Hopkins Sidelined For Sachsenring & Laguna

Kawasaki's John Hopkins will sit out the German and US Grand Prix races, after further medical checks revealed the injuries he sustained in a high-speed qualifying crash at Assen would r equire corrective surgery before he can return to action.Hopkins crashed at 230km/h towards the end of qualifying for the Dutch TT, after losing the front of his Ninja ZX-RR at Ramshoek corner, the ultra-fast left-hander just before the final chicane. The Kawasaki pilot slid across the track and through the gravel trap before colliding feet first with the tyre wall on the outside of the turn. X-rays of his injured left leg at the circuit medical centre revealed that Hopkins had sustained a fracture to the bottom of his tibia and that he had reopened a previous fracture, the result of a crash earlier in his racing career. The x-rays also showed a fracture to the lateral malleolus, which is one of the bones at the top of the ankle.

Toseland Back Into The Unknown

After disappointments at two circuits he knows well, James Toseland returns to his journey into the unknown at the Alice Grand Prix of Germany at the tight twisty Sachsenring on Sunday. The 27 year old Yorkshireman has shown already in his MotoGP debut season how quickly he can learn new circuits on the Tech 3 Yamaha and the tenth round of the MotoGP World Championship should be no exception. Toseland crashed in Donington and struggled with the set-up in Assen to eventually finish in ninth place but still holds eighth place in the Championship, just ten points behind former World Champion Nicky Hayden.

Biker Paul Stars in New PlayStation 2 Game

A top North Wales biker has a starring role in a new all-action PlayStation 2 game. One of the virtual riders in the game is based on speed king Paul Owen, from Llangollen. Paul, 36, is fresh from competing in the legendary Isle of Man TT series for the 12th time. Bike fans will be able to see his collection of powerful TT motorbikes and trophies in real life soon. He’s going to be putting them on display at the Motorbike Show in his hometown in August. But Paul can next be seen in action on the small screen thanks to Jester Interactive, developers of TT Superbikes Real Road Racing Championship, a PlayStation 2 game that is released this Friday, July 4th.

Rutter Secures Stunning Win

36-year-old Michael Rutter secured an unbelievable race win at round six of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Mallory Park today, 29th June. Despite crashing heavily in race one and seriously hurting his hand Rutter fought through the pain barrier to take his first race win since May 2005 in an epic race two. Team-mate John Laverty on the Buildbase NW200 1098 R Ducati sealed a strong win and second place in the Daily Star Cup races, further extending his lead in the Cup Championship.

Rutter Takes First Victory in Over Three Years

Michael Rutter powered in a popular victory in a dramatic sixth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship as he headed off the challenge of runaway series leading Shane Byrne in a rain affected second race at Mallory Park. Earlier in the afternoon the Airwaves Ducati rider had taken his eighth victory and he was not too concerned about having to settle for second best to his North West 200 Ducati rival who had gambled correctly on tyre choice. Rutter, regarded as something of a circuit expert, decided that the rains had passed and the Leicestershire track would dry – he opted to run on slick tyres and that decision was a winner as a dry line quickly developed.

Double Blow for Kawasaki in Assen

After the disappointment of the qualifying crash that sidelined John Hopkins, the Kawasaki Racing Team were dealt a double blow at Assen today when Anthony West crashed out of the Dutch TT just 7 laps into the race. The 26-year-old Kawasaki pilot got a good start from the sixth row of the grid, but lost contact with the group ahead of him after losing time avoiding Alex De Angelis, who highsided himself out the race on the opening lap, right in front of West's Ninja ZX-RR.

Qualifying Crash Rules Hopkins Out of Assen Race

Kawasaki's John Hopkins has been ruled out of tomorrow's Dutch TT at Assen, after sustaining a fractured left ankle and suspected compression injuries to his left knee in a high-speed crash during this afternoon's qualifying session. The 25-year-old Anglo-American lost the front of his Ninja ZX-RR under braking for the left-hander at turn 12, one of the fastest corners on the Assen circuit, in the closing minutes of the timed session. Hopkins managed to separate himself from his sliding Ninja ZX-RR, but sustained the injuries to his left leg when he collided with the tyre wall on the outside of the corner.

Crutchlow at Home & Fastest – Free Practice

Cal Crutchlow aims to make home advantage count as the chase for the Bennetts British Superbike title continues at his local circuit of Mallory Park and the 22 year old Coventry rider topped the free practice leaderboard, though by only a split second from series leader Shane Byrne. The HM Plant Honda rider is one of only two men to beat the Airwaves Ducati rider so far, and Crutchlow is ready for more, and he underlined his determination with a 56.698secs, 89.52 mph lap of the short but demanding 1.41 mile Leicestershire circuit.

Assen Annialated by Championship Trio

A fantastic one hour MotoGP qualifying session just whetted the appetite for the 26 lap Dutch TT at Assen tomorrow afternoon. The Championship chasing trio of Valentino Rossi. Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner decimated the lap record round the legendary 2.80 mile track in the north of Holland as they fought for pole position. In a hectic last couple of minutes it was World Champion Stoner riding the Marlboro Ducati who grabbed his third successive pole position but only after a tremendous fight by first Rossi and then by Pedrosa in the very last few seconds. Riding the Repsol Honda ,Pedrosa almost took pole on his very last lap but had to settle for second and is joined on the front row by Championship leader Valentino Rossi’s Fiat Yamaha. The trio were separated by just over one tenth of a second to set up a tremendous battle tomorrow.

