straightaway. Behind Pirovano in third place is Spaniard Arturo Tizon, with Italian Simone Saltarelli fourth.

Alstare Suzuki's Max Neukirchner On The Front Row For Monza!
11 May 2008
It took a new lap record by series leader Troy Bayliss (Ducati) to deprive Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner of a Superpole win at Monza today. Bayliss smashed Noriyuki Haga’s 2007 time by well over a second, to take his third Superpole win of the season.

Third Row Start For Xavier Simeon Due To Engine Problems
11 May 2008
Team Alstare Suzuki rider Xavi Simeon will start tomorrow’s third round of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup from the third row of the grid after problems today. The team changed the engine braking characteristics in order to help Xavi in a particular corner but unfortunately it caused problems in the other corners and Xavi couldn’t push as hard as he wanted. But the lap times of the top ten are very close and, if Xavi had gone just two tenths of a second quicker he would’ve ended up on the front row of the grid! Italian Claudio Corti (Yamaha) set the day’s fastest lap, with Michele Pirro (Yamaha) second, Davide Giugliano (Suzuki) third and Michele Magnoni (Yamaha) fourth.

Broc Parkes Takes Pole At Monza For Yamaha
11 May 2008
Yamaha World Supersport Team riders Broc Parkes and Fabien Foret earned front row starts for Sunday’s Monza WSS race, with Parkes taking pole and a new track record of 1’49.868 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. It was Parkes’ second pole in succession and the third Yamaha pole of the 2008 season. It was also his sixth career pole win.
