Lorenzo Third Fastest at Year Ending Jerez Test
4 Days ago
Fiat Yamaha Team rider Jorge Lorenzo finished the final test of 2008 in third position today, signing off his successful rookie year in strong form before a well-deserved two-month break. His team-mate Valentino Rossi was quickest, with Dani Pedrosa second. It was another cold day in Jerez and Lorenzo did not make his first foray on track until 1.30 pm, completing 58 laps before ending his day at 5pm. The 21-year-old spent the entire time today on a test bike, which carries some new prototype parts, familiarising himself with the different machine, working on establishing a base setting and continuing to improve his feeling with the new single-brand tyres. He showed his improvement with a best lap of 1’40.426, just over 0.3 seconds off the current lap record.

Lorenzo Struggles to Find Set-Up for Valencia Closer
25 October 2008
Jorge Lorenzo endured a difficult qualifying session in Valencia today and will launch the final challenge of his rookie season from seventh on the grid. His Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi meanwhile had an equally troublesome day and will start from tenth, directly behind Lorenzo. This morning’s session was run in damp conditions that gave way to a light rain shower at one point, and with temperatures very low Lorenzo and his crew were unable to find a good balance between bike and tyres and finished in 14th. They were confident of improvements this afternoon in the dry but it was not to be and the first part of the session saw the young Spaniard lapping four seconds off the leaders.

Lorenzo in Fast Form on Rainy Return to Spain
24 October 2008
Jorge Lorenzo made a return to home soil in Valencia today but it was a somewhat rainy homecoming for the 21-year-old as the final race of the season got underway. The Fiat Yamaha rider formed a bright spot in the gloom however as his M1 is carrying a special paint job for this race, incorporating the national flag of each of the 14 countries in which he has won during his world championship career. This morning’s first free practice session was run in very heavy rain but Lorenzo made a good start and was third fastest. This afternoon, in slightly drier conditions, he made more progress with the wet setting of his Yamaha and his Michelin rain tyres and was once again third fastest. With today’s weather looking a possibility for tomorrow as well, the rookie and his crew will be looking to continue improvements, especially to the front-end of his bi ke, in order to maximise their potential before qualifying.

Fiat Yamaha Riders Head to Valencia
20 October 2008
A record-breaking season for Fiat Yamaha reaches its finale this weekend as the Grand Prix of Valencia brings the curtain down on the 2008 MotoGP World Championship. The traditional season-ending Spanish fiesta sees Valentino Rossi arrive with the title already in his pocket and the all-time points record for a season within his sights, whilst Jorge Lorenzo will become the highest-placed rookie in four-stroke MotoGP history by scoring just four points. In a season that has seen Rossi become MotoGP World Champion for the sixth time, breaking the record number of wins in the class and scoring his 150th Grand Prix podium on the way, he now needs just eleven points to break the record for the highest tally in a season. He currently stands on 357 points, meaning fifth place or above would take him above the benchmark he set in 2005, which was equalled by Casey Ston er last year.

Disappointing Day for Lorenzo
20 October 2008
Jorge Lorenzo’s high hopes for a podium in the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang today ended in the gravel trap on lap 12, when the Fiat Yamaha rookie slid out of sixth position. His team-mate and 2008 world champion Valentino Rossi meanwhile led from the middle of the race to take his ninth win of the season. After being fast all weekend and qualifying on the front row for the fifth race in succession, Lorenzo was determined to make a return to the podium after just missing out at the last two rounds. He got a poor start however, which left him in seventh, and he lacked the grip he’d had all weekend which meant he was unable to replicate the fast race pace he had shown in the practice sessions.

Five in a Front Row for Lorenzo
18 October 2008
Jorge Lorenzo and his Fiat Yamaha crew got their strategy right to secure an important front row start during a complicated qualifying session in Sepang today, the rookie’s eighth of the season and fifth in a row. Lorenzo will start from third with team-mate Valentino Rossi beside him in second and Dani Pedrosa on pole. A dry morning session gave the leading rookie time to make further improvements to his race-setting and he finished in third, but by late morning the weather had turned and an hour of heavy rain left the track soaking for the start of the MotoGP practice.

Lorenzo Fifth in Steamy Sepang
17 October 2008
Fiat Yamaha Team rider Jorge Lorenzo made a promising start to the penultimate Grand Prix of his rookie season today, finishing fifth overall in the combined standings on the opening day in Sepang. Lorenzo got his weekend off to a flying start this morning, finishing second behind his team-mate Valentino Rossi. Light rain at the start of this afternoon’s session made the track conditions slightly less predictable and the Spaniard lacked a little grip in his final rear tyre, meaning he was unable to improve on his time from this morning. He is confident however that, with some more work on his set-up and Michelin tyres tomorrow, he will be in the right form to challenge for a front-row grid slot during qualifying.

Lorenzo Returns To Podium With Stunning Second in Misano
01 September 2008
Jorge Lorenzo made it a fantastic home-race double podium for the Fiat Yamaha Team today, finishing second behind his team-mate Valentino Rossi at Misano. It was the rookie’s first podium since the team’s last one-two finish in Le Mans and it was a deserved one following the injuries that have plagued him since. Lorenzo lost some time at the start when Dani Pedrosa passed him and then had to wait for Rossi to pass his Spanish compatriot before he could make his move, which he did on lap five. When Casey Stoner crashed out of the lead on lap eight, leaving Rossi in front, Lorenzo was elevated to second and he rode a strong race from then on, exerting constant pressure on his team-mate, who was unable to relax and had to keep pushing to keep the gap at about three seconds. Lorenzo was followed home by another Spaniard, Toni Elias, who crossed the lin e 8.54 seconds off in third.

Fiat Yamaha Take Title Challenge Home to Misano
26 August 2008
The Fiat Yamaha Team contest their second ‘home’ race of the season this weekend, with the San Marino Grand Prix taking place on Italian soil at the Misano circuit on the Adriatic coast. The trip is a short one for the team, whose base is just 300km away in Milan, but even shorter for Valentino Rossi, with his hometown of Tavullia located a mere 15km down the road. The multi-World Champion heads to the thirteenth round of the current MotoGP series with his sights firmly set on a sixth premier-class title after extending his advantage over Casey Stoner to 50 points in the last round at Brno. Having missed out on the title for the past two seasons following a five-year winning streak, Rossi’s improvement is outlined by the fact that a fifth-place finish this Sunday will see him outscore his tally for either of those campaigns.
