Byrne & Crutchlow Take the Victories at Brands

Cal Crutchlow powered through the pain barrier to take third place, adrift of Shane Byrne and Tom Sykes, and then took a victory in the re-scheduled round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch. The HM Plant Honda rider sustained a dislocated right ankle and ligament damage in a crash in the Holiday Monday round at Oulton Park and was passed fit to race after lengthy treatment by the Coventry City physio and series’ medics. He had started alongside Byrne at the front of the grid – the positions had been decided five weeks earlier at the snow aborted opening round, and in total contrast the races were fought out over a sun-drenched Kent grand prix circuit.

First & Second in Free Practice for Airwaves

The Airwaves Ducati team returned to Brands Hatch today for the re-scheduled round one event. With temperatures reaching 27 degrees the Superbikes were out on track for two 30 minute practice sessions. Shane Byrne was quickest in both practices with his fastest time of 1:27.158 coming in first practice. He then completed 21 laps, more than any other competitor, in second practice whilst consistently recording sub 1:28 times. Having already qualified in pole position for tomorrow‚s races Shane is looking to repeat his double winning performance of Oulton Park.

Crutchlow Defies Injury to Race but Byrne Takes Pole

Cal Crutchlow will defy the pain from his injured right ankle to keep his Bennetts British Superbike title bid on track at Brands Hatch but the HM Plant Honda rider faces a tough challenge from the series leading Shane Byrne. The Airwaves Ducati rider starts the races from pole postion, having topped the qualifying leaderboard ahead of the snow aborted opening round last month, and that position has been carried forward to this ‘round one – take two.’ Byrne had lapped then in a time of 1m 25.832secs and again he was the rider topping the free practice leaderboard at the sun-drenched Kent grand prix circuit, with a lap of 95.03mph, just 0.159secs up on HM Plant Honda rider Leon Haslam who starts from third place on the grid.

After Shane Byrne‚s winning double at Oulton Park Airwaves Ducati head back to Brands Hatch this weekend for the re-scheduled round 1 event which was cancelled due to heavy snowfall on April 6th. Shane Byrne and Leon Camier, who are currently first and second in the championship, will start the races from the positions in which they qualified in early April. Shane Byrne will therefore start the 20 lap race from pole position with Leon Camier in 6th. Shane set the fastest times throughout practice and qualifying at the 2.3 mile GP circuit, with Leon Camier performing well to overcome his injury and claim a spot on the second row.

Series Leader Byrne Confident of More Success

Shane Byrne heads confidently into his favourite Brands Hatch circuit for the rescheduled round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship this weekend intent on tightening his grip on the title that he last held five year ago. The Airwaves Ducati rider has won three of the four races held so far, opening up a 39 points advantage over his team-mate Leon Camier and unusually as Byrne prepares for these races, on the demanding grand prix circuit, that could be crucial to his hopes, he already knows that he will be on pole position for them.

Bennetts BSB Pirelli Race Review Oulton Park

In race 1 the drama engulfed the opening British Superbike race at Oulton Park. With rain spotting as the riders took their positions at the end of the sighting lap, the red flag brought a swift conclusion as a host of riders, including holeshot rider Tom Sykes, crashing at the first corner. A swift re-start ensued of the full 18-lap race distance. Sykes took the holeshot on his Rizla Suzuki again, stretching his lead to almost a second from Crutchlow’s HM Plant Honda by the culmination of the opening lap. Byrne, Haslam and Camier fought doggedly for third as Crutchlow took the lead with a classic manoeuvre at Lodge on lap 2.

Double Top For Airwaves Ducati

The Airwaves Ducati team kicked up a gear and leave Oulton Park first and second in the championship after Shane Byrne recorded a double race win and Leon Camier achieved two 3rd positions in today‚s races. In a restarted wet race one both Airwaves Ducati riders got a good start, maintaining consistent pace to find themselves in 2nd and 4th position respectively by lap 8. Shane took the lead on lap 11 with Leon Camier moving into the final podium spot. Shane held off a brief challenge to his lead by Leon Haslam, to take his second win of the season. Leon Camier held 3rd place for his first podium of the season.

Daily Double for Byrne Puts Him in Control in Title Stakes

Shane Byrne took a winning double in an incident littered Oulton Park round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship to tighten his grip on the crown. The first race was stopped on the opening lap when five riders, including early leader Tom Sykes, tipped off in three incidents and with rain falling prior to the re-start the teams gambled on tyre choice.

First & Second Row for Airwaves Ducati

Shane Byrne will start round 3 of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship from 2nd position following a strong performance in difficult qualifying conditions at Oulton Park today. Leon Camier will start from the second row in 7th position. Following a wet practice session heavily delayed and reduced in time this morning, qualifying was also declared as wet. However the rain held off for the 50 minutes and a drying racing line ensured lap times quickened as the session progressed. Having switched from wet to slick Pirelli tyres early on, both Airwaves Ducati riders‚ times continually fell.

Confident Crutchlow Puts in Late Charge to Take Pole

Cal Crutchlow, fresh from the maiden race victory last time out, powered his HM Plant Honda onto pole start for the Holiday Monday third round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park, running half a second clear of the Airwaves Ducati rider, Shane Byrne, with whom he shares the lead in the title stakes.

