Smith's Rain Shower Wrecker
A short sharp shower of rain wrecked Bradley Smith’s chance of his first ever grand prix victory in the 125 cc race at the Dutch TT in Assen this afternoon. Seventeen year old Smith was a comfortable leader of the scheduled 22 lap ninth round of the World Championship when it started to rain on various sections of the legendary 2.830 mile circuit in North Holland. As the conditions worsened Smith, who like all other riders was using slick tyres on his Polaris World Aprilia, crashed on lap ten. The race was immediately stopped with the red flag and the race was re-run over just five laps. With grid positions determined for the new race by the finishing position of riders on the previous lap before the red flag was shown, Smith was able to start and in pole position.

Edwards Third, Toseland Back in Top Ten
Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards was involved in more late drama at Assen today as a stunning surge from the back of the field was rewarded with third place. For the second time in three years, Edwards was involved in dramatic incident at the final chicane with Nicky Hayden as he snatched third from his fellow American just metres from the finish line. Fourth at the start of the last lap, Edwards produced a brilliant display of overtaking to come from dead last on the opening lap as he narrowly avoiding an early tangle between Valentino Rossi and Randy de Puniet. Producing lap times close the formidable pace set by eventual winner Casey Stoner, Edwards fought his way back into seventh when he passed Jorge Lorenzo on lap 10. He then quickly closed on an exciting battle for fourth that included Chris Vermeulen, Andrea Dovizioso and Shinya Nakano.

Edwards on Second Row, Toseland 13th in Assen
27 June 2008
A windy but dry qualifying session in Assen today ended with Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards claiming his ninth successive top six grid position in 2008. On his first set of Michelin qualifying tyres, the American posted a best time of 1.36.278 to move to the top of the timesheets as he went in search a fifth front row start in nine races. Edwards though, who has won three World Superbike races at the historic Assen circuit, was thwarted in his attempts to improve his lap time by minor front tyre issues with his last two sets of qualifying tyres. He eventually had to settle for sixth place, but is confident he can mount a podium challenge in tomorrow’s 26-lap race, despite a strong chance of rain. Inclement weather conditions this morning gave Edwards the chance to improve his rain setting after encountering some problems a week ago at the British GP.

Stoner Storms Into Assen
26 June 2008
Just four days after his Donington Park triumph Casey Stoner was back in action on the Marlboro Ducati to set the fastest lap ever recorded by a motorcycle round the 2.830 mile Assen circuit in the North of Holland this afternoon. The 22 year old World Champion was in stunning form both in the morning and afternoon practice sessions held in bright sunshine, to lead Championship leader Valentino Rossi by over seven tenths of one second. The Australian revealed after his British Grand Prix win on Sunday that the Ducati team had developed some improved electronics which he hoped would continue to be as successful in Assen and that certainly proved the case. Third fastest was American Colin Edwards riding the Tech 3 Yamaha in front of 2006 Assen winner Nicky Hayden on the pneumatic valve Repsol Honda.

Pedrosa the Main Michelin Man at Catalunya
10 June 2008
Michelin man Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V-Michelin) left the rest of the pack racing for second place at Catalunya this afternoon, the local hero smashing lap and race records during his awesome start-to-finish victory. Pedrosa was Michelin’s top performer in a great day for the French tyre brand, four of the first six finishers using Michelin tyres. Local hero Pedrosa – who grew up in Sabadell, less than 20km from the track – chose hard-compound front and rear Michelins for this aggressive track and yet was able to set a stunning pace from the very beginning that quickly left his pursuers behind. At one point he had built an eight-second advantage, finally crossing the line 2.8 seconds ahead after easing his pace during the final laps. Nonetheless Pedrosa broke the Catalunya race record by more than 14 seconds. His performance was particularly impressive because the track has not been in great shape this weekend with riders complaining of a lack of grip. Lap records were not broken in the 125 and 250 GPs.

Toseland Hammers Another Six in Barcelona
10 June 2008
Yorkshireman James Toseland fought a ferocious battle to score his fourth sixth position of the season in the Cinzano Grand Prix of Catalunya in Barcelona this afternoon. It was a tough race on his debut at the 2.937 miles Circuit De Catalunya. An early tangle with Valentino Rossi pushed the Tech 3 Yamaha rider wide but he fought back and pipped Australian Chris Vermeulen to sixth place on the line. “I had a difficult few opening laps while I settled into a rhythm with the new settings on the bike,” said Toseland, who moved into seventh place in the Championship before his only one appearance in front of the British fans at the bwin.com British Grand Prix at Donington Park in two weeks time. “Valentino passed me and then I got pushed back a bit further before I managed to pull things back. I just got my head down and focussed on gaining some places. It’s hard work at these tracks that I don’t know so I’m really pleased to have qualified and finished the race in sixth position. My aim coming into the race was to finish sixth and improve my championship position and I’ve done both. I’m looking forward to getting to Donington now to see what I can do at a track that I’m familiar with.”
