Rossi Roars Through the Field to Take Second
06 October 2008
Fiat Yamaha rider and 2008 World Champion Valentino Rossi recovered from yesterday’s mishap to charge through the field from the fourth row at Phillip Island today, eventually taking second behind Casey Stoner. His team-mate Jorge Lorenzo took a second consecutive fourth place after a race long battle with several other riders. A mistake during qualifying yesterday had left Rossi with strained neck muscles and a grid position of 12th, but the Italian relishes a challenge and he was already up to eighth by the end of the first lap, despite narrowly missing a collision when Alex de Angelis crashed out in front of him. On lap four Rossi found himself the back marker of a Yamaha trio, behind his team-mate Lorenzo and Tech 3 rider James Toseland. He despatched the Spaniard within two laps and got by Toseland soon after but the Briton put up a spirited challen ge, wresting third back and hanging on for five more laps until Rossi eventually got the better of him.

The penultimate round of the MX3 World Championship was held on the beautiful track of Roggenburg, Switzerland. Husqvarna riders Christophe Martin and Thomas Allier performed well, but for Martin especially it could have been even more successful. Christophe finished the day 4th overall, after taking 4th place in race 1 and 5th in race two but could have finished higher in race two if he hadn’t unfortunately clashed with his Husqvarna teammate. Allier finished on 6th position overall, proving to be fast, but not consistent with his riding.

The Misano circuit is just 15km north of the Fiat Yamaha rider’s home town of Tavullia on the Adriatic coast, and the local hero is keen to delight his hordes of fans by adding another Italian win to his victory in Mugello earlier this year. The bad weather that has followed the paddock around Europe finally gave way to the Italian summer today, with temperatures in the low 30s soaring to 45 degrees on track. This morning saw Rossi in fifth but a few set-up changes and some work on Bridgestone tyres this afternoon saw him improve and he finished the session 0.418 seconds off Casey Stoner in second.
