02 May 2009
After a dramatic crash in Assen last Friday - in which Stiggy Racing Honda's John Hopkins dislocated his hip and was left out of contention for the remainder of the race - the American has successfully undergone surgery in his home country, and has started his recovery.

28 March 2009 | 3 Comments
Stiggy Racing Honda Team finally broke its silence, confirming that John Hopkins will join the team from the third round of the Superbike World Championship in Valencia. Hopkins, who found himself out of a job following Kawasaki's shock withdrawal from the MotoGP Championship earlier this year, has signed a deal with the team managed and run by former GP rider Johan Stigefelt.

Hopkins Undergoes Successful Surgery
08 December 2008
Kawasaki's John Hopkins was in a buoyant mood and looking forward to a period of rest and recuperation after undergoing successful surgery at the Fremont Surgery Centre in California on Thursday. The 25-year-old Anglo-American underwent a surgical procedure to remove the metal plates from his left ankle and left foot, inserted following his high-speed crash during practice for this year's Dutch TT at Assen in June. Surgeons, led by the world renowned Doctor Arthur Ting, also performed keyhole surgery to clean up scar tissue and cartilage damage in Hopkins' left knee, which he injured in the same Assen crash. Doctor Ting also took the opportunity during the operation to remove a metal plate from the Kawasaki pilot's left hand, the result of a previous injury, to leave Hopkins hardware free for the first time in three years.

Kawasaki Conclude Successful Phillip Island Test
28 November 2008
The Kawasaki Racing Team today concluded a successful three-day test at the Phillip Island circuit in Australia, with the three riders clocking up more than 150 laps of the 4.445km track, despite less than ideal weather conditions. Overnight rain had left the track damp in the morning, and while the infamous Phillip Island wind was quick to dry the track out, it also lowered the track temperature significantly, which caught out test and development rider Olivier Jacque. The former 250cc world champion had a big crash late on in the afternoon, after highsiding himself on a cold rear tyre at the right-hand Hayshed turn. Jacque was uninjured in the crash, but admitted on his return to the pit box that it was a bit of a 'scary moment'.

Kawasaki Continue Good Work Despite Rain
28 November 2008
Work continued in Australia today with the second of three days development testing for the Kawasaki Racing Team, which brought positive results, despite mixed weather conditions at the Phillip Island circuit. Kawasaki's regular MotoGP pilots John Hopkins and Marco Melandri, who are joined by test and development rider, Olivier Jacque, were forced to halt their test sessions today due to brief rain showers. However, all three riders continued to make further improvements to their race machines and improved their lap times from the opening day of the test. Melandri, who continued his familiarisation with the Ninja ZX-RR during yesterday, evaluated the revised chassis previously tested by Olivier Jacque in today's session. The 26-year-old Italian completed 64 laps of the 4.445km circuit and significantly reduced his lap time from yesterday by nearly a second to 1'31.8s, despite crashing without injury at turn four late on in the afternoon.

Successful First Day at the Island for Kawasaki
28 November 2008
The Kawasaki Racing Team were met with perfect conditions as they arrived at the Phillip Island circuit in Australia today, to start the first of three days of development testing ahead of the annual test ban, which comes into force on 1st December. This is an important test for Kawasaki, as all the data collected during these three days in the southern hemisphere will be fed directly in the development programme for the 2009 Ninja ZX-RR, which is due to make its track debut at Sepang in February. To increase the amount of data collected, Kawasaki's regular MotoGP pilots were joined in Australia by test and development rider, Olivier Jacque, with the three of them clocking up more than 1000 kilometres around the Phillip Island circuit on the opening day.

Hopkins Improves as Melandri Makes Kawasaki Debut
28 October 2008
Less than 24 hours after the chequered flag at Valencia brought the 2008 season to a close, John Hopkins and new teammate, Marco Melandri, were back on track and working towards improving Kawasaki's Ninja ZX-RR machines ahead of the 2009 season. Hopkins exited the pit box aboard his normal lime green liveried Ninja ZX-RR, while Melandri opted for the stealth approach for his debut aboard Kawasaki's 800cc, inline four-cylinder MotoGP racer. The Italian's two machines were decked out in bare carbon fibre bodywork, with only two small screen stickers providing any indication about whose hands were on the controls.

Tough Race to End Tough Season for Kawasaki
27 October 2008
Kawasaki's John Hopkins and Anthony West faced a tough test at the Valencia circuit today, ending their 2008 MotoGP world championship campaign with 14th and 17th positions respectively in today's 30 lap race, after race day conditions differed greatly compared to practice and qualifying. Hopkins got a good start from 14th on the grid and rode spectacularly around the outside of his rivals into eighth position by the end of lap one. The 25-year-old Anglo-American set his sights on hunting down the group ahead, but early on in the race was troubled with cornering issues aboard his Ninja ZX-RR. Despite his best efforts and some gritty riding, Hopkins lost a place on lap four to Shinya Nakano, and was then unable to hold off a succession of attacks as he struggled to find grip at the 4.005km Valencia circuit.

Hopkins Hoping For Top Ten At Valencia
25 October 2008
Kawasaki's John Hopkins has his sights firmly set on a top ten finish at the final Grand Prix of the season in Valencia tomorrow, after qualifying his Ninja ZX-RR in 14th position on the grid. Anthony West will start his final race for Kawasaki from 17th position on the grid, after trailing his teammate home by just two tenths of a second this afternoon. Following yesterday's wet practice, intermittent rain at the 4km circuit today left the entire MotoGP field with little time to set-up their race machines in dry conditions. The rain began to fall just 10-minutes into the opening session of the day and although a dry line began to appear towards the end of the practice stint, neither Hopkins nor teammate West were able to switch to full slick tyres.

