Colin Edwards Narrowly Misses Front Row, Toseland Eigth

Colin Edwards came within a whisker of handing the Tech 3 Yamaha team a fifth front row start in six races for tomorrow’s Italian MotoGP race in Mugello. Edwards ended today’s qualifying session in fifth place, but was only 0.070s off extending his remarkable front row starting record in 2008 with another impressive display on Michelin’s qualifying tyres. Edwards seemed certain to be on the front row when he claimed third with only five-seconds left on the clock in what was the first full dry session of a weather-hit weekend. Loris Capirossi and Casey Stoner though denied Edwards after he’d posted a 1.48.383. Edwards, who had led the way earlier after using his first Michelin qualifying tyre, is confident he can challenge for a second successive podium in tomorrow’s race, despite minimal time to find a good dry set-up due to the inclement weather conditions that dominated free practice.

James Toseland Impresses in Mugello Monsoon

Tech 3 Yamaha rider James Toseland produced a masterful exhibition of wet weather riding this afternoon to set one of the fastest times in a rain-lashed second free practice session in Mugello. The British rider, who was using a new shorter wheelbase set-up for the first time to help improve rear grip, clocked a best time of 2.02.412 to finish just 0.085s behind MotoGP world championship leader and Mugello expert Valentino Rossi. Toseland led the session for long periods as he took full advantage of a special wet tyre test he took part in at Michelin’s Clermont-Ferrand headquarters last week, first moving to the top of the timesheets just before the halfway stage. Toseland was untouchable as conditions worsened with riders fighting to control big straight-line slides as they powered through large patches of standing water at 190mph.

Edwards Claims Home Podium for Tech 3 Yamaha

Colin Edwards stormed to his first podium finish of the season in Le Mans today to hand a jubilant Tech 3 Yamaha squad its first premier class top three finish since 2004. Edwards finished third in a rain-affected 28-lap race to give Tech 3 its first home podium since 2003, while the American also helped Yamaha to its first clean sweep of the rostrum since 2001. Starting from the front row of the grid for the fourth time in five races, the American was immediately in contention for the lead as he pursued reigning world champion Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa.

Another Typically Determined Effort For Tech 3 Yamaha Team

The Tech 3 Yamaha Team led by Spaniard Carlos Checa put in another typically determined effort during the Malaysian Grand Prix held in sweltering conditions at the Sepang circuit in an absolutely enthralling race won in style by fellow Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi. Checa managed to finish in 12th position in front of factory rider Makoto Tamada while team mate James Ellison had another difficult weekend to finish just out of the points in 16th spot.
