Dakar Rally - 9th Win In A Row For KTM As Despres Seals Victory In Buenos Aires

KTM-supported rider Cyril Despres sealed victory in the 2010 Dakar Rally after more than 9000 km across Argentina and Chile. He rode triumphantly into Buenos Aires to complete his third Dakar victory and the ninth consecutive victory for KTM, the Austrian-made sports motorcycles. With this ninth consecutive success KTM remains unbeaten in the most important Rally race since 2001.

Day Five Dakar: Stage Four win for KTM's Marc Coma

Marc Coma, the current Dakar title holder and KTM-supported rider rose to the challenge on Tuesday to take victory in the fourth stage of the Dakar 2010 as riders descended down the Andes into Chile heading for the notorious Atacama Desert.

Following the announcement at a press conference on June 4, 2009 of the French "ASO" - the organisers of the "South American Dakar" that from 2010, only motorcycles with a maximum displacement of 450 cc will be permitted to compete, KTM, after eight consecutive victories, has decided to immediately accept the consequences and announces its withdrawal from the "Dakar".

Pirelli’s new Scorpion Rally off-road tire proved to be the ideal weapon for the diversity of conditions for this epic challenge Pirelli’s debut in the Dakar as a supplier to the official KTM factory teams was nothing short of dominating, with the new SCORPION RALLY tyre capturing the 1st and 2nd positions on the podium with riders Marc Coma and Cyril Despres. This off-road rally tyre was developed together with KTM in preparation for this year’s Dakar. Out of a field of 235 riders, seven riders chose to have support from Pirelli and out of these seven, three riders finished in the top 7 positions overall. KTM Repsol rider Marc Coma (SPA) and Red Bull KTM rider Cyril Despres (FRA) were fiercely competitive in this 31st edition of the Dakar, considered to be the most difficult rally race in the world, which this year moved 10,000 km away to South America.

Fog Foils Stage 11 as 2009 Dakar Heads Back to Argentina

Just as the 2009 Dakar was about to leave Peru, cross the Andes and re-enter Argentina for the eleventh stage of the rally, organisers announced they were forced to cancel due to heavy fog forecast for the whole route.
The desert coastal areas of Chile and Peru are often subject to fog when cool air comes in from the Pacific and hits the Andes Mountains.

Welcome Rest Day in Chile for KTM's Dakar Stars

After seven days hard riding the four KTM factory riders are resting up in Valparaiso on the Chilean coast before tackling the remaining six days of racing. Riders still have plenty to occupy themselves during the day off and to prepare for the second half of the race. The first week of this South American Dakar was supposed to be a ‘gentle' warm up but has turned out to be as tough as any ‘African' Dakar that has gone before it. And it is certain that next week is going to be even tougher…

Lopez Enjoys Home Victory as Dakar Rally Reaches Chile

Francisco Lopez led in KTM factory riders Marc Coma and Cyril Despres to celebrate victory in Stage Seven of the 2009 Dakar before his home country fans. It was fitting that Lopez should win the special which he did 3.57 ahead of Marc Coma (Repsol KTM) the overal header at the halfway mark of the world's toughest rally.

The last competitors are still battling to make it to the bivouac in time. Arriving too late means you're out, the rest day cannot be used make a late arrival. All Team Honda Europe riders are in, except Vadim Pritulyak, who's still underway in the 400 km long liaison to Valparaiso. (Which is partially off-road)

Dakar Rally: Honda Update - Relaxing 6th Stage after a Tough Day

The impact of the fifth special is still resounding in the bivac. Many cars and trucks have spend long hours on their way to Mendoza. The stories of the competitors are a tale of heavy terrain, terrible rain and hailstones and disorientation. Only 16 of the trucks managed to reach the finish, and half of the cars went missing.

Dakar Rally: Interview Mick Extance - 'This is tougher than Africa'

Mick Extance is by far the most experienced rider in the Dakarsport/Team Honda Europe. Since 2002 he's been in the Dakar every year. Always in the top 50, his best result was the 26th place overall in 2006. Mick (46) has been riding motocross and enduro his whole life. He was European Enduro champion in 2002, and won a gold medal and two silver medals in the International Sixdays.

American Jonah Street Shines in Stage Five on KTM

Young American Jonah Street crowned an impressive couple of days with his first Dakar stage win 5'53 ahead of Frans Verhoeven and 7'34 in front of the Chilean Lopez.

Victory on the fourth stage went once again to Marc Coma (Repsol KTM) 1'17 ahead of Cyril Despres (Red Bull KTM) with the American Jonah Street (KTM) third (at 1'21). Overall Marc increases his lead to 42'57 ahead of new second place man Street with Fretigne third (at 43'42). Jordi Viladoms (Repsol KTM) is fourth (at 55'57) with Cyril moving up to 11th (at 1h37'07). After yesterday's crash Alain Duclos went better today to finish 16th on the special 26'44 behind the winner.

Coma & Viladoms Cross the Line Together - Dakar Stg. 3

The long stage from Puerto Madryn to Jacobacci smiled on the Repsol KTM team with Marc Coma and Jordi Viladoms crossing the final finishing line together ahead of their rivals. Less fortunate was their KTM team mate Cyril Despres (Red Bull KTM) who again suffered tyre problems and had to wait for his support rider Alain Duclos to ‘lend' him his rear wheel.

Over the second short stage victory went to Frans Verhoeven (KTM) 0'41 ahead of Cyril Despres (Red Bull KTM) with David Fretigne third (at 1'04). Despite running into problems with his oil cooler, Marc Coma (Repsol KTM) maintains his overall lead 13'47 ahead of Verhoeven with Fretigne third (at 16'51).

The first special of the 2009 Dakar should have been an uneventful warm-up but of the four KTM factory riders only Marc Coma made it through untroubled during the 371 kms from Buenos Aires to Santa Rosa to take a commanding lead.

The competitors woke up yesterday morning with a clear sky and a very comfortable temperature. After the start from the Heroes'Square a liaison of 58 kilometer was scheduled. Cyril Despres was the first bike to ride of the podium.
