Poorly lubricated chains will overheat, causing them to stretch and increasing friction on the sprockets, which will wear down more quickly, all of which affects the chain’s ability to drive the rear wheel. Worse still, the O-rings in modern chains are liable to perish if insufficiently protected by chain lube.
