Byrne Comfortably Ahead, But Does Fight-back Start Here?

Shane Byrne heads the Bennetts British Superbike Championship going into the sixth round at Mallory Park this weekend but the Airwaves Ducati rider is expecting his rivals to begin their fight-back in the title stakes at the short, but demanding Leicestershire circuit. The Spanish based rider has won seven of the ten races held so far, opening up a commanding 83 points advantage ahead of his team-mate Leon Camier, and he goes into these races in confident mood, having won one of the two races in the corresponding round of last year. Byrne then was riding for Honda, and the winner of the other race last term, Ryuichi Kiyonari, was also aboard a Fireblade and it is those two results that give the pursuing pack the belief that they can start claw back the points.

Quay Garage Racing Seek New Rider for BSB Cup

Q8Oils-supported Quay Garage Racing are in talks with some high profile riders to replace James Buckingham, following the 23-year old’s brave decision to step back from racing. James has a long association with the North Devon team, having won the British Superbike ‘privateers cup’ with them in 2005. However he has been dogged by injury problems since a massive crash at Oulton Park in 2006 that left him with two broken ankles and has struggled to return to his previous form. James’ ankle injury ruled him out of the 2006 season and he rode with a hole in his ankle bone that caused considerable pain during his 2007 campaign. He underwent a bone graft operation at the end of the year.

Crutchlow Defies Injury to Race but Byrne Takes Pole

Cal Crutchlow will defy the pain from his injured right ankle to keep his Bennetts British Superbike title bid on track at Brands Hatch but the HM Plant Honda rider faces a tough challenge from the series leading Shane Byrne. The Airwaves Ducati rider starts the races from pole postion, having topped the qualifying leaderboard ahead of the snow aborted opening round last month, and that position has been carried forward to this ‘round one – take two.’ Byrne had lapped then in a time of 1m 25.832secs and again he was the rider topping the free practice leaderboard at the sun-drenched Kent grand prix circuit, with a lap of 95.03mph, just 0.159secs up on HM Plant Honda rider Leon Haslam who starts from third place on the grid.

Shane Byrne heads confidently into his favourite Brands Hatch circuit for the rescheduled round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship this weekend intent on tightening his grip on the title that he last held five year ago. The Airwaves Ducati rider has won three of the four races held so far, opening up a 39 points advantage over his team-mate Leon Camier and unusually as Byrne prepares for these races, on the demanding grand prix circuit, that could be crucial to his hopes, he already knows that he will be on pole position for them.

Pacy Crutchlow Shows Consistency

Cal Crutchlow, who enjoyed maiden race winning glory in the previous round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, carried that form and pace through free practice ahead of the Holiday Monday third round at Oulton Park. The HM Plant Honda rider put in a best lap of 1m 36.596secs, an average speed of 100.32mph, around the 2.692mile Cheshire circuit, heading off the determined challenge of his team-mate Leon Haslam by 0.151secs. Crutchlow, who jointly leads the early season title chase with Shane Byrne, was delighted with his continuing progress: “We’ve tried one or two things and have made a big positive step forward. There are still a few things to test but the bike is handling well.

Battling Harris Bounces Back & Promises an Upset

Shane Byrne and Cal Crutchlow power into the Holiday Monday round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship on level terms but as they plan their tactics for riding the picturesque Oulton Park circuit they need to take check the form of both Michael Rutter and Karl Harris. Rutter excelled in the recent Thruxton round, bagging a pair of thirds on the North West 200 Ducati while Harris, still sporting the bruises from his heavy crash last time out, has a good record at the Cheshire circuit, recording his best ever Superbike result, second, there last July.

Leon Haslam maintained his outside hopes of winning the Bennetts British Superbike crown with a penultimate round double victory at his local Donington Park circuit on a day of problems for the leading duo of Ryuichi Kiyonari and Jonathan Rea. Riding the Airwaves Ducati, Haslam was running fourth on an opening lap led by Chris Walker from Rea and the impressive Tom Sykes, but that was soon to change as the Derbyshire rider picked off places to be duelling for the lead with Rea.

Tom Sykes upstaged the title chasers in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship as he clipped a third of a second off the Donington Park lap record to claim his first ever pole start in the elite series. The Stobart Vent Axia Motorsport Honda rider lapped the 2.5 mile Leicestershire grand prix circuit in 1m 30.901secs, an average speed of 99.00mph to head off the threat of local rider and four times series runner-up Chris Walker riding the Rizla Suzuki.

Victories For Haslam And Rea But Kiyonari Extends Lead

Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea shared the victories in a dramatic, incident packed eleventh round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park in which Ryuchi Kiyonari, twice second, moved closer to retaining his crown. The Japanese rider is now 41 points clear of his HM Plant Honda team-mate Rea with only two rounds remaining but he had mixed emotions at the end of the day: “Happy with lead, but wanted to win here – this is the only circuit where I have not won.” Haslam and Rea both experienced bitter-sweet times on the challenging Lincolnshire circuit.