Kawasaki's Hopkins on the Pace at Assen

Kawasaki's John Hopkins completed the opening practice day at the Assen circuit in a confident mood, having made further improvements to his Ninja ZX-RR and finishing in eighth place overall. Hopkins was pleased to be challenging for top positions after finding a good machine setting. With only half a second separating second and 12th position on the timesheet, competition is already fierce on the opening day of the Dutch TT. Hopkins is running an upgraded version of Kawasaki's Ninja ZX-RR engine this weekend and this, together with improvements in set-up over the last two races, means that Hopkins is confident of improving further his position ahead of the race.

Stoner Storms Into Assen

Just four days after his Donington Park triumph Casey Stoner was back in action on the Marlboro Ducati to set the fastest lap ever recorded by a motorcycle round the 2.830 mile Assen circuit in the North of Holland this afternoon. The 22 year old World Champion was in stunning form both in the morning and afternoon practice sessions held in bright sunshine, to lead Championship leader Valentino Rossi by over seven tenths of one second. The Australian revealed after his British Grand Prix win on Sunday that the Ducati team had developed some improved electronics which he hoped would continue to be as successful in Assen and that certainly proved the case. Third fastest was American Colin Edwards riding the Tech 3 Yamaha in front of 2006 Assen winner Nicky Hayden on the pneumatic valve Repsol Honda.

Stoner Sets Record-Breaking Standard in Assen Practice

Ducati Corse rider Casey Stoner, winner of last weekend’s British Grand Prix, continued his impressive form in today’s opening practice sessions for Saturday’s Dutch TT at Assen, beating the existing pole position record, set in 2006 by John Hopkins, by almost four-tenths-of-a-second, using Bridgestone race tyres. During today’s two practice sessions, Stoner completed an impressive 17 laps quicker than any other riders’ best of the day, setting a high benchmark for the remainder of the weekend. His best time of the day, 1m36.087s, was 0.7s quicker than his nearest challenger, Fiat Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi, who ended the day in second position.

Toseland Picks Himself Up & Prepares For Assen Battle

His pride may be damaged and his hand bruised but James Toseland has already put the Donington disaster behind him as he prepares for the next contest, the A-Style Dutch TT at Assen on Saturday. The 27 year old Yorkshireman arrives at the ninth round of the MotoGP World Championship with a winning pedigree at the 2.830 miles circuit in the World Superbike Championship. The Tech 3 Yamaha rider is eighth in the World Championship in his debut MotoGP season and will forget that first bend crash at Donington as soon as practice starts on Thursday morning.

Byrne Comfortably Ahead, But Does Fight-back Start Here?

Shane Byrne heads the Bennetts British Superbike Championship going into the sixth round at Mallory Park this weekend but the Airwaves Ducati rider is expecting his rivals to begin their fight-back in the title stakes at the short, but demanding Leicestershire circuit. The Spanish based rider has won seven of the ten races held so far, opening up a commanding 83 points advantage ahead of his team-mate Leon Camier, and he goes into these races in confident mood, having won one of the two races in the corresponding round of last year. Byrne then was riding for Honda, and the winner of the other race last term, Ryuichi Kiyonari, was also aboard a Fireblade and it is those two results that give the pursuing pack the belief that they can start claw back the points.

Third Row for Wet Weather West

Kawasaki's Anthony West will start tomorrow's British Grand Prix from the third row of the grid, after qualifying his Ninja ZX-RR in seventh position during this afternoon's rain soaked timed session at Donington Park. The slippery conditions at the 4.023km track caught out many leading riders during the two, hour-long sessions today, although following the developments made in yesterday's dry practice, West managed to find a good set-up aboard his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR.

Bridgestone Riders Lock Out Front Row in Donington

Bridgestone-shod riders Casey Stoner (Ducati Corse), Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) and Chris Vermeulen (Rizla Suzuki) have locked out the three front row positions for tomorrow’s British Grand Prix after a highly competitive wet qualifying session at Donington Park this afternoon. Stoner has been on the pace all weekend in dry and wet conditions, and dominated the qualifying hour today, taking pole position by an impressive margin of almost seven-tenths-of-a-second. It is his second consecutive pole position of the season and the third consecutive pole position for a rider on Bridgestone tyres, after Rossi took the top spot in Mugello, and Stoner’s Catalan pole from two weeks ago.

Stoner on Flying Form in British Practice

Bridgestone-shod Ducati rider Casey Stoner was in impressive form during today’s opening two free practice sessions for Sunday’s British Grand Prix. Stoner was the fastest man around Donington Park throughout both sessions leading his nearest rivals by over half-a-second. Stoner won last year’s wet-drying British Grand Prix using Bridgestone wet weather tyres. It was an encouraging day’s work for Bridgestone-shod teams with Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi in third place, San Carlo Honda Gresini duo Alex de Angelis and Shina Nakano in fifth and seventh places respectively, and Rizla Suzuki’s Chris Vermeulen in ninth.
