UK Motorcycle Industry Backs European Safety Campaign

The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) is giving its full backing to a new Europe-wide road safety campaign developed by the Association des Constructeurs Européens de Motocycles (ACEM). The campaign will last 13 months and uses a cartoon format to highlight everyday risks to riders of powered two wheelers (PTWs).

Motorcycle Market Holds Up Well Despite Economic Gloom

Motorcycle sales in September dropped by 9.7 per cent – less than half the 21.2 per cent monthly decline recorded yesterday by the UK car industry. Total registrations of powered two wheelers (PTWs) last month were 16,431 against 18,204 a year ago, according to figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI).

The faltering UK economy caught up with the motorcycle market last month, with only the fourth monthly dip in sales so far this year. Following a 22 per cent increase in the market in July, total registrations for powered two wheelers (PTWs) in August were 12.3 per cent down on last year at 10,104 units, according to figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI).

Motorcycle Sales Jump 22% as People Switch to Two Wheels

Sales of powered two wheelers (PTW) including motorcycles, mopeds and scooters, soared by 22 per cent last month according to figures released today by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI). PTW registrations in July were 14,306 – an increase of 2,578 over the same month last year. Total PTW registrations for the first seven months of the year are up 1 per cent at 87,551. This is in stark contrast to the UK car market which fell almost 13 per cent last month and is nearly 3 per cent down to the end of July.

Industry and Economy - Since about 2001 expenditure on motorcycling has been around £0.75 per household per week (£0.15 on purchases and loans, £0.60 on accessories, spares, etc.) which suggests a total for the UK at more than £1 billion. The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) estimates that the total UK motorcycle industry turns over in the region of £3 billion per year and directly employs approximately 15,000 people.

‘Now’s The Time’ To Get On Two Wheels

National Motorcycle Week is the annual campaign organised by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI) to promote the benefits of motorcycling. The event runs from 13th – 19th July and the key date is Ride to Work Day on the 16th. This year the theme is ‘Now’s The Time’. This is because the industry aims to encourage more new people into motorcycling before new legislation is introduced later in 2008.

Bikers Say ‘Kick Out The Jams’ In National Motorcycle Week

Thousands of motorcycle and scooter owners across the country will be heading to work on two wheels as part of a National Motorcycle Week organised by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI). Ride to Work Day, part of National Motorcycle Week, has been highlighting the number of motorcyclists in the UK and the social, environmental and economic benefits of two-wheeled powered vehicles since it was first created by the MCI in 1999. The squad of riders will be descending on London to celebrate all things two wheels. The squad is supported by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), Bikesafe, The RAC and manufacturers including Piaggio, Honda, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki , BMW, Suzuki and Barrus.

New Test Centre Won't Be Ready In Time

The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) has today called for the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to agree to introduce transitional arrangements for motorcycle licence tests, as the date for the introduction of a European regulation looms. On September 29th the motorcycle test is changing to introduce new manoeuvres required under a European Directive. The DSA has chosen to implement the directive by concentrating motorcycle tests at about 60 planned multi-purpose test centres (MPTC) around the UK. Currently there are around 260 motorcycle test centres and the DSA plan slashes this number by 80%.

Survey Says More of Us are Turning to 2 Wheels

Registrations of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds last month were 10.2 per cent up on the same month last year, according to figures issued by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA). Motorbike registrations recorded at 13,747 were 1,269 up on April, 2007. This takes the total market this year to 44,441 – up 1.3 per cent on the same period last year. Increases were seen across almost all engine sizes and bike categories with mopeds up 49.7 per cent and scooters up 42.3 per cent.

MCIA Says Time for Motorcycling to Be Taken Seriously

Leaders of the UK motorcycle industry are calling for government, legislators, local authorities and transport planners to start treating motorcycling as a serious and relevant alternative to the use of cars and public transport. The demand comes from David Taylor, chief executive of the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA), just days after news of an 8.6 per cent increase in motorcycle, scooter and moped registrations last year – the biggest annual jump in registrations for seven years.

A pioneering motorcycle expedition to Equatorial West Africa has received a major boost thanks to support from Touratech, the specialist overland equipment manufacturer. Touratech have provided tough aluminium panniers from their ‘Zega’ range, sump guards, crash bars, auxiliary lights and other essential items that mean the bike, a BMW R1200GS, will be well prepared for the variable road conditions that will be faced on the 4,000 mile journey.
