Misano Cauldron Awaits World Superbike Contenders
26 June 2008
The action in the 2008 HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship is undoubtedly set to heat up this weekend as the runners and riders head for the Misano World Circuit cauldron on Italy’s Adriatic Riviera coast for Round 8, the San Marino Round organized in collaboration with the motorcycling federation of the tiny, Italian-speaking but independent, Republic state. With 7 rounds done and dusted, the season now enters its second half and the revised Santamonica circuit could not be a better place for this next phase of the championship, with scorching weather expected at the holiday venue to liven up proceedings. The last two rounds have produced two double winners in Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) at Miller Motorsports Park and Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB) at the Nurburgring, but more to the point they have seen Troy Bayliss’s leadership grip on a championship gradually come under threat.

Checa’s Double Win Leaves All to Play for at Nurburgring
11 June 2008
The double win by Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) in Round 6 of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship two weeks ago at Miller Motorsports Park in the USA succeeded in shuffling the cards in the points standings somewhat as the series reaches the mid-point of the season. With Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) failing to score in both races, the Spaniard has now cut the gap to the top man to just 28 points. What seemed a healthy points cushion for the Australian just a couple of races ago, is now not such a large gap after all, proving that anything can happen in the unpredictable world of Superbike racing. The second new circuit in the space of two weeks is the Nurburgring, which has not hosted a round of the Superbike World Championship since 1999, when the German Round made its second and last visit after the first event in 1998. Four riders in the current world championship line-up have raced Superbike there before – Troy Corser, Noriyuki Haga, Ruben Xaus and Gregorio Lavilla – with the Australian powering to a race 2 win in 1999, while Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi have raced in 500 and 250 respectively and Max Neukirchner in the German championship. Almost one decade has passed since then and this weekend’s Nurburgring race is sure to throw up a few surprises.

Max Neukirchner (Alstare Suzuki) and Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia) shared the wins in the IDS Italian Round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in front of a record crowd of 112,000 spectators. The first-ever win for a German rider in World Superbike history came at the end of a sprint finish to the line with Haga, just 0.058 seconds behind at the flag. The final podium place went to championship leader Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) after a late attack by Yukio Kagayama (Suzuki Alstare), who finished fourth despite a couple of errors at the chicane.

Haga Returns to Scene of Double Triumph
08 May 2008
The World Superbike Championship moves from the classic circuit of Assen to an even more historic one - Monza - for the fifth round of the series this Sunday, May 11th. Built in 1922, as first a speed bowl and then a fast parkland circuit, Monza is the oldest permanent race circuit in Europe still in regular use. A combination of flat out straights, similarly quick corners, a variety of chicanes and intense braking areas make Monza a unique stop-off on the WSB trail, especially as its Italian parkland cousin Imola is no longer on the calendar.

Bayliss Takes Healthy Points Margin to Monza
08 May 2008
Following his double victory at Assen, Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) will come to Monza for the IDS Italian Round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend with a healthy 70 point lead in the table over his closest rivals as the series reaches third distance. In eight races so far on his Ducati 1098 F08, the 39-year-old from Taree has taken the chequered flag on five occasions, finished second twice and has only been off the podium once, in race 2 at Losail. This sort of steamrolling form will guarantee Bayliss an ample cushion from his 178 points in the next few races should a challenge be mounted by the chasing four-cylinder contenders.

Double Dutch Delight for Bayliss at Assen
28 April 2008
Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) powered to his second double of the year with two convincing wins at the Assen TT Circuit in the Netherlands in the fourth round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship front of 75,000 spectators. Bayliss powered to his fifth win at Assen in the opening race after a mistake by early leader Kagayama (Alstare Suzuki) on lap 12 left him with a gap at the chicane. The Australian then increased his lead over the following riders in the final laps to win by a margin of 2 seconds. Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) took the runner-up slot, in a sprint to the finish with Max Neukirchner (Suzuki Alstare). Kagayama took fourth from Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB), both riders holding off a late charge by Jakub Smrz (Ducati Guandalini).

Stoner Needs To Beat Rossi To Be World Champion
19 September 2007
If Casey Stoner finishes in front of Valentino Rossi in the A-Style Grand Prix of Japan on Sunday he will be crowned the 2007 MotoGP World Champion with three rounds remaining. The 21 year-old Australian leads the Italian by an impressive 76 points and if he finishes in front of him in the 24-lap race he will win the title that he has had firmly in his grasp since that opening round of the championship in Qatar way back in March. However, Rossi may be able to delay the inevitable for another week after a superb win in the bwin.com Grand Prix of Portugal on Sunday. His Fiat Yamaha and Michelin tyres for once stood up to the all-conquering combination of Stoner’s Marlboro Ducati and the Bridgestone tyres in a superb race in which the Repsol Honda of Dani Pedrosa also paid a large part.

Fifteen Extra Points Required
11 September 2007
Twenty-one year-old Australian Casey Stoner could clinch the 2007 MotoGP World Championship crown at the bwin.com Grand Prix of Portugal at Estoril on Sunday. With five rounds of the 18-round title chase remaining, the Marlboro Ducati rider needs to score 15 points more than seven times World Champion Valentino Rossi in the 28-lap race round the 2.599 Estoril circuit. It’s a tough but not impossible task for Stoner who arrives on the Atlantic coast of Portugal in superb form. He has not only won, but totally dominated the last three grands prix, on the GP 7 Ducati. He leads Rossi by 85 points in the championship after eight grand prix victories and just to add some icing to the cake; Stoner won his first 250cc grand prix at Estoril just two years ago.

Rossi Seeks Some Homeland Security
28 August 2007
Can anybody stop Casey Stoner winning the 2007 MotoGP World Championship? It’s very doubtful and they must start by winning the 13th round of the Championship, the Cinzano Grand Prix di San Marino e dello Riviera of Rimini at Misano on Sunday. The 21 year-old Australian arrives with a massive 60-point championship lead and seeking his eighth win of the season on the Marlboro Ducati. He’s won the last two grands prix with consummate ease and will have plenty of support from the partisan Italian Ducati fans. His nearest rival Valentino Rossi can guarantee the support with his home village around ten miles from the track, but the seven-times World Champion can guarantee little else.
