15 January 2009
The FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) has today published the entry lists for the 2009 Superbike and Supersport World Championships. Both championships, organized by Infront Motor Sports, are continuing their successful trend, with the Superbike category in particular going against the recent unhealthy global economic downturn by posting a record number of permanent entries and manufacturer representatives. The 2009 HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship entry list shows 32 inscriptions from 10 countries, and seven different manufacturer bikes from Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha, an unprecedented level of factory participation in a world championship.

Lavilla Just Misses Out on Portimao Podium
03 November 2008
In the final round of the Hannspree World Superbike Championship at the brand new Portimao circuit on the Portuguese Algarve, Vent Axia VK Honda rider Gregorio Lavilla rounded off the season with a battling performance to record his second best result of the year. After qualifying the Paul Bird Motorsport Honda in a disappointing 17th place in the weather-blighted sessions, the Spanish rider very nearly equalled his best result of the season of fourth as he scythed his way through the field in the opening race to battle with the eventual podium finishers. However, on the final corner of the race, Greg nearly high-sided and was fired out of the seat before regaining control and crossing the line in sixth place.

Bayliss Winds up Superbike Career with Double Win in Portugal
03 November 2008
Troy Bayliss wound up his Superbike career, and the 2008 FIM Superbike World Championship, with a spectacular double win in the final round at the Portimao circuit in Portugal in front of 91,000 spectators. The first race was totally dominated by Bayliss, who powered into the lead at the start and was never seen again. The triple world champion’s margin over his pursuers was just over two seconds at the flag but it had been much wider throughout the race. There was a terrific scrap for the remaining podium places, the right choice of Pirelli tyre making all the difference and in the end it was Checa who came on strong to take the runner-up slot from Corser. The outcome for fourth place was also uncertain until the flag, and it eventually went to Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), making his WSBK debut. Fonsi Nieto (Suzuki Alstare) recovered well to finish fifth, ahead of another Spaniard, Gregorio Lavilla (VentAxia Honda) and Leon Haslam (HM Plant Honda). Max Neukirchner (Alstare Suzuki) crashed out while trying to reach the leading group, while Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) and Max Biaggi (Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati) both retired a few corners in after a clash.

Points all Round at Magny-Cours for Greg & Chris
06 October 2008
Despite the inclement weather that affected the 13th round of the Hannspree World Superbike Championship at Magny Cours in France over the weekend, Vent Axia VK Honda riders Gregorio Lavilla and Chris Walker both came home in the points in both races. The team lost valuable practice time due to wet practice sessions on Friday and qualifying was a bit of a battle for both Chris and Greg but Greg managed to just make it into the Superpole lying in 16th which remained his final grid position for the race. Having not had a full dry weekend on the bike since joining the PBM team at Brands Hatch, Chris spent more time getting to grips with the Superbike and gaining more confidence on the bike as he posted 23rd fastest time.

05 September 2008
Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) led the way in qualifying at a cold and wet Donington Park circuit as a group of British Superbike wild-card riders made a good impression on the first day of action. The 39 year-old Australian, who has never actually won at the Leicestershire track, clocked a time of 1 minute 44.377 seconds to hold the overnight pole from Brands Hatch winner Ryuichi Kiyonari (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda). The Japanese rider, British champion for the last two years, was one-tenth behind Bayliss in second but a fraction ahead of a trio of current BSB riders headed by Cal Crutchlow (HM Plant Honda), Tom Sykes (Rizla Suzuki) and Leon Haslam (HM Plant Honda).

Spaniard Lavilla recorded thirteenth and fourteenth positions in the two races with new signing Chris Walker claiming fifteenth place in both 25-lap races on his return to World Superbike action. 16 June 2008
Despite missing out on Superpole qualification, Paul Bird Motorsport Vent Axia VK Honda rider Gregorio Lavilla added to his World Superbike Championship points tally at the Nurburgring in Germany yesterday. The first race of the day was delayed because of a sudden rain shower just as the grid was starting to form up. After a delay of around twenty minutes, Lavilla made good progress into the second corner but he was struck by another rider and he fell, unable to restart, meaning his 100% finishing record was ended.

Checa’s Double Win Leaves All to Play for at Nurburgring
11 June 2008
The double win by Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) in Round 6 of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship two weeks ago at Miller Motorsports Park in the USA succeeded in shuffling the cards in the points standings somewhat as the series reaches the mid-point of the season. With Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) failing to score in both races, the Spaniard has now cut the gap to the top man to just 28 points. What seemed a healthy points cushion for the Australian just a couple of races ago, is now not such a large gap after all, proving that anything can happen in the unpredictable world of Superbike racing. The second new circuit in the space of two weeks is the Nurburgring, which has not hosted a round of the Superbike World Championship since 1999, when the German Round made its second and last visit after the first event in 1998. Four riders in the current world championship line-up have raced Superbike there before – Troy Corser, Noriyuki Haga, Ruben Xaus and Gregorio Lavilla – with the Australian powering to a race 2 win in 1999, while Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi have raced in 500 and 250 respectively and Max Neukirchner in the German championship. Almost one decade has passed since then and this weekend’s Nurburgring race is sure to throw up a few surprises.