Stoner Grabs Ninth Pole Of Season in Valencia
25 October 2008
Ducati rider Casey Stoner has taken his ninth pole position of the 2008 season in this afternoon’s Valencia GP qualifying session, taking to twelve the total number of Bridgestone-shod poles this year, double the number that was achieved last year. Stoner’s result will be the final pole position lap to be set using the softer specification ‘qualifiers’ with next year’s tyre regulations looking set to remove the possibility to use specific qualifying tyres. Honda rider Dani Pedrosa claimed his second consecutive front row start on Bridgestone tyres, lapping just 0.053s slower than Stoner’s pole lap. Nicky Hayden, who was the pacesetter in all three practice sessions prior to qualifying, finished in third position.

Season Finale Opens with Wet Weather at Valencia
25 October 2008
The 2008 MotoGP season finale got to a very wet start at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia today, with Kawasaki's John Hopkins and Anthony West concluding the opening practice sessions in 14th and 15th positions respectively. Following the blistering heat of Malaysia last weekend, conditions today could not have been any more of a contrast, with low track temperatures and heavy rainfall present throughout the two, hour-long sessions. Both Hopkins and West found it difficult to negotiate the Valencia circuit aboard their Ninja ZX-RR race machines, as a super-slippery track surface made grip difficult to predict at maximum lean angles.

Bridgestone MotoGP Briefing - Valencia
24 October 2008
After 17 races, 435 racing laps over a total distance of 1,965 kilometres, the 2008 MotoGP World Championship enters its final leg this weekend in Valencia for the 18th and last round of the season. Ahead of the Valencia GP, there have been four different race winners this season with Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner strongly representing Bridgestone on the top step of the podium. A total of nine riders have scored podium results with Rizla Suzuki duo Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi, as well as Alice Team’s Toni Elias keeping the red Bridgestone podium caps a frequent sight on the rostrum during the year.

Kawasaki Fired Up for Season Finale
23 October 2008
Valencia once again hosts the MotoGP season finale, and after a sweltering race in Sepang, both Kawasaki riders return to Europe determined to end their season on a high with a strong showing in the final race of the year. Valencia will be particularly poignant for Anthony West, who will make his last appearance for Kawasaki at the Spanish circuit. West, who was drafted in to the Kawasaki Racing Team as a replacement for the injured Olivier Jacque halfway through the 2007 season, will move on to pastures new next season and is determined to finish his time in MotoGP with one last good result. But the 27-year-old Australian is adamant that he intends his absence from the MotoGP paddock next year to be only a temporary one. A strong performance in the final race of the year would be a fitting end to West's time in the premier class, but the Kawasaki pilot is under no illusions about how tough a race Valencia will be.

Kawasaki Duo Endure Sweltering Sepang
20 October 2008
Kawasaki's John Hopkins overcame rear traction problems and the sweltering heat to take a hard fought 11th place in today's Malaysian Grand Prix. Anthony West followed his Anglo-American teammate home in 12th place, after struggling with similar issues around the blisteringly hot Sepang track. Both Kawasaki riders managed to make up places in the drag race from the start down to the left-hand turn one, but then fell victim to other riders running wide as the pack jostled for position on the opening lap.

Pedrosa Takes First Bridgestone Pole in Malaysia
18 October 2008
Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa has stormed to pole position in this afternoon’s turbulent qualifying hour, taking his first pole on Bridgestone tyres in today’s wet-dry session. Pedrosa set his time in the dying moments of the session, topping the timesheets by an impressive 0.4s from Fiat Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi who claimed his tenth front row start of 2008. Pedrosa and Rossi were the only two men to dip under the 2m02s mark with lap times continuing to tumble as the long 5.543km Sepang track dried out throughout the session. Jorge Lorenzo took the final front row spot with third place for Fiat Yamaha. Such was the frantic nature of the qualifying hour that a total of 12 different riders held provisional pole at some point in the session with a total of 37 different changes of provisional pole position time during the sixty minutes.

Hopkins & West on Target for Top Ten at Sepang
18 October 2008
John Hopkins overcame difficult track conditions at the Sepang circuit this afternoon, to qualify his Ninja ZX-RR in tenth place for tomorrow's Malaysian Grand Prix. Anthony West trailed his Kawasaki teammate by just two tenths of a second at the end of the hour-long timed session, and will start tomorrow's 21-lap race from 13th position and the fifth row of the grid. With rain forecast for qualifying, and mindful of the fact that the 2006 grid was decided on practice times when monsoon conditions saw the final timed session cancelled, both Kawasaki riders went out on qualifying rubber right at the end of free practice this morning. A mistake by Hopkins cost him time, but West managed to get the best from the super-sticky rubber to claim the top spot on the timesheet at the conclusion of the session.

Kawasaki Riders Looking for Set-Up in Sepang
17 October 2008
Kawasaki's Anthony West and John Hopkins both remain confident of a strong performance in Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix, despite enduring a difficult opening day at Sepang. Less than ideal track conditions, unpredictable weather and set-up issues on their Ninja ZX-RR machines conspired against the two Kawasaki pilots today, leaving them short of the top ten positions both had targeted ahead of this weekend's race. West spent both sessions today looking again for a solution to the rear grip problems than have plagued him all season, with the Australian continuing to complain that the rear tyre is too quick to spin up out of the turns and the bike is going sideways rather than forwards.