The HM Plant Honda proved to be the man for all conditions in the Swan Combi 50 - Roll for Pole grid deciding session which had begun on a wet Cheshire circuit. Crutchlow set the early pace, maintaining the form that he had shown throughout the earlier free practice sessions.

Positive Start in Practice for Airwaves

The Airwaves Ducati team put in a good performance in the two practice sessions at Oulton Park today. Championship leader Shane Byrne was quickest in the first session and 3rd in this afternoons practice whilst Leon Camier achieved a 5th and 6th place. Leon, who completed an impressive 50 laps today, set his fastest time of 1:37.793 mid way through the second 50 minute session. Having held 4th place for much of second practice Michael Rutter and Tom Sykes put in late fast laps to push Leon into 6th. He commented afterwards.

Pacy Crutchlow Shows Consistency

Cal Crutchlow, who enjoyed maiden race winning glory in the previous round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, carried that form and pace through free practice ahead of the Holiday Monday third round at Oulton Park. The HM Plant Honda rider put in a best lap of 1m 36.596secs, an average speed of 100.32mph, around the 2.692mile Cheshire circuit, heading off the determined challenge of his team-mate Leon Haslam by 0.151secs. Crutchlow, who jointly leads the early season title chase with Shane Byrne, was delighted with his continuing progress: “We’ve tried one or two things and have made a big positive step forward. There are still a few things to test but the bike is handling well.

Airwaves Ducati Optimistic for Oulton

Round three of the British Superbike championship takes place this bank holiday weekend at Oulton Park and Airwaves Ducati are feeling confident following a strong start to the season. Shane Byrne won at Thruxton two weeks ago and achieved three podiums in the championships two visits to the 2.692 mile Cheshire circuit last year. As the early championship leader he is looking forward to continuing his good start to the season.

Airwaves Ducati leave the first race of 2008 1st and 4th in the championship, after Shane Byrne won race one and came 2nd in race two. Leon Camier started his season well with a 4th and 5th place finish. In the first of the two 20 lap races Shane Byrne had dropped a few places from his pole position start but moved through the field, taking the lead on lap 13. He pulled away in the final laps to take his first win for the Airwaves Ducati team. Having struggled early on in the race Leon Camier was in 5th by lap 15. He held off a number of challenges to cross the line in a hard fought 5th place.

Byrne Beats Wind & Rain For Pole

Shane Byrne left it late to secure his second successive pole start in this year’s Bennetts British Superbike Championship and the former title winner admitted that a late gamble of tyre choice had been crucial to him bettering the time of his rival Leon Haslam. Rain earlier in the afternoon, coupled with a strong wind, combined to make conditions difficult at Thruxton and with less than four minutes remaining it seemed that Haslam, with a lap of 1m 19.872secs, had done enough to put his HM Plant Honda on top of the leaderboard.

Steady Start For Airwaves Ducati At Thruxton

The Airwaves Ducati team performed well in practice at round two of the British Superbike championship today. Shane Byrne finished the day with a 2nd and 4th place and Leon Camier secured a 7th and 12th. With windy conditions at the Hampshire circuit, the Airwaves Ducati riders completed an impressive 112 laps in the two 50 minute practices. Shane‚s fastest time of the day, 1:15.970 placed him top for much of the second session but he was pushed into 4th in the final 15 minutes. Leon Camier completed more laps throughout the day than anyone else in the field, with his quickest lap of 1:17.371 coming on lap 5 of 30 in second practice.

Crutchlow Fastest Ahead of Team-Mate Haslam

Cal Crutchlow underlined his determination to enjoy maiden race winning glory in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship by comfortably heading the free practice leaderboard at the wind-swept Thruxton in Hampshire. The HM Plant Honda rider had been on the pace throughout, upping the tempo in the afternoon session to send a warning to his rivals ahead of what will be opening race action in the country’s premier racing series.

CJ Riders Fund Ready for Thruxton

After the snow swept Brands Hatch, the CJ Riders Fund still had a very successful weekend at what was meant to be the opening round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship. Six inches of snow put a stop to the racing on Sunday, (6th April) and the meeting has now been rescheduled for May. The CJ Fund used the weekend to their advantage and had a practice run with their new CJ Unit, which worked perfectly and was situated in an ideal spot at Brands. The new CJ Promo Girls worked exceptionally hard throughout the weekend despite the freezing conditions, they still plugged away in their lycra suits collecting monies, look out for them at Thruxton!

Pirelli - Round 1 - Brands Hatch GP

The first round of the 2008 Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch, Kent, was abandoned today (6th April), due to unseasonably heavy snowfall. As a result of extensive efforts on the part of series organiser MotorSport Vision Racing, the round has been rescheduled to take place over the weekend of 10/11 May. The grid positions for all classes will be as of final qualifying positions set on Saturday 5 April.

Pole Position For Byrne & Airwaves Ducati

Shane Byrne rode the quickest lap of the weekend to secure pole position in round one of the British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch today. Leon Camier put in a strong performance to place himself 6th on the grid for tomorrow's races. Having set the fastest time in final practice this morning Shane was confident going into qualifying. His pole winning time of 1:25.832, set on Pirelli tyres, is only one tenth short of the current lap record set in 2007 by Gregorio Lavilla. Once he had set his quickest time on lap 10 of 11, he did not return to the track and his pole position was unthreatened for the remainder of the session.
