2008 AMA SBK Parts Unlimited & Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix

The AMA Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited will contest the first of two rounds to be held this season at the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca circuit in Monterey, Calif. The July stop has also become an annual meeting with the superstars of the MotoGP World Championship, widely considered the pinnacle of global motorcycle road racing. The MotoGP field boasts some of the AMA Superbike Championship's most decorated graduates, led by 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden, a former AMA Superbike and Supersport champ. Hayden won the U.S. Grand Prix in 2005 and 2006. 1992 AMA 250GP champion Colin Edwards is another top MotoGP competitor with an AMA Superbike pedigree. The Texan has been performing impressively this season, regularly finishing in the top five and occasionally landing on the podium. Unfortunately, former AMA Formula Xtreme and Superstock king John Hopkins will be unable to compete in front of his home fans at Laguna Seca, ruled out by injury.

Pegram Places Third in Formula Xtreme After Two Restarts

It was a stormy weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. But despite the weather and two restarts it was Larry Pegram, of the LeoVince Foremost Insurance Ducati Team taking another third place finish, his third this season. The race at Road America was the sixth of the ten-race series. Pegram is currently in third place in the point's standings with 167 points, just three points away from second overall.

Larry Pegram, of the LeoVince Foremost Insurance Ducati Team finished fifth overall this past weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California. The race at Infineon was the fourth of the ten race series. Pegram is currently in third place overall with 111 points. Pegram started the race on the second row of the grid after qualifying in seventh with a lap time of 1:38.357. He was in seventh place for the first four laps, and then he moved up to sixth on lap five where he stayed until lap 16 when one of the riders ahead of him dropped out with mechanical problems.

Hayes Looking For Formula Xtreme Repeat In Utah

Josh Hayes has the distinction of being the rider to win the very first AMA professional race at Miller Motorsports Park when the state-of-the-art track opened last June. This Saturday, June 23, Hayes hopes to become the track’s first repeat winner as he rides his Erion Honda CBR600RR in the Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme Series presented by HMR. Chances are good for Hayes, who is riding the crest of a four-race Formula Xtreme winning streak coming into Tooele. He’s built a 25-point lead over Attack Kawasaki’s Steve Rapp. If Hayes wins this weekend it would mark the longest Formula Xtreme winning streak in seven years.

Ex-teammates Battle In AMA Superstock

Josh Hayes has a two-race winning streak coming into Saturday’s Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme Series presented by HMR. The Erion Honda rider from Gulfport, Miss., is hoping to make it three straight at the famous Northern California circuit in round four of the 10 race series. Hayes is the defending Formula Xtreme Champion and he’s bounced back after bike problems at Daytona to win last month at both of the Birmingham, Ala., and Fontana, Calif., rounds. Those victories have moved Hayes into the series lead, 10 points ahead of Bay Area native Steve Rapp, of Attack Kawasaki. Rapp won the series opener, the Daytona 200, in March.

AMA Racing announced today that it will implement a new class structure for the AMA Superbike Championship beginning with the 2009 season. The new class structure will feature three championship classes with accommodations in place to run developmental/support classes as part of the overall series.

Josh Hayes Earns Pro Racing Speed Athlete Of The Year Nomination

Josh Hayes, winner of the 2006 Lockhart-Phillips USA Formula Xtreme Series, earned his first AMA Pro Racing SPEED Athlete of the Year nomination. Hayes, 31, from Gulfport, Miss., won the Formula Xtreme title in a tight season-long battle with Yamaha riders Eric Bostrom and Jason DiSalvo. All three riders had a chance at the series coming into the final race of the year. Hayes earned the championship in spectacular fashion, winning a riveting battle over Bostrom and DiSalvo at the Mid-Ohio finale on Oct. 1.

Josh Hayes Is 2006 Formula Xtreme Champion

Josh Hayes captured the 2006 Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme Series title by taking a dramatic victory in the series finale at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday, Oct. 1. Formula Xtreme was the most closely contested series in AMA championship road racing this year. Hayes, Eric Bostrom and Jason DiSalvo came into Mid-Ohio all with a good shot at winning the title. Hayes turned in one of the best races of his career to secure his second AMA title. He rode an Erion Racing Honda CBR600RR-based machine to a 2.355-second margin of victory over Yamaha’s Bostrom.

Eric Bostrom comes into Road Atlanta’s Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme race the new series leader. The championship is far from over however, as Bostrom’s teammate, and former series leader, Jason DiSalvo and Erion Racing Honda’s Josh Hayes are just a few points back. Whoever wins at Road Atlanta this Saturday, Sept. 2, will likely have the series lead as the championship heads to the final round at Mid-Ohio on Sept. 30.

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and AMA Pro Racing today announced changes to the equipment eligibility list for AMA Formula Xtreme beginning with the 2007 racing season. In an AMA Pro Racing Press Release dated Aug. 11, 2006, an error was made in the specifications for the 990cc-1100cc 4-stroke/air-cooled machine. AMA Formula Xtreme is a support class of the AMA Superbike Championship, the nation’s premier motorcycle road racing series.

The intra-squad battle between Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme Series riders Jason DiSalvo and Eric Bostrom, of Graves Yamaha, stole most of the headlines early in the season, but lurking in the shadows was Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes. After winning in Utah last month Hayes’ bid for the Formula Xtreme lead is now in broad daylight. DiSalvo, Hayes and Bostrom bring their three-way scuffle to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this Saturday, July 22, for round seven of the 11-race series.

Earlier this season it appeared the Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme Series would be a two-rider battle between Graves Motorsports Yamaha rider Jason DiSalvo and Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes, but with the resurgence of DiSalvo’s veteran teammate Eric Bostrom, who has scored the three most recent victories, the battle for the crown has suddenly become a three-rider affair as the series moves to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, on Saturday, June 17.

Eric Bostrom’s victory in the AMA Lockhart-Phillips USA Formula Xtreme Series last month in Fontana, Calif., marked the third different winner in three races.
